Elizabeth TUCKER was the 2nd wife of Andy A "Nat" BLACK, son of George G BLACK and Eliza ANDERSON, who was the orphan d/o Captain Andy ANDERSON and married G G at 15 yrs. She bore him 11 chidren, five daughters and six sons. Francis BLACK b. 1829 m. Drury PERRY Levi BLACK b. 1830 d. 1868 m. Sina GRAVES (1) and (2) Elizabeth TUCKER Dick BLACK m. Polly Ann GRAVES (2) Mary WILCOX and (3) Bina _____? All the children were born in the family home west of Trammel Creek and north of Turner Station on old Hwy 31E going towards Franklin, KY from Westmoreland TN. Perhaps you can look Elizabeth up on the Sumner Co records and find her family. Mary BLACK, age 91 mother in law of Liza lived through 3 generations seeing her family broken by death. She moved into the home of her step son, J Anderson RIPPY and died in 1876 and was buried in the family plot "northwest of Sugar Grove" after a long life of little less than one hundred years. Nat also married the fall of 1869 to Sina GRAVES and moved into his log house about a quarter of a mile east of the old homestead on Trammel Creek. There is recorded at Scottsville, KY a marriage license issued to Geore W BLACK and Martha DAVIS on march 24, 1863. They were married in the New Hope Church, northwest of Westmoreland, TN where my Aunt Rosie May ROALIN and Uncle Everette HUNTSMAN and son Billy Gene HUNTSMAN are buried. Their marriage vows were performed by Reverend J. G. DURHAM. Martha DAVIS was a sister of Sydney and took place a couple of years after G W returned from fighting in the Civil War. Levi, George W BLACK's older brother moved to Odin, Marion Co, IL which was a rapidly developing territory. He wrote of railroad construction and a plan by Napoleon MORRISON to sink a coal mine shaft. Many members of the family organized a wagon train with eight to ten wagons and made the trip to Odin, IL, after G W died at the age of 71 in 1867. The estate of Eliza BLACK was divided among the children according to records found in Nashville TN for she left know will. George and martha DAVIS BLACK of Odin received 43 1/2 acres the homestead and land west of it. Armanda and patton TROUT received 28 acres to the east, Mary and Sidney DAVIS received 25 1/2 acres east of Armanda's plot; Elizabeth and William TURNER received 30 1/2 acres south of these plots; Francis and Drury PERRY received 32 1/2 acres south of George's plot and the homestead and the remainer of the estate went to unidentified persons, presumably for legal fees, etc. Andy "Nat" and Dick had already received land notheast of the estate and built their homes. At the time of the court's decree, the children lived at various and sundry places. Francis and D Perry lived near Scottsville, KY. Armanda lived in Morehouse, MO. Elizabeth remained at home to run the general store and post office at Turner's Station. Mary and Sidney moved to Odin along with G W and Martha. The O & M RR was built through Odink IL going west to St. Louis in 1857 and the IC RR was built in 1865 making Odin the crossroads of a trhriving town and coal was discovered in 1868. The first Methodist Chruch was started with no building in 1882 and held in homes of members. In 1886 a lot was bought on the west side of Laurell Street and the deed was transferred from W E and Lois SMITH to Joseph FULL, A. D. (Alf) TROUT, R. N. JACKSON and George W. Hi, Does anyone have information on this person? Martha Ann (or Mary J.) Moore Parents - unknown born 12 Oct 1825?. Possibly in KY. She married 3 Jan 1844 in Sumner Co. TN to Rev. John C. Payne It appears she died about 1891. In the Shelby Co. TN probate records for J. C. Paine it lists "Mrs. Mary J. Moore deceased." I am not sure if this is the above Martha Ann who married John since the last name is Moore instead of Payne. Anyone have a Martha Ann Moore in their records? Thanks! Diane Payne

Posted on: Sumner Co. Tn Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Sumner/11944 Surname: Tucker, Morris ------------------------- My Grandfather Francis Marion Tucker, later known as Frank M. Tucker was born 6/2/1865 in or nearby Gallatin, Sumner Co., TN. I recently obtained a copy of his death certificate which confirmed birth in TN but not where. Shown also was his mother Mary Morris, born in TN, where not shown, and his father Grandoill Tucker, born in VA but where not shown. I question the spelling of his first name as I have never heard it before. The Grand is quite clear, the o & i are fairly clear, and the two l's appear to be good. This is all handwritten. I would tend to think that it might be Grandvill, but maybe it is Grandoill. Does anyone around the Gallatin area have any ties to this? I would think that would make both of them born about 1845 or before. Would appreciate any help I can get and if we should be related, will gladly exchange what I have. Francis Marion arrived in Warren Co, KY. around 1885 and married my Grandmother Sarah M. Grable in 1886.
