My Futrell connection comes from Rhoda Futrell who married Enos Outland. The line I have from there is: Rhoda Futrell was daughter of Joel Futrell and Elizabeth ? in North Carolina Joel Futrell was son of John Futrell and Martha Daughtrey (some controversy over Martha) John Futrell was the son of Thomas Futrell #2 and Ann ?? Thomas Futrell #2 was son of Thomas Futrell #1 and Gillian Jarrell and I've not gone further back than that. This Thomas Futrell is listed in Hotten's Book of Immigrants, p. 502, and his son was born in Chetton, Shropshire, England, or so my records say. Do you agree with these? Do you have more? For John 1715-1788, I have children Daniel, John, Charity, Jehew, Thomas, Ephraim, Phereby, Joel, Martha, and Lawrence. I have spouses for Charity (Joseph Lassiter), Thomas (Sarah Biddle), Joel (Elizabeth?), and Lawrence (Amy Odom) John left a will in Northampton County, NC in 1786, naming these children. He named his wife as Martha, but there are those who dispute that she was Martha Daugherty. It seems that Martha Daughtrey had a sister named Mary. Her father was Joshua Daughtrey. In Joshua Daughtrey's will, he named Mary as the wife of some other man and then named her as the wife of John Futrell. So there is controversy about it. Since John's wife was definitely named Martha, from other records, I agree with those who think her to be the daughter of Joshua Daugherty, and that Joshua made a slip when he called her Mary. Take your own pick. I have John's father as Thomas Futrell (about 1659-1739), and his wife was Ann, but I don't have a surname for her. I have children Thomas J., Benjamin, John, and Joseph. I have Thomas J. married to Hannah ??, Benjamin married to Mourning ??, and John married to Martha Daughtrey as above. Betty Sellers told me that Thomas was b. in 1659 in Chetton, Shropshire, England. I have Thomas' father as another Thomas Futrell (Fewtrell), married to Gillian Jarrell. From Hotten's IMMIGRANTS, P. 502, Thomas Futer (sic) is listed as a land owner in the parish of St. James, as taken by the church wardens of the parish on 20 Dec. 1679. Thomas Futrell is first mentioned in Virginia as a taxpayer in 1678 in Surrey County.. At that time he was a resident of Lawnes Creek Parish. He was not listed on the tax rolls before 1678 nor after 1688. His date of death is established by the fact that his widow, Gilian Futrell, presented an inventory of his estate on 28 April, 1693. (Surry Co., Va Deeds, Wills, Etc., No. 4, 1687-1694, reel 2, pp. 279b, 302b, and 303a, as quoted in THE FUTRELL FAMILY IN AMERICA, p.3) WILLS AND ADMINISTRATIONS OF SURRY COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1671-1750, by Eliza Timberlake Davis, Gen. Pub. Co., Baltimore, MD 1980 lists the will of Thomas Futrell who died leaving an estate, and Gilian Futerell, his Relict, asks for Com. of admr. be granted to her. Granted. 29 Apr., 1693.
