    1. Boyd & other cemeteries
    2. Pamela Vick
    3. It might be worth a letter or phone call to a Funeral Home like Wilkerson-Wiseman to ask if anyone who works there might remember anything about the Boyd or other cemeteries. I know some of this funeral home's records are on-line. You might get lucky and someone remember some little piece of info to help locate some of these cemeteries on "private" land. Pam Vick

    1. It Is a Goodly Land
    2. Friends, Since my posting this morning I have been flooded with private e-mails asking where to purchase this book. As far as I and my librarian wife can discern, this book is not available any longer. It was a small private publication in 1982 by a local author and a 80+ year old historian. I called the 80 year old's grandsons tonight and he said there are no more of the books in print. If you are local to this area, there are of course copies of the book in the Goodlettsville TN and I am guessing the Gallatin libraries. I will gladly look in the index of our copy if you would like for me to see if there is someone you might be interested in. For look ups please post both to the Sumner list and to me off list at my e-mail below. Terry Coats Goodlettsville TN. [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])

    1. Re: [TNSUMNER] BOYD CEMETERY
    2. ***Boyd Cemetery*** 8/10 mile south of Cummings Crossroad and 6/10 mile Southwest Hello: I rec'd those same directions. I have searched til my fingers are blue for this place. I've called the Sumner & Robertson County Tax Assessors offices. Also called the Fire Department in Cottontown, actually called some homes of people who live in Cottontown. No one knows anything about the Boyd Cemetery or have ever heard of Cummings Crossroads. I do know : at one time, there was a house on Louisville & Nashville Pike (now I was told it is the 31W). There was a house where the Boyd Family lived. Behind the Boyd Family house was a cemetery. I have a copy of the census showing : Francis M. Dillard - head, Dovie (Boyd) Dillard - wife and Robert W. Boyd-Father N Law : they lived on L&N Pike in 1910 - I believe it was Mr. Robert Boyd's home at the time. I have a death certificate for my GGUncle Francis Marion Dillard that shows the name of the cemetery is BOYD CEMETERY, date of burial is 3/11/28, the undertaker came from Portland and the informant was Ida Taylor of Cottontown. Francis M Dillard died on March 10, 1928. There is even a reference from the "Link" diary to this event: Mary Johnson Link Hester's Diary 1928 - 1929 March 1928 Emma Hall died March 1, 1928, buried at Walnut Grove. ****Mr. Dillard died March 11, 1928, buried at the Boyd home on the L. and N. Pike. Mr. George Greer died March 31, 1928 buried at Mt. Olive, Nashville, Tenn. Bill Wilkerson opened his store March 24, 1928. I am truly stumped over this. The tax assessor has no record or listing for this and nobody REALLY knows where it is!

    2. In a message dated 3/11/2005 5:01:44 A.M. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Does anyone know what formal education was available for this time period in and around Gallatin as they were located on Station Creek Camp? Sharon, Deborah Henderson's "It Is a Goodly Land" the story of Goodlettsville and the early area in No. Davidson, So. Sumner says that the first settlers into this area were surprisingly literate 255 of those who signed the Cumberland Compact could sign their names. Only one made his mark. But she goes on to say that the next generation was not so lucky when it came to education. The next generation was too busy establishing this area to be schooled. Over the next 25 years few schools or academies were established. This is not to say that nothing was done to improve the minds of the children. There was a teacher on the Donelson float party that taught the kids at Ft. Nashboro. As you probably know the kids from Mansker Station were forced to move to Nashboro during hostilities and were probably "learned" something while there from that lady. One of my relatives a George Hamilton was the 1st teacher at Bledsoe's Lick. By 1785 the NC Leg. had est. Davidson Acad. for teaching the children of this area, but my guess is that when schools in this area were only teaching the kids who were the grandchildren of the first men and women to come here. My first ancestor to the area Thomas Hamilton's (Hamilton Station) grandchild was born in the station in 1803 and was an educated man who helped start Bethel College in McKenzie TN. I refer you to "It Is A Goodly Land" page 282 for the chapter on education in this area. Terry L. Coats Goodlettsville TN [email protected]

    1. BOYD CEMETERY
    2. Does anyone know what road the Boyd Cemetery is on? It is located in Dist. 15 Cottontown, Tn. and I believe it was originally on the "Boyd" property. I saw a reference to this cemetery and it said on the "L&N Pike" - is that Louisville-Nashville Pike? I did a search for Louisville-Nashville Pike and only came up with Nashville Pike. But saw nothing that referenced a Boyd Cemetery. Thanks for any help ! Christy

    1. Taylor family
    2. Jeannie Cohea
    3. I am looking for information on a Taylor family from the 1930 Sumner County, TN census. I think the head of household, William A Taylor is a son to one of my aunts in my Conquest family line. They are listed as: TAYLOR, Wm A 50, Alice 42, William Jr. 10, Annie 8 I think William A is buried at Bush's Chapel Cemetery and his birth and death dates are Nov 22, 1875-Sept. 25, 1953. I don't know Alice's maiden name and don't know when or if the two children married. If someone descends from this family line, I'll be more than happy to share the information I have on the Conquest family. Thanks so much!

    1. Education in Sumner Co.
    2. My gg grand father William B. Reeves was living in Sumner Co. at age 10 in 1803 through age 16 in 1809. As far as I can see his parents could not read or write. Yet he and his older brothers did. He later became clerk of the City of Lafayette La. and a judge in Harris County Texas and used the title Esquire taking private law cases. The earliest signature I have for him is signing his provision receipt in the war of 1812. Does anyone know what formal education was available for this time period in and around Gallatin as they were located on Station Creek Camp? Thank you for any Information. Sharon

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/HiB.2ACI/2754 Message Board Post: I decided to go ahead and most the message I was trying to get to Frances Trimble in hopes that either she or some other knowledgeable person might respond. I was digging around in my files on the McDonalds/McDaniels of Tennessee and puzzling about the apparent contradictions regarding the land grants awarded to Magness/Magnus. I then remembered that there was a Magness who married his cousin Agnes in North Carolina, etc. and wonder if this means there were two different Magness/Magnus's running around the area about the same time. I am confident that the Magness who married Tabitha Morris and who settled in what became Wilson County is my ancestor but, like you and other dedicated genealogists, I am trying to find a logical explanation for the two land grants in two different areas of Davidson County. Another anomaly is that one Magnus fought in the King's Mountain Militia while the other was a Virginian not likely to have been in that particular Militia. Can you affirm my contention that there were two different Magness/Magnus's or am I just running in circles? Thanks for any input you may have.