I recently found this website maybe it will help someone out there. Pam Vick http://www.kjgenlinks.com/

NORBERG, Major Infantry, North Providence, RI; 02 Jun 1933-7 Jun 1966 Lon A. SPURLOCK, LtCol Infantry, Midkiff, WV; 23 Apr 1936-28 Mar 1969 These are my friends that I would like all of you to remember this Memorial Day 2001 they have a lot in common they were all career Army officers, all were in the Infantry and they all died in the Republic of Vietnam and their names now appear on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. They were all married and had young children. I was with two of them when they were hit and in George Dailey's case about thirty feet away. George Commanded B Company 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division while I Commanded C Company of the same unit. Ed Hornstein and Bill Norberg graduated from college together and I met them on my first day in the Army as we went to the Basic Infantry Officer's Course (BIOC-5) Starting in Nov 1956 - Fort Benning, GA. We then went to Airborne and Ranger schools and then were on the same plane going to Korea where we were assigned to the 7th Infantry Division - but not the same unit. While in Korea I served in the 17th Infantry Regiment with Jim Conway - we were both in the same Rifle Company, Jim was the Weapons platoon Leader while I had one of the three Rifle Platoons. Besides being a fellow Tennessean Jim was one of the senior 2nd Lt's in the Regiment and he was a great help to me as 2nd Lt's (Infantry) have a lot to learn and a very short time to learn it.... also in the Regiment were Jack McClure and John Arnn we were all 2nd Lt's together. (Major James B. Conway was awarded the Distinguised Service Cross {Posthumously} Our Nations 2nd Highest Combat award for Valor) Then in 1962 when we were Captains Jack McClure, Lon Spurlock and George Hussy and I all commanded Mechanized Rifle Companies in the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry, of the Third Armored Division. As such we worked with and competed against each other every day for the 12 to 14 months we were Company Comanders. We also knew each others families as Germany unlike Korea was an accompanied tour. LtCol George Eyster was the Battalion Commander of the 2/28th Infantry, the son of a General Officer and on his way to higher rank, one of the finest officers I have ever served with. LtCol Lippman was the Brigade Executive Officer and as such worked with all of the Company and Battalion Commanders on a pretty much daily basis, he was the finest EXO I have ever worked with as he knew everyone in the Brigade and made you proud to be his unit. I miss each of them and am proud to have known them and call them my friend and to have had the privilige of serving with them. I will never forget them and the sacrifice they made for all of us................. Uncle John in Falco
Hi, Does anyone know which Dickerson Austin this was: "Robert F. Payne, 1875 -- Guardianship Source: Sumner County Archives County Court Minutes, page 557 December Term 1875 Ordered by the court that Robt F. Payne be _ granted Guardianship of Dickerson Austin a person of unsound mind." Was this Dickerson D. Austin, son of Thomas and Fanny Dickerson Austin? If so, he was probably suffering from senility. My records show that court testimony stated his death date as 1875/76 Curious, Sherry http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~providence/ourpage.html

I can say that your Thomas Ashlock WAS NOT a son of Mary Ann (Hunter) Ashlock, who was Isaac M. Ashlock's FIRST wife (not his second wife). Mary Ann died after 1857 when her youngest child, Phebe, was born, but before the 1860 census was taken. I am not, however sure if your Thomas Ashlock was the same as Thomas Alonzo Ashlock, who was a child of Rev. Isaac Melton Ashlock by his second wife, Margaret. That looks possible, but I don't have all Ashlock census data in Sumner County, so I cannot say with certainty. I do have the following census information that may be helpful: 1870 U.S. Census, Sumner County, Tennessee [sorry, I didn't make exact references when I transcribed this information over 20 years ago] Ashlock, Isaac 45 b. I have noted in the margin of my cemetery records that Margaret Ashlock was a LEE before her marriage to Isaac Ashlock. I hope this helps. Erick Montgomery

