Hi all, I have been going through Stewart County censuses once again trying to figure out where my g-g grandmother, Mary Ann Dunaway, might fit in on the Stewart County scene... She would have been born in 1861 - and by age 19, when she first shows up on a census, was married to Henry Clay Green and raising their own 5 month old baby as well as four younger siblings of Henry's (which leads to another question - what happened to Henry's parents and older brothers and sisters between 1870 and 1880, that as a 19 year old he'd be raising all the young ones with his new wife; I found that his dad died of pneumonia in April 1880, but nothing on any of the other family members?). Married at that age, I assume she was from/living in the area (could be wrong about that) - and in addition, the family are all indicated as farmers, but I have letters written by Mary Ann to my great-grandfather which show beautiful penmanship and what I'd think was a pretty high level of literacy for a woman at that time and place. Does anyone know how normal it would have been for a girl growing up in the 1860s and 1870s in Stewart County to receive a good education? I have found two possibilities for her father - one Madison (also called M or Mattison in various censuses) would be around the right age, but no child the right age to fit with Mary Ann shows up on any census where he appears, so don't think it's him. The other possibility would be his father, William, who shows up on the 1860 census with a wife Betsy and six children. The frustrating bit is that as Mary Ann would have been born in 1861 she obviously doesn't appear and the family does not appear at all (with the exception of Madison) on the 1870 census - and seem to disappear after that. William and his wife would have been 41 at the time of Mary Ann's birth, and they do have a four year old in 1860, so it's not outside the realm of possibility. These Dunaways were all registered at living in Rough and Ready Furnace. There are a couple more Dunaway families in the 1850 census but they don't fit at all with William and Madision who are among the few who are left from 1860 on... Just wondered if anyone else had any information on these Dunaways - or could shed some light on my questions. Thanks so much - I am trying to put together a book with the stories of all of her great (and multiples of great) grandmothers for my little niece - which is partly why I have been reinspired to search for more information about Mary Ann.
