    1. Descendants of Mordecai Ornduff
    2. Fred South
    3. Descendants of Mordecai Ornduff Generation No. 1 1. MORDECAI ORNDUFF He married FRANCES UNKNOWN. Children of MORDECAI ORNDUFF and FRANCES UNKNOWN are: 2. i. JOSEPH S. ORNDUFF, b. May 16, 1818, Virginia; d. September 21, 1904. ii. THOMAS ORNDUFF, m. ANN ELIZA MOORE, September 14, 1854. iii. JAMES ORNDUFF. Notes for JAMES ORNDUFF: James is the gr gr grandfather of Chris Knoble who gave me a big start on my Ornduff branch. Generation No. 2 2. JOSEPH S. ORNDUFF (MORDECAI) was born May 16, 1818 in Virginia, and died September 21, 1904. He married (1) CATHERINE HARTSOCK Bef. 1844, daughter of UNKNOWN HARTSOCK. She was born 1815 in Virginia. He married (2) SUSANNAH EVELINE MOORE March 22, 1854, daughter of ARTHUR MOORE and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN. She was born February 20, 1820, and died August 23, 1916. Notes for JOSEPH S. ORNDUFF: Surname could be Orenduff/Ornduff/Arenduff/Arnduff or other variations. Received the following from Chris Knoble: According to their marriage record of 3/22/1854, Joseph (widow) was the son of Mordecai and Frances Ornduff and his wife was Susannah Eveline Moore, daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth Moore. Joseph's first wife was Catherine Hartsock. Anne E. Ornduff (b. 2/4/1854) must be Catherine's daughter since the birth date you have for her is before Joseph's marriage to Susannah. She is probably the Elizabeth listed in the 1860 census as being 7 yrs old, which fits with middle initial E. you have for Anne. Joseph's other children by Catherine are Jeremiah, John B., and Susan. Your great-grandmother Jennie Ornduff would then be half-sister to Anne and the other children mentioned above. I believe your Jennie is the one referred to in the 1870 census as Macaler J. Ornduff, age 10. The other children of Joseph and Susannah that I have found are: Larenia A. (b. 12/31/1857); Virginia E. (age 9 in 1870); and Alice E. (age 6 in 1870). Alice E. is most likely the Alice ORENDUFF who married your Nathan Moore in 1883. Joseph's brother Thomas married Susannah's sister Ann Eliza Moore 9/14/1854. One of his other brothers, James, is my great-great-grandfather. That makes us 4th cousins. Please contact me if you need anything else. Also, I would love to have other data you might have on Joseph's descendants or any other ORNDUFFs. Chris Knoble Clifton, VA Isaac Hartsock and his family are in the 1850 Washington Co., VA Census living with Joseph and Catherine Oinduff. I am assuming he is a brother of Catherine since her maiden name is Hartsock. More About JOSEPH S. ORNDUFF: Census: 1850, Washington Co., VA, age 35 Occupation: 1850, Farmer More About CATHERINE HARTSOCK: Census: 1850, Washington Co., VA, age 35 Children of JOSEPH ORNDUFF and CATHERINE HARTSOCK are: i. Children of JOSEPH ORNDUFF and SUSANNAH MOORE are: v. ANNE ORNDUFF, b. February 04, 1854; d. July 16, 1930, Bristol, Sullivan County, TN; m. UNKNOWN LANDRUM. vi. LARENIA A. ORNDUFF, b. December 31, 1857. vii. VIRGINIA E. ORNDUFF, b. Abt. 1861. 3. viii. MACALER JENNIE ORNDUFF, b. Abt. 1862, VA; d. Abt. 1925, Bristol, Sullivan County, TN. ix. ALICE E. ORNDUFF, b. Abt. 1864; m. NATHAN T. MOORE, October 09, 1883, Sullivan County, Tennessee; b. Abt. 1852, VA; d. Abt. 1900, Bristol, Sullivan County, TN. Notes for NATHAN T. MOORE: In the 1910 Census for Sullivan County he was listed as being born in VA. and his age was 58. Mother & father listed as being born in VA. Married 21 years. Occupation listed as Wagon Driver. In the "Sullivan County Tennessee Marriage Records 1863-1893" as transcribed by Shelia Hunt, There are two Nathan Moores. One Nathan T. Moore married Alice Orenduff on 9 Oct. 1883. The other Nathan Moore married Jennie Arenduff on 26 Dec.1888. The latter matches with the 1910 Census. I