Return To Top KINGSPORT - Mary Sue Hill, 80, died Monday afternoon (April 15, 2002) at National Healthcare in Bristol, Va. She was born in Pounding Mill, near Tazewell, Va., the oldest of nine children. She attended the public schools of Richlands, Va., graduating from Richlands High School as the valedictorian of her class. After earning a four-year degree from Milligan College, she became the secretary of Eastman's Cellulose Esters and Plastics Development Department for about eight years before resigning to be a full-time housewife and mother. For more than 50 years, Mrs. Hill had been a member of the Crusade Sunday School class and the sanctuary choir of First Broad Street United Methodist Church of Kingsport. She also sang in the Kingsport Choral Society, which existed for several years in the 1940's and 1950's. She had been a member of United Methodist Women since the organization began and had been a circle chairman several times. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and for many years was an active board member and promoter of the Kingsport Community Concert Association. She was a charter member of the Home Gardeners Club and she had been helping to prepare and deliver Meals on Wheels for the last several years. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Ringstaff; by three brothers, "Junior," Earl and Don Ringstaff; and by two sisters, Kathleen Bonanno and Elizabeth Layne. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Roy O. Hill Jr. of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Karen Hill of Knoxville, and Howard and Barbara Hill of Vidalia, Ga.; two granddaughters, Susan Hill, 15, and Sarah Hill, 7, of Vidalia, Ga.; three sisters, Margaret Rountree of Hampton, Va., Doris Burroughs of Abingdon, Va., and Elfie Ray Forrest of Richlands, Va.; and a number of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the East Lawn Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Broad Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Edwards officiating. Mrs. Hill will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services. Entombment will follow in the East Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be the Crusade Sunday School class. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the Music Department of the First Broad Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1346, Kingsport, Tenn. 37662.
