I am interested in Hiram Mitchell who is listed on the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census of Sumner County TN. I have suspected for over a year that he could be my ancestor Hiram Mitchell who is listed on the 1850 census in Bibb County AL. My Hiram was born in TN (or possibly NC where his parents were born), around 1800. I am trying to collect all information I can on Hiram Mitchell of Sumner Co. in hopes that I can either rule him out or confirm that he is my Hiram. I am also interested in knowing the relationships between all of these people, the Mitchells, and those connected to them. If you have any information on these people, I would be very happy and grateful to receive it. I do have some specific questions you may be able to help with, especially: Have any of your Mitchells been tested in a DNA project? We are part of the Mitchell DNA Project which is tested through Family Tree DNA. It has so far, allowed us to rule out a couple of possibilities, but no tight connections as of yet. Who were the parents of Hiram Mitchell, and is there any record or knowledge of him on your end after the 1840 census? I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks a lot! Some information I have on James Bell, to see if I can find out more. 1808 June 9-James Bell and Betsy Easbery ( Elizabeth Easley )were married in Sumner County TN. Bondsmen were Frederick Brown, John Mitchel, Ovian Faulk, James Cage, Josephus H Conn, Abrim Trigg. To Marita re: Will Question. The following is Rowland's will. It would be helpful if you could quote the source of your information, as several of the names vary slightly. County Court Clerk's Office Will Book - Vol. II May 1823- June 1842 (Page 262) In the name of God Amen. Know all men by the presents that I Rowland T. Hodges of the County of Sumner and the State of Tennessee being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind and memory, have thought proper to make and publish my last Will and Testament and by these presents do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows. First, I wish all my just debts and funeral expenses paid. Secondly, I wish my son Lawson M. Hodges to him and my son Ezekiel N. Hodges, an other filly at valuation and my daughters Louisa, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Chloe each a bed if there are so many, if not as they stand mentioned as far as they go at valuation, also my daughter Louisa a saddle. I wish my wife Nancy to have the bed she had before I married her. I wish my land and all the rest of my estate sold, the chattle property on a credit of one year, and the land on a one and two years credits and the amount equally divided between John C., Lawson M., Ezekiel N., Louisa, Elizabeth, Sarah, Chloe, and Isham Hodges, and Asa M. Hodges, after taking out the aforesaid valuation of the property hereby given to them the aforesaid Lawson, Ezekiel, Elizabeth, Louisa, Sarah and Chloe. I hereby revoke all other wills, confirming this my last Will and Testament. October 28, 1839. Rowland T. Hodges (Seal) Witness M. Hodges William W. Ausbrooks Codicil to the within, I appoint Meredith Hodges my Executor this my last Will and Testament this 28 of October 1839. Rowland T. Hodges (Seal) William W. Ausbrooks Ezekiel C. Elaine, You have the right bunch. The Blacks, Troutts, Charltons, Rippys, and others went to Marion & Jefferson County in late 1929 & early 1830. As you stated Elizabeth married Isaac Charlton, Samuel Troutt married Nancy Black [23 Oct 1828, Sumner Co.], John Troutt married (2nd) Lucy Black [I believe the widow of Jacob Black] [9 Feb 1840 Jefferson Co], Jacob Reynolds [John Troutt's nephew] married Polly Black [3 Feb 1821 Sumner Co]. I am not a Black or Charlton descendant, but I am a Rippy & Troutt. Most of the Rippys went to Odin, (Marion Co.) Illinois and the Troutts and Blacks went to Woodlawn in Jefferson County. Before John Troutt went to Illinois he sold 26 acres to Abram Charlton on 18 Mar 1829. Michael Black who died about 1826-1830 in Sumner County is the father of the Blacks mentioned above. Not knowing anything about Elizabeth she may be the daughter of John Black, as John had two daughters under 10 years on the 1820 Sumner Co. census. Several have mention the name of John Michael Black, but I believe they are two different people, John & Michael. Eli Wilson Black (1846 - 1929) wrote some of his memoirs with the help of one of his granddaughter in 1928. The first paragraph he states that John Black was his grandfather. George & Eliza (Anderson) Black was E. Ws parents. Anyway you have the right Elizabeth & Isaac Charlton from Sumner County. Feel free to contact me. There is neat website that describes some of the medical terms that we find listed as cause of death. It is unique in that it includes the source for the definition of each archaic term displayed. You can also email any term that does not appear in the index and he will research it for you in his extensive collection of antique medical books and he will then add it to the list. The address is http://www.antiquusmorbus.com/index.htm