assume both Nathans are the same person.. Generation No. 3 3. MACALER JENNIE ORNDUFF (JOSEPH S., MORDECAI) was born Abt. 1862 in VA, and died Abt. 1925 in Bristol, Sullivan County, TN. She married NATHAN T. MOORE December 26, 1888 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. He was born Abt. 1852 in VA, and died Abt. 1900 in Bristol, Sullivan County, TN. Notes for MACALER JENNIE ORNDUFF: In the 1910 Census for Sullivan County I could not make out her name, it did not look like "Alice" though and it could have been "Jennie". She was listed as being born in VA. and her age was 48. She was the mother of 7 children with 6 living. There are 6 listed in the census, Claude may not have been born yet. Mother & father listed as being born in VA. I believe her surname is Ornduff and not Arenduff as transcribed In the "Sullivan County Tennessee Marriage Records 1863-1893" by Shelia Hunt and on their record of marriage at the County Clerks Office. 11/12/1999 Ray C. Moore Jr., s/o Ray Moore, s/o Nathan Moore, 401 Poplar St. Bristol, TN, said that Anne Landrum, buried in East Hill Cemetery, is the sister of Jennie Ornduff. He said Nathan and Jennie are buried in the same area. 11/20/1999 My dad R.E. South, Jr., Bristol, TN, called me today and said that his 1st cousin Virginia (Blevins, Moore) Wyatt called him and relayed family bible data that she had copied before sending the bible to another cousin in Philadelphia, PA. Here's what is in it: Their grandfather is Nathan T. Moore died 10 May 1917, no date of birth. Their grandmother is Jennie Ornduff, no birth or death dates. Jennie's sister is Anne E. Ornduff born 4 Feb 1854 died 16 July 1930. Father is Joseph S. Ornduff born 16 May 1818 died 21 Sep 1904. Mother is Susie F. Ornduff (maiden name not given) born 20 Feb 1820 died 23 Aug 1916. See Notes for her father Joseph. Her name Macaler is based on findings by Chris Knoble. Notes for NATHAN T. MOORE: In the 1910 Census for Sullivan County he was listed as being born in VA. and his age was 58. Mother & father listed as being born in VA. Married 21 years. Occupation listed as Wagon Driver. 1. James Myers, Piney Flats, Sullivan County, TN
    2. Hi LIst, Have recently discovered an indirect connection to James Myers, supposedly "of Piney Flats" in Sullivan County. He later moved to Hawkins County, TN, before or after he married his first wife, Sallie Skelton. Both James and his two wives, (1) Sallie Skelton and (2) Mary Mullins Bernard, are buried in the McPheeters Bend Church Cemetery in Hawkins County, TN. I am a distant cousin of Mary Mullins first husband, Wesley Thomas Bernard, Jr. Interested in any clues to James Myers' ancestry and how he may fit into the larger Myers family. 1. Simpson/Sympson Families
    2. R J Baker
    3. Are there any descendents of the Simpson/Sympson families in Sullivan Co., TN? I am trying to track down the parents of Henry Simpson born 1806, VA, and think there is reason to believe that he may have been the grandson of Henry Sympson of Sullivan Co., TN. Henry Sympson's son William was a captain in the militia in Sullivan Co., TN and there was also a William Simpson who was a captain in the Greene Co., TN Militia in 1813. I also found a list of men who had land grants to claim in Sullivan Co., TN and William Simpson was listed on that list in the newspaper in Knoxville, TN. A William Simpson signed a deed for Daniel Simpson in Knox Co., TN in 1824. My Henry Simpson, whose first record available is in Greene Co., TN where he married Anna Carter in 1827, named his first son Daniel and his second William. I don't know what if any naming pattern this would be. I would appreciate any help on this family that you might be able to give. Barbara

    1. Re: Zachariah Jobe
    2. Brenda Brown
