Looking for any information on the Howell families that might have lived in the area around the early 1800's, especially around 1833 or so. I am looking for a Sarah E. Howell and her family, have hit brick walls for years on her with no leads whatsoever. Thanks very much Robin
Is there anyone out there that is a descendant of Neal May? This man was still living in 1960. The only thing that I know about him is, he was my great grandmother's half brother. If anyone knows anything of him please contact me. Pat
Hi Larry .... Tried sending this information off-list, but the message was returned as undeliverable. Anyway, I finally made it to our local genealogy library. Unfortunately, the divorce resources for TN at our library only cover the years 1797-1858. I couldnt find your John Ben Gilbert or Emily Gertrude Berry. Maybe someone else on the list can help. I was going to check on an exact date of their marriage, but I ran out of time. Do you have their exact marriage date? If not, let me know & I'll check on my next visit. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Queries Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HiB.2ACI/787.1424.1.1 Message Board Post: At least one researcher on this George Lowery line has found indication that George and Jane Minter Lowery's child, Elizabeth, was raised by James Lowery (not sure what his relationship was to George). James Lowery migrated from Wilson County, TN (adjacent to Sumner County, TN) to Williamson County, IL about 1840. This Elizabeth Lowery or Lowry, married William Eaton in IL and the couple are living right next door to James Lowery (born 1781, NC-died 1855 IL) in the 1850 Williamson County, IL census. James Lowery's ancestors thought this Elizabeth was a child of James until they saw her county marriage record in IL to Wm Eaton. Apparently, on her marriage record in southern IL, she listed George and Jane Minter Lowery as her parents. Don't know if this is accurate or not as I've never seen the record. I'm also not sure of this, but George Lowery may have come to southern IL after the divorce from Jane Minter and died there. Basically, if you look at the 1820-1830 Sumner County, TN censuses, you'll find James, Rueben and William Lowry under odd spellings of their surname (I think in 1820, there are listed under something like LAWERIE. Rueben Lowery married Esther Davis. (Rueben was a distiller and apparently ran drinking establishment on Shackle Island (which is a town that sprang up around a drinking establishment in Sumner County, TN). Esther Davis Lowery as a widow wound up in Gallatin County, IL, where she is found on the 1860 census with children living with her and grown children heads of household in the same county. William Lowrey married Nancy Davis. He was a blacksmith in Sumner Co., TN. Rueben is listed as a "son" on William's estate papers. Both William and Nancy Davis Lowrey died in the 1840s, I believe and are buried in Sumner County, TN. Some of the kids of all three of these early Sumner County, TN Lowery/Lowrey/Lowry folks wound up in southern IL. According to my great-grandfather Thomas Jesse Lowry's Civil War record, he was born in 1838 in Sumner County, TN. I haven't been able to find him among any of these three early Sumner County Lowery/Lowrey families. Recently, I found a John Lowery in 1850 Gallatin County, IL with a Jesse T. Lowery, age 12, born TN, who is the right age and birthplace to be my Thomas J. Lowry. When I looked this family up on the 1860 Gallatin County census, John Lowery's wife had remarried a Wm Hensley, John was gone, and what I think may be Jesse T. Lowery is now going by perhaps his middle name, Thomas Lowery, and is living with the McGehee family. If this Thomas is John Lowery's son, then Thomas is living with his married sister and her family as I have a record in Gallatin of John Lowery's daughter marrying George McGehee. Anything ring a bell here, let me know! John Lowery or Lowry, who may have been the father of my Thomas Jesse Lowry, was born in 1817 in NC. I have yet to find a death date for John, a divorce date from his wife Rachael in IL between 1850-1855 (when she remarried) or any more info about him. One record has him born in 1817 in NC, dying in Iowa in 1890. If anyone can fill in the blanks, I'd be so appreciative.

And more than likely they liked Felix Grundy's politics. He was born in 1777 in VA and settled in KY where he studied law and entered politics. He moved to Nashville in 1807 and became one of the most successful criminal lawyers in the area. He later entered politics in TN, and although he wasn't personally associated with Andrew Jackson, his political philosophy was quite similar. He continued that support when Jackson was elected president and Grundy was in the U.S. Senate, and, like Jackson, was closely identified with issues important to the common man. So, thanks to naming their son Felix Grundy, you now know that your ancestors were Jackson Democrats. Joyce

Tennessee *was* North Carolina until 1790 at which time it became The United States Territory South of the River Ohio, and in 1796 it became the 16th state, Tennessee. May I recommend two other books by Walter Durham to help you get a handle on this period of Sumner County history. They are: _The Great Leap Westward, A History of Sumner County, Tennessee, From Its Beginnings to 1805_ and _Before Tennessee, The Southwest Territory 1790-1796_. These books should be available on Interlibrary loan. Walter Durham cites as his source for names of militia members as the Court Minutes, Vol. I, p. 1 at the Sumner County Archives. Carol Wells has abstracted court minutes for Sumner County from 1787-1805 and from 1808-1810. Also, she has abstracted Davidson Co. minutes for 1783-1792. These books are available for purchase from Heritage Books. Both of these books would point you to sources for your James Frazier and others. I'm not affiliated with Carol Wells or Heritage Books but find the Sumner Co. court minutes very useful in my own research. Happy hunting. Joyce
A year or so ago, I asked about this and I am still at square one with it so I'll try again. I think several of us are interested in this. Ca. 1787, some men were sent to Sumner County to protect early settlers from Indian attacks. They were part of the North Carolina Militia. Apparently, in 1796, these men became either the Tennessee Militia or the Sumner County Militia. It's fairly easy to find out who they were; some of the names are General James Winchester, George Winchester, William Snoddy, my gggg-grandfather, Major James Frazor, et al. I've learned a little from James Winchester's biography by Walter Durham. I thought that since they were in North Carolina before 1787, they could have been in the Revolutionary War but I can't find any Revolutionary War records on James Frazor/Frazier. I can't find any Tennessee/Sumner County military records on individuals at the Sumner County Archives or TSL&A. Is anybody a descendant of these militia men; and if so, have you found records on them? If so, where did you find the records? Thanks, Ronnie
List: I am looking for information on SILAS RAWLS, SR. who was born circa 1750. he served as a loyalist in the South Carolina militia. he moved to Sumner county, Tennessee circa 1796 with his brother-in-law Job BASS. These two men are on several deeds in the late 1790's and early 1800's. one man who shows up with them was Arthur HOGAN. There have been references to RAWLS CREEK & HOGAN'S CREEK, in either SUMNER and or SMITH county, TENNESSEE. Both Silas RAWLS and Job BASS left the SUMNER-SMITH county area in 1805-07 and moved to JEFFERSON co., MS. Can anyone tell me of a map showing these two creeks, or mayba a land plat map showing the land owners in that time period. There was also an ELISHA ROLLS that may have been a RAWLS. many thanks BOBBY RAWLS BIG SPRING, TEXAS
