Gerry, Regarding Humphrey and Daniel Hogan - I asked Cleo Hogan, longtime Hogan researcher from Clarksville, and quite the Hogan DNA knowledge-base. Cleo pointed me to the Hogan DNA Project website at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/hogan/results On that page, Edmond Hogan (b. 1762) is shown as "H-10", in the "R Lineage #2" section, coded blue. Also in that same section is William Hogan (ca. 1777), coded "H-9". Descendants of this William Hogan are almost positive that he is the son of Humphrey Hogan. All of this means, I think, that Edmond and Humphrey were indeed related, but no one has yet proven who their common male ancestor is. That common ancestor could be as much as 400 years prior to Edmond and Humphrey. I have not proven the following, but here's what I have in my notes on the ancestry of Edmond: Edmond Hogan (b 1762 VA, d 1838 TN) James Hogan (b 1728 VA, d 1793 NC) William Griffin Hogan (b ca. 1705 VA, d 1783 NC) William Hogan (b ca. 1680 VA, d c. 1754 VA) William Hogan (b ca. 1660 VA, d 1734 VA) Hope this helps, Jim -----Original Message----- From: tnstewar-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tnstewar-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Gerry Parchman Sent: Tuesday, October 13, 2009 9:21 AM To: tnstewar@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNSTEWAR] Hogan, Russell Jim, Do you have the ancestry of Edmond Hogan (born 17 Jun 1762)? I wonder if he is related to the 2 Hogans (Humphrey and Daniel) who signed the Cumberland Compact in Nashville in 1780? One of them is MY presumed ancestor-in-law (LOL) since Daniel Hogan married the widow (Elizabeth) of James Herrod after he was killed by Indians. They lived in Davidson County. James Herrod was known to have 4 sons and a daughter Jenny (Jane?). Two of the sons (James and Thomas) moved to Stewart County near the Parchmans on Guice's Creek. I say presumed above since I've never been able to confirm the family legend that the first wife of John Parchman (early immigrant to Stewart County) was Nancy Herrod, presumably the daughter of James Herrod. Thanks Jim for that Hogan DNA site. Since Daniel belongs to the R Lineage #1, he is probably not a close relative of Humphrey, if Edmond is the son of Humphrey. I know that Humphrey was associated with the Long Hunters who spent months to years away from home in the Kentucky wilderness hunting in the mid 1700s. I also found a reference that Daniel Hogan had only one son, John. I don't know if that was by a previous wife or by the widow, Elizabeth Herrod. The log cabin built in the Nashville area by Daniel Hogan is still occupied by Mike Cunningham, a descendant who lives there according to his comments on genforum in 2001. He had seen copies of Bible records and noted that the Bell-Hogan papers are on file with the Hogan Family Papers in the Manuscript section of the Tennessee State Library. He says that claims are made that Daniel came to America in about 1863 at the age of 30. I think Humphrey was already in Kentucky by that time. Gerry Parchman
Sorry, I made a typo. Daniel Hogan immigrated to America in 1763, not 1863, according to one message board posting. Gerry Parchman