    3. Randy, I looked on my map and did not find a Little Horse Gap. I'm not being picky when I tell you this, but it may help with the search. It is actually Fall Branch instead of Fall's Branch and it is located in Washington County near Sullivan County. We have lived in Fall Branch for 3 years, but I am not really familiar with it. I asked my husband and gave him your name. He offered the following information which may be of some help. There were and are some Jobe families living in Sullivan Gardens area of Sullivan County (not far from Fall Branch). There is a now a creek call Horse Creek, which may have been known as Little Horse Gap at one time. If this is the Horse Creek section, it would be near the town of Fall Branch. I just remembered, we have a friend, the Jones family. They live in a large two-story white house at the edge of town (Fall Branch). This house belonged to a doctor for years. There is a falls on this property which flows into Horse Creek, which then runs from the edge of Washington Co. into Sullivan Co. If this will jog someone on the list, some of the Jobes live near the Lone Star Road in Sullivan Gardens. Unfortunately, these areas become known by different or similar names as years go by, at least that is what I have found with my family. Sorry if this rambled and was long, but I thought an explaination of the location of the house, etc. might jog someone's memory. Lots of luck and hope this is of some help. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Monday, November 29, 1999 5:46 PM Subject: Zachariah Jobe >I am looking for any info on The old JOBE Cemetery located on a hill >near Little Horse Gap overlooking JOBE'S Fields. 1. More on Junior Order of United American Mechanics
    2. Fred South
    3. Previously I said that I am searching for information on the Junior Order that was active in the Bristol, VA/TN area in the late 1800s to early 1900s. My gr grandfather James Edward South (1862-1904) was a member of the Junior Order. The Lodge symbol of the Order is on his gravestone. The symbol looks like a carpenter's square cradling a compass with an arm with the hand holding a mallet. If I could locate records of the Junior Order then I might be able to find more data on James, such as who his parents were. The following data on the Junior Order I recorded from Bristol City Directories: Bristol City Directory for 1896-97. Nothing listed for The Junior Order of United American Mechanics Bristol City Directory for 1905-06. The Junior Order of United American Mechanics Border City Council No. 126 - meets every Wednesday at 8PM Knights of Honor Hall. C. H. Richards Sec. I found two (2) Richards in the Directory that may fit . Cambell Richards, driver East Tenn Brewing Co. Home is Scanton near V&S W RY Charles Richards, drayman. Home is 912 Railway. Bristol City Directory for 1910. The Junior Order of United American Mechanics Border City Council No. 126 - meets every Wednesday at 8PM Knights of Honor Hall. No Sec. Listed. Bristol City Directory for 1923-24. The Junior Order of United American Mechanics Border City Council No. 162 {may be a misprint and should have been 126} - meets every Wednesday at 8PM at 648 State Street. Hall. W. R. Anderson Sec. 1. Mary Webb, 1811-1876
    2. Truman Adkins
    3. My great-great-great grandmother, Mary Webb, was born (probably) in the Hickory Tree area of Sullivan County, Tennessee on 2 June 1811. I think her father may have been Jacob Webb, as he appears in the 1830 census with a female in his household of approximatly the correct age. Mary was married about 1835 to Thomas Hopkins, s/o Hickory Tree resident Richard Hopkins. The couple had one daughter, my ancestor Mariah Jane Hopkins there on 30 October 1836. The following year or so Mary, Thomas and thei child returned to Thomas's birthplace in Patrick County, Virginia and remained there the rest of their lives. Mary Webb died there 4 June 1876 of a "Nervous Condition". The names of her other children were: Martha Adeline, Susan Elizabeth, James Madison, Samuel Austin, Joseph H., Lucinda Ann and Margaret Ann Hopkins. I have been unable to connect Mary with any of the Webb families thru public records, I am hoping there may be a researcher out there who has access to a Bible or family histories that may include her. 1. Robert E. South and Ollie V. Moore Family
