I found this to be interesting reading, and thought I would pass it on. The Danville and East Tennessee Railroad needed help financially and it would be to Bristol - Goodson, Va. advantage to assist, however, the town needed a population of at least 5,000 residents. ( population at the time not even close). On Dec. 16.1889, it was decided that a census should be taken, so the census counters went on a "people counting hunt" Visitors from N. Y. were counted, people who had gotten off the train to have lunch in town were counted, people from close surrounding areas were counted, and later even accusations that a few East Hill Cemetery residents had their citizenship's renewed. If you were people and in town or close to town you were counted as a citizen of the town. On Jan. 4.1890 the census result was 5,382 citizens in Bristol. The "real count was closer to 2,902. This honest count was taken and sent to Richmond, but found in a census taker's drawer some 10 years later. A judge refused to rule on the census, but the suit pointed out almost certainly that a city status and incorporation had been obtained by fraud. Ten years later in 1900 the population was still short of 5,000 people by about 500 people. Source: Bristol,Tennesse / Virginia by Bud Phillips. I received this book as an early Christmas present and will do lookup of names mentioned on request, but the book is mainly history of the town and its' early and prominate people so you need to have an old family name in the town to be mentioned.

I am looking for the birth family of Margaret Yoakley, b. @1775 married Charles Hilton (Helton). Their children were John b. @1801, James Andrew b. 1813, Joseph, and George b. @1819. I suspect that she is connected to the Peter Yoakley family in some way, but haven't been able to determine how. Does anyone have a list of Peter Yoakley's siblings or any other information on the Yoakleys? Pat -- Patricia M. He was born in 1823 in "Indian Territory" (Tennessee). His father must have died within the timeframe of 1823-1832, as his mother, Nancy, married John Giesler, Sr. in 1833 in Carter County, Tennessee and the family later moved to Missouri and was listed in the 1840 Maries County census. I believe John Berry probably had several siblings, but the only one I am aware of is Margaret. I believe these two were the youngest of the children. Their mother, Nancy, was born in 1796. (I was given this date by a descendent of John Giesler). I don't know Nancy's maiden name or her place of birth. Family research indicates that she had a granddaughter, Jeanetta Cross, living with her in Missouri. We have a copy of a letter to Nancy Giesler from a David BARRY (notice change in spelling), who signed the letter, "Your brother until death". If anyone has any information at all on this family, I would appreciate it so much. John Berry has been our brick wall! Thank you. Faye Berry Adkins

