    3. Cathy, Hogans, you say? Now you've hit one of my lines! I'm descended from William Hogan, son of Edmond and brother of John H. I'm afraid that I don't have the proof you're looking for, but I do have a couple of questions and an observation: - Are you sure that Martha is the daughter of John H. Hogan? In the 1830 census, when Martha was 12, she should have been listed in John H.'s household, but he had no daughters listed who were aged 10-15. There is a spot for her in his 1820 household, and by 1840 she's married and in her own house. - Have you considered the possibility that the Martha R. Hogan listed in Edmond's 1838 will is your Martha? There is an 1842 marriage in Henry Co. for a Martha E. Hogan, which could be Edmond's named daughter instead, but he calls her Martha R. in his will, not Martha E. - You mention not having found the marriage record for Martha and Tillman Russell in Stewart Co. That is probably because the marriages for 1840 are sparse. I think something must have happened to the originals by the time that the book was transcribed in 1937 by the WPA. Unfortunately, the originals don't survive for us to confirm. Nevertheless, that marriage record would not have proven anything for you, since it would have only listed the couples' name and marriage date, not who her father was. I've scoured my notes and the county records and don't find any clues that would tie Martha to John H. The only other possibility I can think of it to trace the land that Tillman and Martha were living on at the time of the 1840 census (months after their wedding). If that land traced back to John H. Hogan, that could be the proof you need. Hope this helps, Jim -----Original Message----- From: tnstewar-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tnstewar-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Cathy Sent: Monday, October 12, 2009 12:52 PM To: TNSTEWAR@rootsweb.com Subject: [TNSTEWAR] Hogan, Russell I am ready to apply to the DAR but I have one weak link. I need documentation that Martha HOGAN, b 14 Sep 1818 in Stewart Co. TN, d 30 Aug 1873, Ill, is the daughter of John H HOGAN, b 18 Apr 1791, Stewart Co.TN, d 15 Mar 1844, Stewart Co, TN and Nancy MCGREGOR, b 2 Feb 1791, Stewart Co. TN, d 15 Feb 1855, Stewart Co. TN. Martha HOGAN married Tillman Gates RUSSELL (b. 2 Feb 1812 NC, d.23 Mar 1856, Williamson Co. Ill) on 18 Feb 1840, Stewart Co., TN per family records but I have been unable to find the actual marriage record or a will for John H. HOGAN that may list her as an heir. Other children of John and Nancy HOGAN are: William C. b. 1817; Bartlet b. 1820; Edmund H. b. 1821; Jemima b. 1825; Lucy R. b. 1827; Eli Alexander b. 1830; John McGregor b. 1832. I have the information from old family handwritten pages, supposedly written by Martha (HOGAN) RUSSELL, but it is not dated or signed by her and probably will not be acceptable. John H HOGAN is the son of Edmund HOGAN, b 17 Jun 1762, d 22 Feb 1838 in Henry Co., TN. I have his pension record and will, naming John H as one of his sons. And I have documentation of Tillman and Martha's son Christopher Marion RUSSELL's birth, marriage, Civil War records and death. I just don't have what I need to link Martha to John H. Thank you for any and all help. 3. Jim, Do you have the ancestry of Edmond Hogan (born 17 Jun 1762)? I wonder if he is related to the 2 Hogans (Humphrey and Daniel) who signed the Cumberland Compact in Nashville in 1780? One of them is MY presumed ancestor-in-law (LOL) since Daniel Hogan married the widow (Elizabeth) of James Herrod after he was killed by Indians. They lived in Davidson County. James Herrod was known to have 4 sons and a daughter Jenny (Jane?). Two of the sons (James and Thomas) moved to Stewart County near the Parchmans on Guice's Creek. I say presumed above since I've never been able to confirm the family legend that the first wife of John Parchman (early immigrant to Stewart County) was Nancy Herrod, presumably the daughter of James Herrod.
