As I type this I am listening to news about the USS COLE being attacked today in Yemen. 5 dead, dozens missing, and hurt. I live in Va. Beach and this will hit us all hard. Please remember the crew of the USS COLE and their families in your prayers. My husband just retired from the Navy, he was an engineman and where the ship was hit would have been where he would have been working had he been on a ship that was hit in this area. I would like to send a poem about those great men and their job to honor those. It is called SNIPE'S Lament. Snipe's Lament Now each of us from time to time has gazed upon the sea And watched the warships pulling out,to keep the country free And most of us have read a book or heard a lusty tale, about the men who sail these ships, through lightning, wind and hail. Its down below the water line that it takes a living toll A hot metal, living hell that sailors call the hole. Where boilers like a hellish heart, with blood of angry steam are molded gods without remorse ,nightmares in a dream. The men who keep the fires lit and make the engines run Are strangers to the world of light, and rarely see the sun They have no time for man or God,no tolerance for fear their aspect pays no living thing the tribute of a tear, For there's not much that men can do that these men haven't done. beneath the decks deep in the hole to make the engines run. And every hour of every day, they keep the watch in hell For if the fires ever fail, their ship's a useless shell. When ships converge to have a war, upon an angry sea the men below just grimly smile at what their fate might be They're locked below like men foredoomed who hear no battle cry. It's well assumed that if they're hit,the men below will die. I've seen these sweat-soaked heros fight,in superheated air, to keep their ship alive and right, though no one knows they're there. So when you see a ship pull out,to meet a warlike foe. remember faintly, if you can,the men who sail below.
Are there any Phelps researchers in Sullivan County? My gr gr grandmother, Jennie Moore, married W. Sam Phelps. Sam Phelps was her second husband. My gr grandmother Venie Moore was half sister to Rob Phelps son of Sam and Jennie. Any info on this Phelps connection would be appreciated. Descendants of W. Sam Phelps Generation No. 1 1. W. SAM1 PHELPS was born 1859, and died 1931. He married MARY JANE MOORE December 06, 1883 in Sullivan County, TN, daughter of ALLEN MOORE and MARY MARTIN. She was born July 20, 1854 in Washington County, VA, and died 1931 in Bristol, Sullivan County, TN. Notes for MARY JANE MOORE: In the South and the Carrier families the story of Jennie Moore was that Venie and Ed were born out of wedlock and took their mother's name Moore. It was said that Jennie came from Saltville, VA. According to Jack Cross, who Louella Burnette verifies that he is descended from our Ed Moore, she was a Jones and married Floyd Moore. Louella and I are still not convinced that Jennie is a Jones. Jennie is buried in Ordway Cemetery as "Jane Wife of Samuel Phelps 1857-1931". Her nickname Jennie probably came from Virginia or Jane since Jane was one of her names. Jack Cross has her name as Virginia Jones and I have her name as Jennie (Jane) Moore. The Marriage License of Edward Moore and Olliene (Olivene) Moore gave Ed's parents as Henry & Jennie Moore. I will list Jennie's name as Mary Jane Moore until I can prove otherwise. She may be the same Mary Jane Moore that is the daughter of Allen Moore and Mary Martin and I will list her as such until proof is found otherwise. I have found no son of Allen and Mary named Floyd and I will list Floyd as Floyd Henry Moore parents unknown until proof is found otherwise. Data I have found on Mary Jane Moore: At the Historical Society in the Courthouse on Thursday 12 August, 1999, I researched the births of all Moores that had Allen & Mary Moore as parents. I found Mary Jane Moore. I found in the "Deaths Washington County" a Susan Moore age 2 years 6 months died 16 December 1879, daughter of Floyd and Jane Moore. Susan was born and died in Mendota, VA. I have not heard of a Susan from family so I don't know if this is my Floyd and Jane Moore. It may be that she was forgotten over the many years. Marriage Notes for W.
