Here's a Vickers family update, which will be of interest to those researching the Vickers, Atkins, Cathey and McGee families in Stewart County. James Vickers appears in Stewart County as early as the 1820 census, and no later than 1828. From 1830 on, we only see the families of Michael M. Vickers (1802/1866) and George W. Vickers (1808/1870's) in Stewart County. Daughters of Michael M. Vickers married into the Atkins, Cathey and McGee families of Stewart County. James Vickers arrived in Hamilton County, Illinois about 1829, and died there on 20 May 1840. His will, written 23 April 1840, names wife Elizabeth Vickers, daughter Rachael Mahalia Vickers and granddaughter Elizabeth Jemimah Allen. Also appearing in Hamilton County at the same time was the family of Phoebe Vickers, who married about 1825 in Stewart County to Jeremiah T. F. Lewis (born 1807 in Stewart County). After his death, James Vicker's widow Elizabeth filed an application for a Revolutionary War pension, citing James' service in the War. The pension application (numbered R 10939) was ultimately rejected based on lack of sufficient proof of military service, but contains valuable genealogical information: James Vickers' first wife was Polly Johnson. Their eldest child, John Vickers, was born in 1784. James married for a second time, on 18 October 1799 in Sevier County, Tennessee, to Elizabeth Mowery, who was born 1 September 1782. The name Michael Mowery appears in the names of the descendants of Michael M. Vickers of Stewart County. Michael M. Vickers is of an age to be the eldest son of James Vickers and Elizabeth (Mowery) Vickers. I am convinced that James and Elizabeth (Mowery) Vickers of Sevier County, TN were in Stewart County before moving to Illinois, and are the ancestors of the Vickers families of Stewart County. Jim