    2. Fred South
    3. My SOUTH, MOORE, THOMAS, and JOHNSON roots are in East Tennessee and SW Virginia, centered around Bristol, TN/VA. My mother is MABLE VIRGINIA THOMAS and both of us were born in Dante, VA. My dad ROBERT EDWARD SOUTH Jr. was born in Bristol, TN. The following is data I have on my grandmother OLLIE VIRGINIA MOORE the first wife of my grandfather ROBERT EDWARD SOUTH. Children of JAMES SOUTH and SARAH MOORE are: 1. ROBERT EDWARD SOUTH, b. December 24, 1897, Bristol, TN; d. January 1986, Kingsport, TN. 2. OLLIE MAE SOUTH, b. February 02, 1900; d. Unknown. 3. HUBERT L. SOUTH, b. October 21, 1902, Bristol, TN; d. April 12, 1981, Bristol, VA. R.E. South is my grandfather. My grandfather's last occupation was as Manager of the Kingsport Laundry. He is buried at the East Lawn Cemetary in Kingsport, TN. My grandmother is OLLIE VIRGINIA MOORE daughter of NATHAN MOORE and unknown. In the 1910 Census for Sullivan County I could not make out the name of Nathan Moore's wife, it did not look like "Alice" though and it could have been "Jennie". She was listed as being born in VA. and her age was 48. She was the mother of 7 children with 6 living. There are 6 listed in the census, Claude may not have been born yet. Mother & father listed as being born in VA. I believe her surname is ORENDUFF and not ARENDUFF as transcribed In the "Sullivan County Tennessee Marriage Records 1863-1893" by Shelia Hunt, The names are so similar that I think it must have been misunderstood. Looking in the book by Shelia there are additional Orenduffs that were married in Sullivan County but only one Arenduff. The other Orenduff was Alice who married Nathan T. Moore on 10/9/1883. The similarities of these two marriages make me wonder how if at all these two couples may be related or if they may be the same people with mixed up dates. The 1910 Census had them married 21 years putting their marriage date about 1888 or 1889. The Sullivan County, TN marriage record of December 26, 1888 for Nathan Moore and Jennie Arenduff fits the census data. In the 1910 Census for Sullivan County he was listed as being born in VA. and his age was 58. Mother & father listed as being born in VA. Nathan's occupation listed as Wagon Driver. Children of NATHAN MOORE and JENNIE ORENDUFF are: i. MITTIE2 MOORE, b. 1890, Tenn. ii. RAY MOORE, b. 1892, Tenn. iii. GALON MOORE, b. 1899, Tenn. iv. IRENE MOORE, b. 1902, Tenn.; m. PEARL L. Aft. 1910, Tenn. OLLIE VIRGINIA MOORE was born June 03, 1903 in Tenn., and died July 11, 1961 in Bristol, TN. She married (1) ROBERT EDWARD SOUTH October 04, 1919 in Sullivan County, TN, son of JAMES SOUTH and SARAH MOORE. He was born December 24, 1897 in Bristol, Sullivan County, TN, and died January 1986 in Kingsport, Sullivan County, TN. She married (2) FLOYD COMBS. He was born June 01, 1899 and died July 12, 1989 in Bristol, TN. Children of OLLIE MOORE and ROBERT SOUTH are: i. ROBERT EDWARD JUNIOR SOUTH, b. August 01, 1920, Bristol, TN. The following is data I have on my gr grandmother SARAH LOUVENA MOORE, the second wife of my gr grandfather JAMES EDWARD SOUTH. 