    3. Hi, Sandy, Hey, we genealogists live in the past, anyway, right? For a moment, you got to re-visit your own past. I'm glad I could bring back some pleasant memories. Marcia

Marcia/Sandy, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but doing a bit of quick research today during lunch has turned up an irregularity that concerns me about Samuel SHEPHERD. I'm going to request some documents from the DAR and do some more research, but here's what I have so far. Here's what Marcia originally quoted, for reference: > "I also found info on Samuel Shepherd in "Roster of Soldiers and > Patriots of the Am. Revolution Buried in Tenn" - by Tn. NSDAR. > > "page---157:---Samuel Shepherd (b: 9-28-1763 Middlesex Co. Va/d 1838 > Montgomery Co. Tn.) Pvt. from Orange Co. N.C. for 9 mos, Pen. No. > S-21476 Nat'l Archives; m. 8-14-1784 Orange Co.N.C. to Elizabeth S. > Meacham b/NC d: 1843-50 Montgomery Co. Tn. Ch: Spencer Thornsberry b. > 1-16-1806 NC d 5-21-1897 bur on Ft. Campbell ground in what is now > Stewart Co. Tn. Private marker, m. 1st Mallsey Ann Perry d 1843; m 2nd > Frances Yarborough in 1843 - -- Nancy was living in 1838; Sally m. > Samuel Lee; Michel b 1799 m. Josiah Smith; Robert b: 1797 m. Ann > _______; Lewis b 1814-1815; dau m. ______Marable. Ref: DAR # > 571485." In the book "Twenty-Four Hundred Tennessee Pensioners, Revolution -- War of 1812", Compiled by Zella Armstrong, 1937, There is only one Samuel Shepherd listed. He was 72 in 1832, served in Virginia, but drew his pension in Wilson County. It also says that he was in the 1840 Census So the birth and death don't quite match up and the county is wrong. In the book "Tennessee Wills and Administrations 1779-1861" by byron and Barbara Sistler, 1990, it shows three Samuel Shepherds: One died in Wilson County in 1837 (Will Book 149), a second died in Wilson County in 1848 (Will Book 162), and a third died in Montgomery County in 1838 (Record Book H 64). So, it looks from this information like the Revolutionary War soldier was the Samuel Shepherd who died in Wilson County in 1848, *NOT* the one who died in Montgomery County in 1838, and the latter seems to be OUR Samuel Shepherd. I'm going to ask a relative in Montgomery County to get a copy of that will for me. I think that may help clear things up a bit. I hope I'm wrong, but I'll let you know as I learn more. _\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_ | Roger L. 3. Roger, It's not raining just yet. I have a copy of "our" Samuel Shepherd's pension application and a copy of the document granting the pension (a whopping $30). It was he who died in Montgomery County in 1838. I think my copy of the application is a copy of a copy of a copy, so it is really terrible, or I would scan it and send it to you. But maybe it will help you (mentally, anyway) to know the documents for which you are searching do really exist. The transcript provided by Eleanor Williams and quoted in Sandy's e-mail is almost a necessity, as the handwriting is absolutely awful. I have a copy of Samuel's will also, and it is frustrating as it only mentions by name his wife and his two (at the time) unmarried daughters. Our ancestors surely did not make it easy for us, did they? Hang in there. Marcia
