    3. Posted on: Sumner Co. Tn Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Sumner/12002 Surname: Orr, Cotton ------------------------- This is what I have on the Orr Family: John Orr SR married Frances Unknown ( trying to find her maiden name! Place of marriage Unknown! Some or all of their children were born in VA or NC. John Orr SR died in 1798 and Frances died in 1813 in Sumner County. Place of their burial is Unknown. John Orr SR and wife Frances first appeared in Sumner County about 1794. John Orr SR had a Kentucky Land Grant of 200 acres and owned 60 acres in Sumner County. The Children: 1- Jane was already married to William Aldersoon, before their arrival in Sumner County, other researchers say they were married in SC. Died 1838. 2- John JR married Tellitha Cotton, they moved to IL about 1820 first to White County then on to Brown County. He died about 1840 3- James who eventually became a Doctor married Elizabeth DeLoach and they moved to Woodville, Wilkerson County, MS. James died July 1815. 4- David and Jenny McElwrath were married and they migrated to Bedford County, TN near the town of Unionville. They are buried in Pleasant Vally Cemetery along with a bunch of their descendants. David died about 1854. 5- Elizabeth married William Snoddy they divorced and I believe she married Armstead Alderson. 6- Margaret (Peggy) married William Ogles, after his death I believe she married Michael Cline then she married James W Alexander, both Margaret and James died at Mt Sterling, Brown County, IL, and are buried next to Green Berry Orr. She died around 1860 7. William married Annie Smith, no other information concerning him. 8- Green Berry married three time first ti Aramintha Harris then he was married to Elizabeth Burk and finally there was his marriage to Mary Brown who migrated to Brown County, IL. Died 1849. If anyone is researching this family I will gladly share information.......................... Winona Creek WEC1040@aol.com

    2. J. Ray Young
    3. Can someone tell me more about the Sumner Co malitia. ie Do muster rolls exist and other lists for commissions for sligtly later dates etc. I see a Capt John Young on the list as receiving a commission in 1793. My Samuel Young spent some time in Sumner Co. He had a daughter born there in 1798 and a son in 1802. When he came to IL in 1812 he was known as Captain Samuel Young and we can find no record of his commission. Can someone find a possible commission or tell me where I might look for some record of one??? Thanks J. Ray Young

Tn Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Sumner/11996 Surname: Anderson, Blackwell, Chavis, Davis, Mitchell, Richards, Seymon, Threadgill ------------------------- Hi Clara, I've lost the trail of my Anderson ancestors after 1850, except for my gg-grandmother - Mary Ann Francis Anderson, born 1846 in Sumner Co. She would marry Joseph A. Blackwell in the early 1860's, and they would raise a family of eleven children in southern Illinois - Saline Co. Mary's obit. doesn't identify any siblings. In fact, it states that she was sent to northern IL at a very young age to live with a family, and could not remember any brothers and sisters. (Mary died in Saline Co. in 1921.) I'm a descendant of Annie Blackwell & John E. Chavis, both from southern IL. They married in 1890, and their daughter Ida Mae Chavis Davis, born 1903 died 1933, would become my grandmother. I will keep your grandparents Virgil Anderson and Alice Cooper in my files. If I find out anything on them, I'll pass it along. I have quite a few mysteries to unravel yet. Thank you very much for your response to my query. Good Luck on your research! Lela Browne

    2. In a message dated 06/13/2001 5:04:38 PM Central Daylight Time, FTht98@aol.com writes: > There are other commissions for individuals from "Mero District" and I am > uncertain why they are so designated Many of the individuals named were among the first settlers who came to the French Lick with James Robertson or, in the case of Peter Looney and some others, with John Donelson in the flotilla that came down the Tennessee River, up the Ohio, and then up the Cumberland. Most of the earliest settlers were Virginians, and just prior to coming to Tennessee, many of these men lived in the Powell Valley in present-day Lee County, VA. Don Estevan Miro was the Spanish Governor of New Orleans. The Cumberland settlements were designated the Mero District -- a misspelling of his name -- a bit of flattery hopeful of keeping the Mississippi River open to American navigation. The political situation was much too complicated to be explained in a few sentences, but keeping the Mississippi River open to American navigation was a life or death matter. The only route to markets for area produce was down river to New Orleans, and if the Spanish closed the river to Americans, the Cumberland settlements would die. It was a continuing concern to the settlers until the Louisiana Purchase. The Mero District was made up of Davidson, Sumner, and Tennessee Counties. In 1796 Tennessee County gave up its name to the State and became Robertson County with the western part becoming Montgomery County. Joyce

    2. JOHN W ROBINSON
    3. I am a GGG Grandson of Nathan Edward's oldest daughter, Priscilla Edwards Edwards, who married Thomas J. Edwards in Sumner County in 1812. I am almost certain that my 3G Grandfather Thomas Edwards had the middle initial J. At least that is what I can determine from Nathan Edwards's will which was made in about 1826. I have a copy of it somewhere in my files. I know that Priscilla had a brother named Thomas C. Edwards as well as other brothers named Littleberry and William. Inasmuch as my 3G Grandfather Thomas Edwards was born in 1782, I feel strongly that he was named for our founding father, Thomas Jefferson. All of you let me have your thoughts on this. I married a Robinson girl 57 years ago and her DAR certificate reads, Vivian Robinson Robinson. We can not find any other kinship for at least 300 years. Her ancestors in the AR were real heroes: A Lt. Joseph Robinson and a Major Moses Bond of South Carolina. The Major was hung by the British & Tory forces there in 1781. John W.
