    1. More Smith Information
    2. Roger L. Smith
    3. I've found some pretty exciting new information on my Stewart County Smiths over the last few weeks and decided it was time to share some of it here. This is a pretty long email, but if you're interested in Smiths, I hope you'll find something useful in it. You may remember my recent queries about Spencer Smith, Henry Smith, Josiah Smith, etc. There has been a bit of consensus that Josiah Smith was the father of Henry Smith, but no proof. I now have proof. Henry Smith died in Stewart County in 1909. In Stewart County Deed Book 61 pages 401-405 are two transactions among the heirs of Henry Smith, the second listing his heirs as: Cordelia Smith and husband Jno. W. Smith, Josiah S. Smith and wife, Tennessee, Mollie Smith, Zoe Abney and husband, H.W. Abney, Eva Green adn husband, C.M. Green, and W.H. Smith and wife, Daisy, Fannie Barbee, and Hanibal Smith. In the second transaction, most of the siblings are giving their part of their father's land to brother Hanibal, and in return he will take care of his widowed mother, spinster sister, and widowed sister. Transcriptions are available at: http://www.ramawam.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I2639&tree=roger (I'll happily donate the transcriptions to the website if anyone wants them). Then, in the 1910 Stewart County Census, we find the following: 323/323 Smith, Hanal head m w 31 single Jane mother f w 72 widowed (10 children, 10 surviving) Mollie sister f w 47 single Barbee, Francis sister f w 39 widowed (1 child, 1 surviving) John N. nephew m w 17 single Smith, Spencer uncle m w 84 widowed So, here is Hanibal with his mother, sisters, and ...uncle Spencer Smith. Since Hanibal Smith is Henry Smith's son, Spencer Smith is Henry Smith's brother. Spencer Smith died in Stewart County in 1914. I ordered a copy of his death certificate from the TSLA: http://www.ramawam.com/genealogy/histories/SpencerSmith_DeathCert.jpg It lists his father as Josiah Smith and his mother as Bettie Shepard, and was attested by Han Smith! So Josiah Smith was indeed the father of Henry Smith, and I can add another step in my paternal line! In researching all of this, I've been poring through Stewart County Census records pretty heavily. ALthough I haven't done all of the work that I eventually hope to in this area, I've added a fair number of Smiths to my database. All of this is available on the web at: http://www.ramawam.com/genealogy or you can start at Josiah Smith and work your way down at: http://www.ramawam.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I4153&tree=roger I really hope that this helps fill in some gaps for someone else. The Stewart County Smiths have been a tough nut to crack. I hope to now work my way through the Censuses down from Josiah Smith and see how many I can tie together. If anyone is working on any of this, I'd love to hear from you, especially if you have any information on Josiah Smith. _\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_ | Roger L.
