The East Tennessee Historical Society is unveiling a new family heritage program, Civil War Families of Tennessee. Civil War Families of Tennessee (CWFT) seeks to identify and honor the sacrifices of the valiant soldiers on both sides of the conflict. This lineage program will link current descendants with their Civil War ancestors, encourage new research, and combine the experiences of thousands of individuals and families to tell more fully the story of the Civil War in Tennessee. If you are a direct or collateral descendant of any individual who served in Tennessee during the Civil War-Union or Confederate-you are eligible for membership in CWFT. Service may have been in either a Tennessee unit or any non-Tennessee unit which was active in the state. Membership is also open through an ancestor who served elsewhere but lived in Tennessee either before, during, or after the war. In order to recognize the service of the many young men who died unwed and without children, CWFT offers membership through collateral descent also. Like its sister program, First Families of Tennessee, CWFT applications and membership files will be housed in the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection (Knoxville, Tennessee) of the Knox County Public Library System where together the two projects will provide an unparalleled resource for family and historical research in the Volunteer State. CWFT members will receive a handsome certificate with the names of the applicant and the ancestor, along with the name of the ancestor's company and regiment. A roster of the members and their ancestors will eventually be published in book form. CWFT members will also be recognized at a grand reunion to be hosted by the East Tennessee Historical Society. For additional information about the Civil War Families of Tennessee project, including a downloadable application form, please visit the ETHS web site at www.east-tennessee-history.org. Anyone unable to download a form may request an application form by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Civil War Families of Tennessee c/o ETHS PO Box 1629 Knoxville, TN 37901-1629 Additional questions about the new CWFT project may also be addressed to civilwar@east-tennessee-history.org (Please note that ETHS does not provide email-based research assistance at this time.) The East Tennessee Historical Society, founded in 1834, is one of the oldest cultural institutions in the state of Tennessee. ETHS, a non-profit organization headquartered in Knoxville, is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and promoting the history of East Tennessee. The society's programs and activities are made possible through the support of its membership. The society's First Families of Tennessee family heritage program was founded in 1992 and now includes more than 13,000 members in 50 states and eight foreign nations.
My GG Grandmother Was Ann Mary Ackerman. Her Parents were Jacob Ackerman and Celia Clampett. We can't go back any further then that. If you find any information let me know. Thanks
Does anyone out there know anything about this man? He was listed on the Franklin Co., Il. 1860 census as: age 27 B. Tn. married to Susan V.(Young) age 25 B. Tn. I know that he bought land in Franklin Co., Il in 1854 and married shortly after that. I'd like to find his father and mother's name. No Randolphs are listed on the Franklin 1850 census, so my guess is that they came from Tn. to Il. between 1851-1854. He is my gggrandfather. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Sumner Co. area list readers William A. CARR and his wife Mary are listed in District 11, HH 226 in the 1850 Macon Co., TN Census. Also listed are the Children Sarah, Robert, and James William b. Oct 12, 1841. No further Census entries can be found for this family until his Son James William is listed in the 1870 Macon Co. census District 11; 97-97 as James W. age 28. James W. served in B Co. 37th KY Minted Inf (Federal). According to his pension papers He married Margaret J. Herald (d.o. of James "Chucker" Herald)of Smith Co., TN on March 31, 1861 in Lafayette, TN by Haley Smith Esq. J.P. I am attempting to determine what happened to William A. CARR and the remainder of the family. They may have moved to an adjacent county or into South Central KY as there is an entry in James W. CARR's pay vouchers indicating a pay stoppage for transportation from Louisville, where he was recovering from wounds suffered on the Federal raid on the Kings Slat Works near Saltville in SW VA, to Horse Cave in Hart Co. KY James "Chucker" Herald is listed in the 1850 Census in Smith Co. as being north of the Cumberland and east of Caney(sp?) Fork Rivers. Jane HERALD (various spellings including HERRELL, etc.) was born about 1801 in NC. I am also trying to locate him prior to 1850. Any insight on these families would be appreciated. I have the CARR/KERR family bang to James King KERR in SW VA. Dennis
Hello List Members, I have another question about a descendant of William White and Sarah "Sallie" Tyler. Is Clarence I. Suttle, born 22 August 1893 -died 3 March 1938, buried at Old Brush Cemetery, the husband of Versie A. (White) Suttle who is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery? All replies appreciated, Keith White gkwhite@brazoria.net
Hello list members. I am researching the descendants of William White and Sarah "Sallie" Tyler. One of their grand daughters, Nancy Jane White married John F. Link. "The Link Family", by T.W. Briley, 1930, gives the name of one of their sons, A.C. Link, born 18 September 1879. I believe his name is Archie Clayton Link. Social Security Death Index lists, Archie Link, born 18 September 1879, died February 1966, last known residence, Cottontown, Tennessee. There is a person named Clay Link buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Portland, Tennessee with the birth & death dates, 1881-1966. Is he the son of John F. and Nancy J. (White) Link? All replies appreciated, Keith White gkwhite@brazoria.net

Charles, What kind of paper work and where would you get the forms? Thanks, Eliz
My gt gt grandfather fought in both the Blackhawk War and the Civil War. When we found his gravesite he did not have a stone of any kind. I filled out the paperwork and sent it in and the federal government provided him with a veterans headstone. Charles Crain