6/13/97 At the Sullivan County Clerks Office in Blountville, I found the marriage record for James E. South and Sarah L. Moore on Jan. 8, 1897. James is buried at the Paperville Cemetery on Church Circle off the Paperville Road and Old Jonesborough Road. It had a flat stone with the following inscription: "JAMES E. SOUTH BORN DEC 23, 1855 DIED APR. 6, 1904 A precious one has gone. A voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in our home. Which never can be filled.". At the top of the stone is a symbol similar to a Masonic symbol. The difference in the symbols is where the Masonic symbol had what looks like a carpenter's square cradling a compass with the letter G centered, my gr grandfather's symbol had in the place of the G there was an arm with the hand holding a mallet. The born date on his stone is incorrect. James was born in 1862 not 1855. In the 1900 Census James is listed as a Carpenter. He and his wife Venie had been married 3 years. Children listed: Sarah 17, Kenni 12, Robert 2, Ollie born Feb 1900. Sarah and Kenni were by his first wife Mary C. Crumley who may have died. I don't have any info on what happened to Mary or to their daughter Laura. Children of JAMES SOUTH and SARAH MOORE are: 1. ROBERT EDWARD SOUTH, b. December 24, 1897, Bristol, TN; d. January 1986, Kingsport, TN. 2. OLLIE MAE SOUTH, b. February 02, 1900; d. Unknown. 3. HUBERT L. SOUTH, b. October 21, 1902, Bristol, TN; d. April 12, 1981, Bristol, VA. My father is R.E. South Jr. My Aunt Shirley and he are the only survivors at this date. My paternal gr grandmother is SARAH LOUVENA MOORE, a.k.a. Venie Moore, daughter of FLOYD MOORE and JENNIE MOORE. Venie was b. May 1877 and d. 1960 in Bristol, TN. Jennie Moore, a.k.a. Jane Phelps wife of Sam Phelps, was said to be from Saltville, VA and Floyd Moore was from Abingdon, VA. I have two sources of family data on Venie, Jack Cross descended fron Venie's brother Ed Moore and Louella Burnette (Jones/Carrier/South) descended from Ollie Mae South a daughter of James and Venie. Jack Cross is the same Jack Cross that manages the Sullivan County site at http://www.tngenweb.usit.com/sullivan/ . Jack reported that Ed and Venie were children of Floyd Moore and Virginia Jones. Floyd he said was the son of Allen Moore and Mary Martin of Virginia. He said that Ed Moore was raised by his grandparents Allen and Mary Moore. Jack's first message relating to our family connection is "Ed Moore, Edward Daniel Moore was my greatgrandfather. Yes he was a photographer in Knoxville but in fact travel throughout East Tenn and VA. He was originally a coal miner living in Red Ash VA. If you will contact my genealogy web page you will see that "Popaw" as he was called had 4 daughter and three sons. His daughter Mar Elizabeth Moore was my paternal grandmother. In his later years Popaw was more known for his photography. In fact, I still have his carrying case and many of his old photos and negatives, some of which are on glass plates." Jack's second message was "Just remembered there is some information I have that is not on the web pages as I cannot confirm it yet...Ed Moore's parent I have as Floyd Moore and Virginia Jones. However he was raised my his paternal grandparents Allen Moore and Mary Martin. (Both parents and grandparent lived in the Abingdon Va area). Now the following is unsubstantiated because my grandmother would never really talk about her ancestry for some reason. But family "rumor" always had it that "popaw" (Ed Moore) was part Cherokee on his mother's side." Louella said that the story she heard was that Ed and Venie were born out of wedlock and they were given their mother's maiden name Moore. I have researched what I can on Allen Moore and Mary Martin hoping to find something on Floyd Moore. I do have a Mary Jane Moore born to Allen and Mary July 20, 1854. I do know that Jennie's grave stone at the ORDWAY Cemetery has her name as Jane Wife of Samuel Phelps 1857-1931. I do know that the names of Ed's parents are Henry & Jennie Moore from his marriage license. I DO NOT have a record that ties Jennie Moore or Allen Moore or Edward Moore to Floyd Moore. I DO NOT have a record that gives Jennie's name as Virginia or Jones. All that I have that ties these names together is what Jack and Louella gave me. I have a couple cases where a Moore marries another Moore so that is not unusual and may be the case here. I can't immagine a mother splitting her children between herself and her spouse's parents. It does seem more logical that her parents kept Edward but I need to find a record to prove it. Fredrick Thomas South Goose Creek, SC

