Date of Newspaper: Thursday, November 2, 1944 Page: Front Page Title: "Soldier Held As War Prisoner Writes Parents" A letter written in his own script was the first direct news Mr. and Mrs. W.C. McCormack have received from their son , Pvt. John McCormack, a German prisoner of war interned at Stalag. The letter arrived last week along with the usual prisoner of war card bearing his own signature. Reported missing in Italy last May , Pvt. McCormack was later heard to broadcast over a Berlin station and the family received numerous letters from listeners concerning the broadcast. The War Department notified the family and officially established his status as a prisoner. The letter dated Monday, July 3 and the card May 18, came just a few days after his 20th birthday. Following is the letter: "I will drop you a few lines after so long I am just as well as can be expected. I guess you know by now that I am a prisoner of the Germans. Tell Roxie and Mary I would write to them but they know I am doing OK and I hope it will not be long until I see all. I still think of you in my prayers a! nd I hope you think of me in yours. Mother, if you see Ann, tell her hello for me and I'll be back soon to see her. You can send me some cigarettes and candy if you wish. I will be glad to get them. Don't worry about me because I am OK. God Bless you all till I see you. Your loving son. John" Anyone interested in a copy of the original article please contact me at kaitysmom@peoplestel.net for details. In Christ, Melissa Barker
I have a Mary McCormack that married Bracy E. Majors. Does anyone know if this Mary he mentions in his letter is the same one? Is this Mary a sister?
