Hello Listers, I am new to this List. I may have written some time ago about my Cross family, but couldn't find anything. I finally, acquired my ggrandfather's Civil War pension papers. His family lived in Carter Co. and I found that they used an alias of the name Smith. We know him as James Cross, but he joined the Union with the alias David M. Smith. Knowing the Cross family was among the early settlers in Sullivan I was wondering if any one could help me find my gggrandfather's family. He went by the name of James M Smith. His first wife was Lovina Bowers of Carter Co. I've been given information on her family, but I'm still looking for his family. I get the felling he was not from Carter Co. More curious is that they used the alias of Smith, rather than their surname Cross. I have affidavits for the pension from men who knew David Smith and verified he was James Cross and the family used both names. The family is listed in Carter Co. in the 1850 and 1860 census as Smith. Does anyone in Sullivan Co. research know of this alias use or Cross' related to them? Thank you, Joan Williams, Miami, FL.