I believe I sent an email regarding Elizabeth Black and Isaac Charlton some time ago but I thought I would ask again, as perhaps, someone has joined since that would have some information. My GGG grandparents were Isaac and Elizabeth Charlton who settled in Salem Ill in about 1830. According to the census records they had children born in Tenn. I researched marriages in Tenn and found an Isaac Charlton married to Elizabeth Black in 1822. I assumed this was the same Isaac and Elizabeth. My problem is that the birth year for Elizabeth does not agree with what is on the Sumner web site and what is reflected in the census records. The difference is 8 years so that is a lot. I would really appreciate any information regarding Isaac and Elizabeth. Thanks, Elaine
List, First of all Allen Co., Ky was formed out of Warren Co., Ky and those counties are across the state line that was in dispute between Ky and Tn for several years and very close to Sumner Co., Tn. . I believe they refer to it as Walker's Line. My Aaron Perry according to census records was born in Ky 1816-1819. He married Rebecca Ann Cushenberry and died in Allen Co., Ky in 1885. The 1880 Allen Co. Ky census states his father was born in NC and his mother in VA. The Cushenberry surnane in earlier generations has not yet been proven to the Quisenbery names below but they all came from VA to KY and are believed to be kin. I have the following Perry data that has associations in Wake Co., NC and Sumner Co., Tn.: (1) In Wake Co., NC Mar 1797 A deed from Aaron Perry to James Fort was proved of Benton Powell a witness...... there was a Benton Powell connected to Francis Perry in Wake Co., NC (2) June 1797 Sarah Perry wife of Francis Perry Rich Land Creek 218 acres Nathaniel Jones, Joel King, John Hinton, Jr., Henry Seawell. (3) In Sumner Co., TN under Wilson Co., Tn Deed Book A it states " Aaron Perry of Sumner County to William Thomas of Sumner County a tract of land on the West Fork of Barton's Creek. 12 December 1799.. pp 85-88. Under the Census of the Cumberland Settlements it names Leon Perry 1789 on a jury ; Sion Perry witnessed deed of William Edwards, Nov. 1789 Bondsman for Reubin Martin and Jeremy Kuynendal. This is some of what I have. Maybe someone can add something to this. I do feel that my Aaron Perry (2nd great grandfather) that married Rebecca Cushenberry is descended from these Perry's. The people who lived in Sumner Co., Tn and in Warren and Allen Co., Ky crossed the Ky / Tn state line all of the time. If anyone can add to this please get in touch with me. Marianne Dillow Illinois

I am seeking information about Amos (Ame) Cook born in Tennessee in 1818; per an 1880 census. who married Mary Ann Moore, born in Virginia, per an 1880 census. They are the parents of Sally "Sullie" Ann Cook who was born in Allen County, Kentucky, November 15, 1847. Sally died in Allen County July 11, 1926 and is buried at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Amos, Kentucky. Sally Ann married William "Bill" Henry Harrison Chandler on March 17, 1868 in Allen County, KY. Any information on Amos and Mary Ann would be so greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance. Mary Kathern
I am researching the Joel BROWN family and am interested in a daughter named Peggy who may be the Margarette BROWN who married William PAYNE abt 1821. This is what I know. Joel BROWN b. between 1730-1740 (based on 1830 census) in NC; d. abt 1835; wife has been listed as Mary SEAY b. 1750-1760 in NC; d between 1830-1840 They started out in NC. They married about 1776 and lived in Bertie NC. All children appear to be born in NC and are spread between the years 1777 and 1801. There were a total of 5 sons 3 of whom may have stayed in NC. They may have moved westward to Randolph co, NC, before arriving in TN after 1801. Joel BROWN wrote a will (Will Book 1788-1842 Sumner Co., TN) dated 4 March 1834 and proved 1835-6. The synopsis lists eldest son John Brown. Second son Stephen Brown. Daughter Polly Acrey. Son John Brown. Daughter Peggy Payne. Daughter Raney Laseter. Appoints Jesse Laseter and John Brown executors. The daughter Polly (Mary) was born between 1774-1790 and it has been listed as b. 1777. She may be the wife of John ACREE also of Bertie NC. They moved to TN and lived in Stewart Co. "Raney" is Lourana b. 1796 and she married Jesse LASSITER in 1826. She lived until 10 July 1870 according to one website, although she was listed on the census just 2 days before that in Stewart Co. I cannot nail down which John BROWN may have been the son. Nor can I find a Stephen BROWN living in TN at the time of Joel's death. I am trying to place Margarette BROWN in this family, possibly as the daughter "Peggy" who was born between 1794 and 1804. My Margarette BROWN was born about 1801 in NC and she married William PAYNE abt 1821 in Davidson Co, TN. According to the Christian Advocate she died in 1853 at the age of 52. She named her PAYNE children Robert, Greenwood, William, Mary Malvina, Martha Margaret, and Priscilla and one female died as a child. They lived in Davidson County in 1830 and 1840 census and are in Sumner County (with half the farm in Robertson Co ) in the 1850 census. I welcome your checking your database for any of these names and appreciate any help you listers can give me. Thanks a bunch.
