    1. Looking for Jacob Henry Smith's (1835-1879) Parents
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Smith Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/igB.2ACE/2398 Message Board Post: When my grandfather William Lewis Smith died on 10 Feb 1940, I was 6 years old. Now, I am looking at his death certificate and I find my grandfathers parents Jacob Henry & Nancy Jane Bennett Smith listed. I never knew who my grandpa's parents were until now. I got a marriage certificate from Greene Co. TN on Nancy Bennett who married Jacob Henry on 17 Nov 1858 in Greene Co. TN. Jacob listed his home as Hawkins Co. TN. But, I have hit a dead end with that. Maybe, his parents were not from Hawkins but Sullivan. I understand that those counties were formed off of NC, which became Washington, than Greene than Sullivan. Any info or guidance on this will be greatly appreciated. George W. Agnew Columbus, OH

    1. Elijah Cross and Ann Lane Looney
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Cross,Looney Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/igB.2ACE/2394 Message Board Post: Most people believe what Homer Smith says about Elijah being married to Ann Lane Looney. In regards to the Civil War Questionaires on file these men were in their 70's and 80's. Also, no one knows that these men filled out the questioaires. They may very well have been submitted by other family members. Why were these questionaires issued in the first place? Sounds like a witch hunt to me. Sounds like the government were trying to identify the families and descendants so they can keep track of "the traitors". Most people believe that Elijah and his brothers were at the battle of Kings Mountain. I have all four of these boys Revolutionary Pensions and "NONE" of them were at the Battle of Kings Mountain and there are no official documents linking them to this battle either. William was told to go home because he didn't even have a horse. None of these boys were even remotely close to Kings Mountain so don't be duped by this story. In regards to Elijah and his suppos! ed marriage to Ann Lane Looney. I have personally proven Homer Smith wrong at least 3 times in the last 30 days. Elijah may have married her but there is no proof of it and I for one am not going to accept the writings of someone who I've proven wrong nor do I want to accept the writings of a man that states in the forward of his manuscript that he not going to discuss the nationalities of his Cross family members. He knew where they were from but wouldn't put it in his book. Why would he say something like that? Was he ashamed? In regards to the wife of Elijah being Cherokee. She may have been but there is no proof and the Commission on Indian Affairs for the Eastern Cherokee stated such to Elijah's granddaughter Ann Cross Taylor. She applied for funds under the removal program and was refused as there was no proof that Elijah Cross married an indian woman. There was no proof that Ann Cross Taylor was in any way descended from Cherokee Blood. Ann Cross Taylor kne! w who her grandmother was and she named her but it was not "Ann Lane". She also knew and it's obvious in her writings that her grandmother was a Cherokee Indian.