Are there any Phelps researchers in Sullivan County? My gr gr grandmother, Jennie Moore, married W. Sam Phelps. Sam Phelps was her second husband. My gr grandmother Venie Moore was half sister to Rob Phelps son of Sam and Jennie. Any info on this Phelps connection would be appreciated. Descendants of W. Sam Phelps Generation No. 1 1. W. SAM1 PHELPS was born 1859, and died 1931. He married MARY JANE MOORE December 06, 1883 in Sullivan County, TN, daughter of ALLEN MOORE and MARY MARTIN. She was born July 20, 1854 in Washington County, VA, and died 1931 in Bristol, Sullivan County, TN. Notes for MARY JANE MOORE: In the South and the Carrier families the story of Jennie Moore was that Venie and Ed were born out of wedlock and took their mother's name Moore. It was said that Jennie came from Saltville, VA. According to Jack Cross, who Louella Burnette verifies that he is descended from our Ed Moore, she was a Jones and married Floyd Moore. Louella and I are still not convinced that Jennie is a Jones. Jennie is buried in Ordway Cemetery as "Jane Wife of Samuel Phelps 1857-1931". Her nickname Jennie probably came from Virginia or Jane since Jane was one of her names. Jack Cross has her name as Virginia Jones and I have her name as Jennie (Jane) Moore. The Marriage License of Edward Moore and Olliene (Olivene) Moore gave Ed's parents as Henry & Jennie Moore. I will list Jennie's name as Mary Jane Moore until I can prove otherwise. She may be the same Mary Jane Moore that is the daughter of Allen Moore and Mary Martin and I will list her as such until proof is found otherwise. I have found no son of Allen and Mary named Floyd and I will list Floyd as Floyd Henry Moore parents unknown until proof is found otherwise. Data I have found on Mary Jane Moore: At the Historical Society in the Courthouse on Thursday 12 August, 1999, I researched the births of all Moores that had Allen & Mary Moore as parents. I found Mary Jane Moore. I found in the "Deaths Washington County" a Susan Moore age 2 years 6 months died 16 December 1879, daughter of Floyd and Jane Moore. Susan was born and died in Mendota, VA. I have not heard of a Susan from family so I don't know if this is my Floyd and Jane Moore. It may be that she was forgotten over the many years. Marriage Notes for W. PHELPS and MARY MOORE: 6/13/97 Found W.S. Phelps and Jennie Moore licensed 6 Dec., 1883. Children of W. PHELPS and MARY MOORE are: i. CHARLES2 PHELPS, m. KATHY BABB. 2. ii. WILLIAM HENRY PHELPS. 3. iii. JOSEPH ROBERT PHELPS, SR., b. 1892; d. 1959. Generation No. 2 2. WILLIAM HENRY2 PHELPS (W. SAM1) He married ALICE K. SMITH July 02, 1906 in Sullivan County, TN. Marriage Notes for WILLIAM PHELPS and ALICE SMITH: 6/13/97 Found William H. Phelps and Alice K. Smith recorded 2 July, 1906. The bondsman was J.C. Cross. Child of WILLIAM PHELPS and ALICE SMITH is: 4. i. WILLIAM HENRY3 PHELPS, JR.. 3. JOSEPH ROBERT2 PHELPS, SR. (W. SAM1) was born 1892, and died 1959. He married JANINE BRASWELL. Notes for JOSEPH ROBERT PHELPS, SR.: Buried in Ordway Cemetary near his father and mother. Child of JOSEPH PHELPS and JANINE BRASWELL is: i. JOSEPH ROBERT3 PHELPS, JR., b. September 30, 1931, kingsport, Sullivan County, TN; m. SUE HICKES. Notes for JOSEPH ROBERT PHELPS, JR.: I got updated info on descendents of Sam Phelps from Rob Phelps Jr. Talked to him by phone from my Dad's house early 1997. Generation No. 3 4. WILLIAM HENRY3 PHELPS, JR. (WILLIAM HENRY2, W. SAM1) He married NOT KNOWN. Child of WILLIAM PHELPS and NOT KNOWN is: i. CHARLES4 PHELPS. Fredrick Thomas South Goose Creek, SC Born 30 October 1941, Dante, Russell County, VA Raised in Bristol, Sullivan County, TN Father is Robert Edward South, Jr. Born 1 August, 1920, Bristol, Sullivan County, TN Currently living on Broad Street, Bristol, TN
I am sending out a plea to anyone on these list with resourses in these Tenn. Counties to please look for the Canter name. If you have a book or a census record, or anything with information in these counties and have the time I plead for you to please see if there is a Canter listed in them. Any Canter name, any dates. These people are giving me fits! I think I have exhausted all the info available in Va. and need to concentrate on Tenn. and Ky. I know somewhere I will find a crumb of information to help break down a piece of a brick wall. If you find too much to type I will be happy to pay copy and postage fee, etc. but under the circumstances it seems doubtful that could happen, LOL.Many Thanks to all.

Margaret is the only PHIPPS I have right now - she is my 2G grandmother and has been a bit of a brick wall for several years. Just found out they [her and her husband] were in Dickson C,o. TN 1900 and was able to get the Jan 1855 birthdate from that. As I research this line, I will be sure to keep you in mind - when anyone asks for information that I don't have, I put it into a data base and check it every month in case I do come across it. I really do thank you for you time in looking this up for me.
