Tamera; There is an online tree at Ancestry for a Younger Phillip Herndon that I think is connected to Robert but he is not listed as a son. The 1850 census for Sarah: 1850 STEWART COUNTY, TENNESSEE, pg 787 194 Sarah HENDON 43 f w farmer Unk Nancy 23 f w Tenn Robert 17 m w Tenn James 15 m w Tenn George 13 m w Tenn William 12 f w Tenn Elender 7 m w Ky ..and the Stewart County Settlements and Bonds, Volume G 97 year's provisions for widow of Philip Herndon 98 sale of the estate of Philip Herndon; buyers include Lewis Herndon, Elizabeth Futrell, widow, Ben Herndon, R. Herndon; 5 Feb 1849 257 inventory of notes and accounts of the estate of P. Herndon (1850) 285 settlement with Benjamin Herndon, administrator of the estate of Phillip Herndon (insolvent); 1 Jun 1850 makes me think that if not that Phillip then another Phillip Herndon is his father. and then there was Stewart County Historical Society, Stewart County Tennessee Vol II 2000, pg 324 under Porter Herndon, that lists his grandparents as Louis (b 1824) and Mary Futrell Herndon. Louis was the son of Phillip and Sarah Hitchcock Herndon. I hope this helps.
