It's Paris, Texas, not Paris, TN. I know quite a bit about him, I just wanted to know why the local American Legion there named the post after him. Nobody knows. It appears it was just a handy thing to do at that point in time. The last census I have for Neely and Harriet is the 1880 one, in which they were in Sumner. I know as long as these people lived in that area that there are bound to be descendants. I just haven't found the right ones, yet! That might help. Cottontown is about 15 miles from Portland down close to Beech community. There is a big cemetery there. One person was seven years old when George Washington was born. On the tombstone, it says, Sumner County, N.C. which is correct at that time. My wife knows there are so many Brown's in Sumner County, TN, that you have to dig thru the Archive records. What is the last date you have on the census. Billy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His mother was Methodist, and a couple of his brothers were Church of Christ. I contacted the Methodist church that my grandmother attended, but all its records have been lost through the years when people moved away, etc. There is an American Legion post in Paris, Texas, named for one of my Brown great-uncles who died in World War I, but it, too, has lost its records and no one there now remembers anything about my uncle. I Googled Sumner County, as you suggested, and came up with a lot of good information. Another person on this thread was nice enough to point me to some other resources, so I've been able to fill in some blanks for the first time in years on that line. I will be interested in knowing if your brother-in-law remembers anything about this family. Thanks, Jayne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This tells me a lot. Do you know if the cemetery has been surveyed and the names/dates recorded? This information leads me to believe that this branch of the family might have had ties to the Church of Christ, as later generations did. Maybe that will lead to more information. Or, perhaps, it is a coincidence that the cemetery is across from the church. That's what keeps genealogy interesting! He was born 10/11/1859 and died 4/25/1923. The death records of Wilkinson and Wiseman in Portland Tn. list his father as Neely Brown born Tn. and his mother as Harriet Parham Brown born Tn. He and his wife, Amanda Hagan Brown are buried in Maple Hill cemetery in Portland, Tn. Their daughter was Mary Lee Brown Link married to Birch Taylor Link, whose daughter was Ivy Louise Link Craigge Kilgore. She was my husband's mother, who died in January 2007, and all were buried in Maple Hill. I'm new to all of this information. We realized that after Mrs. Ivy's dead that we needed to find information for our children. There is a diary of a lady whose last name is Link(go to the Sumner County Genealogy page and look under Link family). She mentions the Neely Brown's marriage. I really think that his parents came from Lebanon, Tn. I hope you find where they are buried. Maybe some of ! this will help you.
