Roger, Do you have any idea why Henry's eldest child, James Valentine Smith, was not among the heirs who were listed in the division of his property after his death? Hi Marcia, Yes, if you'll look again at the transcriptions, J.V. Smith and wife Izora, and M.W. Smith and wife Nancy W. Smith are listed in the first deed as selling their land to Hanibal for $100. Do you have any documentation that lists her name as "Michael" other than the 1850 Census? In Spencer Smith's death certificate, her name is listed as "Bettie", which is usually a nickname for Elizabeth.
