How would I check and see if a person had applied for a patent, on an invention? This would have been possibly in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Linda --------------------------------- Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page

After a few years I have finally found documents to verify my John Reeves was living in Iredell Co. N.C. prior to coming to Sumner Co. in 1802. There is a power of attorney in court records in Iredell that was made in Sumner Co. Tenn in October 1801 by a John Nichols it named John Reevis as the principal to take this document back to Iredell to settle the estate of his father Jacob NIchols. On the 1790 census of Iredell Jacob Nichols is a neighbor Edmond Reaves father of John. Does anyone know this Nichols family? Of course to complicate the situation the name has been spelled Reavis, Reevis Ravis Reves Reives Reeves Reviss. John made the trip back to Iredell and registered the POA then returned to Sumner Co. with his family in the fall of 1802. Does anyone on the list have family with origins in Iredell, Surry, Rowan,Rutherford areas of North Carolina? When did they arrive in Sumner Co? Thanks for any assistance. Sharon

Not related but did some lookups for you, mostly from books I own. The only mentions I can find of the name HENRY DARNALL are: 1. From the book, "Red River Settlers - records of the settlers of Northern Montgomery, Robertson, and Sumner Counties, TN", by Edythe Rucker Whitley LAND GRANTS ISSUED BY NORTH CAROLINA (Tennessee land granted as pay for service in the Revolution) Grant # 3366 to Henry Darnell, dated Feb 12, 1800. Warrant #1343 for 1,325 acres. Recorded Book D-4, page 287. MONTGOMERY County. Grant # 3378 to Henry Darnell, no service, dated Janaury 12, 1801. Warrant #27 for 1,849 acres. Recorded book D-4, page 294. Montgomery County, south side of Cumberland River. (Note - The book, "Tennessee Genealogical Records", by Edythe Rucker Whitley state that Grant #3378, to Captain Henry Darnall was issued in 1801 for land in ROBERTSON County.) Grant # 3396 to Henry Darnell, dated November 15, 1802. Warrant #27 for 503 acres. Recorded Book D-4, page 305. Montgomery County, north side Red River. Grant # 3377 to CAPTAIN Henry Darnell, dated Dec 1, 1801. Warrant #27 for 163 acres. Recorded Book D-4, page 293. Montgomery County, south side of Cumberland River. 2. Henry Darnel is shown on the 1820 Census of Montgomery Co TN. QUESTION - Have you contacted the DAR to see if they have a file on Henry Darnell? If they do, the file will contain the names of his children. If you haven't contacted the DAR, they will do a free lookup for you, to request a lookup, go to www.dar.org DARNELL'S IN SUMNER CO TN 1. The book, "Marriages of DAVIDSON Co TN, 1789-1850", by the same author, also shows NO Darnell marriages. 4. Have you used the Search Engines at the Sumner Co TN web sites found at: freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~providence/ourpage.html and http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/index.html 5. Have you seen the following before? It seems that the Sumner Co TN Darnell's descended from this John Darnell from Maryland. James Darnell From History of Tennessee From the Earliest Time to The Present Goodspeed Publishing Co. Nashville, TN 1887 Retyped for the page by Eileen McCarey 2001 James Darnall, farmer and stock raiser of the Second District of Sumner County, is a son of John S. and Elizabeth (Dassy) Darnall, and was born in Sumner County in 1827, being one of nine children, seven living. The father was born in MARYLAND in 1784; was raised in that State and married there in 1809, moving to Sumner County in 1819, and continued farming in that county until his death in 1852. He was a volunteer in the war of 1812. The mother was also a native of Maryland, born about 1782, and died in 1854. Our subject had limited educational advantages. October 19, 1854, he married Miss Amelia T., daughter of James and Jane Hamilton, both natives of Tennessee. Mrs. Darnall was born in Sumner County in 1836, and they had ten children, four sons and two daughters living: Ida, Taylor, Robert Lee, Ernest, Effie and William T. Mr. Darnall has been living on his present farm since 1859. He owns 205 acres of very productive land, pleasantly located three and one-half miles southeast of Gallatin. He has been a man of frugal and industrious habits. In politics [he] has been a life-long Democrat; his first presidential vote was cast for Gen. Cass in 1848. Mrs. Darnall is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. ***NOTE *** 1. THE 1790 CENSUS OF FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND LISTS A HENRY DARNALL (NEXT DOOR TO A JOHN DARNALL). 2. Maryland Marriage records show that Henry Darnall married Mary Leek Sept 3, 1785 in FREDERICK County, Maryland. 3. John S. Darnall (of Sumner Co., mentioned above) married Elizabeth Darsey Nov 21, 1809 in Prince George County, Maryland. Hope something above helps.