Please help fill in the gaps! My gggg grandfather Abijah RICE was born about 1797 in Cocke Co., TN, according to his War of 1812 service record. He was in Middle TN by 1813, and enlisted in KY in April that year in the 24th US Reg. Inf. (made up of men from TN and headquartered in Nashville) under Capt. J. A. Rogers. The NARA cannot find the muster rolls for the 24th US Reg. Inf.; I was hoping I might that Abijah had enlisted along with a family member on the same date. He later was in the First US Rifles under Capt. Edw. Wadsworth. I believe that Abijah had a brother named Jehu who was enumerated in Sumner Co. in 1820; he later went to Southern IL (Hamilton and Franklin Cos.) Abijah and Jehu were 1/2 Cherokee, and Jehu's daughter Rhoda is lsited on the Cherokee Emigration Rolls in 1832 (according to a descendant.) The names Abijah and Jehu are both Biblical, names of kings of Israel. In June of 1817, he married Jaley Ann BROWN in Wilson Co., TN. By 1819, according to circuit court records, they had gone on to MO Territory, settling in the areas of New Madrid and Cape Girardeau Cos. They always settled in known Indian camps, first one near present day Bloomfield, MO (a Shawnee/Delaware/Cherokee camp under Chief Wahepalathy) and then in Chilletecaux, named for the Delaware Chiefwho headed the village, near present day Kennett, MO. In 1837, 300 hundred Indians and only 2 white families were living in this village. My ancestors considered themselves Indian. Abijah and Jaley had children: William, b. @ 1816; James Pascal (my ggg grandfather), b. @ 1818; Margaret J.; Elizabeth Bellona; and Susan or Susannah M. (either Mary or Martha). Margaret J. married Henry L. JONES; Elizabeth B. married Sam HECTOR; Susan married Benjamin S. ENLOW. Abijah and Jaley wnet their separate ways about 1837, when she had a child by a full blooded Indian named John EAST. Abijah and his oldest son William are enumerated in Cedar Co., MO, in 1850, Newton Co., MO, in 1860, and William and his family only (presumably Abijah died between 1860 and 1870, in either Newton Co., MO, or Neosho, KS) in 1870 in Wilson Co., KS. There is some evidence that Abijah and William moved away from Jaley and the other children after 1832, and went to Western ARK or NE Indian Territory. A marriage for an Abiher REECE [sic] has been found in the 1830's in Crawford Co., ARK. Quite possibly, Abijah continued to move west with the Cherokee Old Settlers. I cannot find him in 1840 on any census. His son Pascal, my ggg grandfather, is living in McCracken Co., KY, in 1840 (now Ballard Co., KY). In 1850, he and wife Sarah (according to family history, known as WENOKIE) and their children are in Jefferson Co., IL. By 1860, they are back in Mississippi Co., ARK. 1870 on they are in the area of Hornersville, Dunklin Co., MO. Jaley was the daughter of Leonard BROWN (possibly James Leonard BROWN) and an Indian woman named WATHACAPEE. No idea what tribe; possibly Saponi/Tutelo as they were from VA. Guion Miller applications say Cherokee, but I have my suspicions. Jaley's brother Stephen (who served as bondsman for her marriage) is in Lawrence Co., TN in 1820 (two houses from a James BROWN old enough to be his father and Stephen's father-in-law Elias CRANFORD); Lauderdale Co, AL in 1830 (next to father in law Elias CRANFORD and undoubtedly a brother named Leonard BROWN); Wayne Co., TN, in 1840; Tishomingo Co., MS in 1845; Searcy and Izard Cos., ARK, 1850 on. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Doug Powers
Reply to Steve Purdue; My gg-grandparents Ben H & Sallie Luerzine Matilda (GRIFFIN) ROBERTS were married in Sumner county and my g-grandmother was one of the children born in TN before the family migrated to AR by way of IL and KY. Their youngest child was born in Fayetteville, Washington County, AR according to family sources. Ben's brother George ROBERTS (b 28 Sep 1829) married Catherine LINK also in the Sumner county area. George and Catherine were living in the Washington County AR in the 1880's near their daughter Mary Jane and her husband James R. POND. George died in Paris, TX 14 Jul 1883. He was apparently there on business. “Obituaries of Washington County Arkansas, Volume One. 1841 - 1892” Compiled by Barbara P Easley contains an edited transcription of the article which appeared in the Fayetteville Democrat August 2, 1883. Personal information extracted from the resolution of death drafted by the committee of his Lodge brothers [Farmington Lodge, No. 227, A.R.&A.M.], indicate Geo. D Roberts of Tennessee had come to Washington County, AR with his family about 10 years prior to his death. The Roberts Family settled near Mount Comfort. George was twice elected as Worshipful Master and was holding that office at the time of his death. Leroy POND, the grandson of Mary Jane ROBERTS and James POND is one of Washington County, AR's W.W.II heroes. I understand one street and the Veterans Memorial Building were named in his honor. The father of George and Ben H ROBERTS was Ben H ROBERTS Jr who according to Bible records married Mary M HILL in VA 30 Jul 1828. The Bible also names Ben and George's siblings: Mary Ann ROBERTS (b. 18 Mar 1831) married 14 Aug 1851 to Wm. LEGG; Andrew Jackson ROBERTS (b. 4 Mar 1836 d. 8 Oct 1852); and Eliz J. Roberts b. 27 Feb 1847. Family data indicates Ben ROBERTS the younger was born 16 Apr 1842 in VA and died 3 May 1900. Ben is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave n Blevins Cemetery, Falls County, TX. However, a family story says he died by his own hand in southeastern OK. His granddaughter told me his sons insisted the body be returned to TX for burial. I would like to hear from anyone with additional information on this ROBERTS line.