    3. One of my dead ends is my great grandfather JAMES EDWARD SOUTH, his first wife MARY C. CRUMLEY, and his first two children LAURA E. SOUTH and SARAH SOUTH. JAMES EDWARD SOUTH was born December 1862 in TN, and died April 06, 1904 in Bristol, TN. He married his first wife MARY C. CRUMLEY October 16, 1881 in Sullivan County, TN. He married my great grandmother his second wife SARAH LOUVENA MOORE January 08, 1897 in Sullivan County, TN, daughter of FLOYD MOORE and JENNIE MOORE. James was run over by a train near Ash Street in Bristol Tennessee. He was a carpenter and may have been working at the railroad at the time. The story is that two trains were moving opposite directions. James stepped across as the first train cleared but did not see the second train. James was also a member of the JUNIOR ORDER OF UNITED AMERICAN MECHANICS. In "BRISTOL TENNESSEE/VIRGINIA A HISTORY - 1852-1900" by V.N. (Bud) Phillips, on page 145 is listed James E. South as a carpenter that during the 4th quarter of the 19th century helped build Bristol. 6/13/97 At the Sullivan County Clerks Office in Blountville, I found both marriage records. James E. South and Mary C. Crumley was recorded Oct. 16, 1881 and license was issued for James E. 6/14/97 I was at the Sullivan County Library in Blountville and found from the 1880 Census that James was a Farmhand living with L. G. Dryden and Eliza I. Dryden. He was age 18 in that census. Its possible he may have been orphaned and/or was living with neighbors or relatives. Sullivan County 1880 Census Index lists an Elizabeth Crumbey age 43 and Mary age 12 (351). This may be Mary Crumley because James South age 18 is listed in the Index at (356)? The number in parenthesis is the stamped page number on the original schedule. They would have lived near each other. Children of JAMES SOUTH and MARY CRUMLEY are: i. LAURA E. SOUTH, b. October 13, 1881, Sullivan County, TN. ii. SARAH SOUTH, b. April 1883, Sullivan County, TN. iii. KINNEY SOUTH, b. October 1887, Sullivan County, TN; d. April 18, 1910, Sullivan County, TN. I do not know what happened to Laura and Sarah. I do know that Kinney died in an institution. I found a 1905 news clipping that says "Kinney South is the name of an orphan boy at the poorhouse. He has fits, and is a pitiable object. His father who was killed on the railroad, was a member of the Junior Order. Some members of that order paid him a visit Sunday and manifested some interest in this poor, little unfortunate fellow. We hope they will not forget him." In the 1900 Census James was listed as a Carpenter. He and his wife Venie had been married 3 years. Children listed: Sarah 17, Kenni 12, Robert 2, Ollie born Feb 1900. 6/14/97 I was at the Sullivan County Library in Blountville and found from a 1905 news clipping that says "Kinney South is the name of an orphan boy at the poorhouse. We hope they will not forget him." 8/4/97 I found at the Sullivan County Library in Blountville a record of his death. It said his age was 20 and that he died from "fits" at the poor house, 5th District. Children of JAMES SOUTH and SARAH MOORE are: iv. ROBERT EDWARD SOUTH, b. December 24, 1897, Bristol, TN; d. January 1986, Kingsport, TN. v. OLLIE MAE SOUTH, b. February 02, 1900; d. Unknown. vi. HUBERT L. SOUTH, b. October 21, 1902, Bristol, TN; d. April 12, 1981, Bristol, VA. R. E.
