Hi Doris, My Knight line descends from John Knight who m. Nancy Francis. A few years ago we joined the Knight DNA Project at World Families and just finally got a match to the line of Night Knight, Revolutionary War soldier from SC who lived in Christian Co, Ky before moving to Brown Co, Il. There was a Richard Knight who m. Elizabeth Francis, sister of Nancy Francis. This has made me wonder if my John Knight was brother to that Richard Knight. Richard Knight was living with the Francis family in Trigg Co, right next door to the Richard "Night" family (Richard Night was old enough to be Richard's father). Are either of these the Richard Knight to whom you are related? A descendant of Richard Knight who m. Elizabeth Knight believes the younger Richard was a son of Grant Knight, son of James Knight, Revolutionary War soldier from SC. I don't know if this James Knight was related to Night Knight. We have a DNA project member who believes their line descends from Aquilla Knight. My line is not a match for that line. We also have a descendant of Wade Hampton Knight whose line lived in Christian Co, Humphreys Co, and Houston Co represented in the project. We are looking for descendants of Absalom Knight's line, Aquilla Knight's line, and Richard Knight's line to participate as well as any other Knight lines from the region. If anyone knows of a Knight descendant from the area who might be willing to participate, please let me know or check out the Knight DNA Project at WorldFamilies.net. Also, a couple of researchers are trying to trace their lines back to Aquilla Knight. They are descended from Celdon E. Knight and Barrie Knight, both thought to be descendants of Aquilla Knight. I should probably make this a separate post but, technically, I can get away with it since you mentioned Aquilla Knight in your original post ;) Any documented descendants of these out there who are willing to participate?? Thanks, Jeanette Knight Ahrens ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ From: Doris Pulley <shemwell11251@sbcglobal.net> To: tnstewar@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, November 1, 2009 10:02:05 AM Subject: Knights Hi guys! Hi all, I have been going through Stewart County censuses once again trying to figure out where my g-g grandmother, Mary Ann Dunaway, might fit in on the Stewart County scene... She would have been born in 1861 - and by age 19, when she first shows up on a census, was married to Henry Clay Green and raising their own 5 month old baby as well as four younger siblings of Henry's (which leads to another question - what happened to Henry's parents and older brothers and sisters between 1870 and 1880, that as a 19 year old he'd be raising all the young ones with his new wife; I found that his dad died of pneumonia in April 1880, but nothing on any of the other family members?). Married at that age, I assume she was from/living in the area (could be wrong about that) - and in addition, the family are all indicated as farmers, but I have letters written by Mary Ann to my great-grandfather which show beautiful penmanship and what I'd think was a pretty high level of literacy for a woman at that time and place. Does anyone know how normal it would have been for a girl growing up in the 1860s and 1870s in Stewart County to receive a good education? I have found two possibilities for her father - one Madison (also called M or Mattison in various censuses) would be around the right age, but no child the right age to fit with Mary Ann shows up on any census where he appears, so don't think it's him. The other possibility would be his father, William, who shows up on the 1860 census with a wife Betsy and six children. The frustrating bit is that as Mary Ann would have been born in 1861 she obviously doesn't appear and the family does not appear at all (with the exception of Madison) on the 1870 census - and seem to disappear after that. William and his wife would have been 41 at the time of Mary Ann's birth, and they do have a four year old in 1860, so it's not outside the realm of possibility. These Dunaways were all registered at living in Rough and Ready Furnace. There are a couple more Dunaway families in the 1850 census but they don't fit at all with William and Madision who are among the few who are left from 1860 on... Just wondered if anyone else had any information on these Dunaways - or could shed some light on my questions. Thanks so much - I am trying to put together a book with the stories of all of her great (and multiples of great) grandmothers for my little niece - which is partly why I have been reinspired to search for more information about Mary Ann. David, I am out in our RV on a road trip without my generalogy data. When I return, I will see what I can find for you. However, I am at a brick wall with my Wyatt Tuggle, so I doubt that I will have anything new for you. I do have a Gully Moore in my tree that is also a brick wall. Does that name ring a bell with you? He came from South Carolina, served with Francis Marion, moved to Middle TN and died around 1825. One of his daughters, Betsy, married Thomas Lankford. I'll write back in a couple of weeks. I'm looking for the parents of Rachel Rebecca Bruce, born 18 Sept 1826 in Alabama and died 6 April 1893 in Stewart Co, TN. On 2 May 1847 she married Isaac Edwards in Montgomery Co, TN. There’s a very good chance that Rachel’s father was Joel Bruce. Rachel was born in Alabama, and in the 1830 census, there was only one Bruce in Alabama with a daughter the right age to be Rachel. He was in the Lauderdale, AL census. In the 1840 census, Joel Bruce was in Mongomery, TN and had a daughter the right age to be Rachel. However, this is all circumstantial, and I would like documentation to either support or refute my theory. Thank you. Linda Hughes

Chorely....NOT! from the Sunday Afternoon Rocking Series Jan Philpot One has to be from the south to truly appreciate that title. It is a play on the southern expression "Shorely not"...or in more appropriate grammer, "surely not". But Chorely....NOT! is exactly what I mean. I have not had much luck with chores. I grew up hearing my parents speak of their childhood chores. My father worked the fields, slopped the hogs, all that farm business you hear from the oldtimers. Add to that, once his mother became bedridden when he was in his teens, being the only child left at home, he took over the household chores (without modern conveniences like electricity and running water) and also cooked for the farm hands using a *gasp* iron woodstove. My mother apparently fixed meals for her family as soon as she was old enough to reach a stove. That being the case, and my upbringing definitely being southern with a Victorian twist, one would expect me to be loaded down with chores. Chorely...NOT! My dad knew his way around a kitchen as well as my mother, and either that arrived home from work first had supper (a real one) on the table precisely at 5:00 PM and I was to stay out of the way. Nor was I to clean up afterward. I was to hit the books and do homework perfectly. Saturdays were my only day for "chores". I was to straighten and clean the house. Thing was, my parents were so organized, right down to the color-coded closets, that there was little to do in that department except swish a dust cloth around and run a vacuum. The only chore I remember that was a "bear" would be that of grass trimming around the house...with clippers the old-fashioned way because whoever heard of a weed eater in those days? Now that could get hot and tiresome, but since I was asked to do very little and "because I said so" was the parental rule about all things, I did not complain. My father's notion was that I was to be a doctor or lawyer and marry a senator. Therefore, my "chore" was to be a perfect student. Consequently I grew up knowing how to do next to nothing around the house and had to learn after I got out on my own. Needless to say, I did not become a doctor or lawyer. I became a teacher and artist with pay commiserate with the same. And I most DEFINITELY did not marry a senator...about the opposite end of the spectrum, actually. I decided my children would grow up with chores. I listed them weekly and attached them to the refrigerator. And did that work? CHORELY NOT. Oh ...the boys attempted. And I walked into the kitchen one day to find myself ankle deep in bubbles extending from one wall to the other. My son had loaded the dishwasher with dishwashing liquid all right. I checked the mowing only to realize my stepson had mowed down three apple trees just planted that week. He "didn't see them". I checked the landscaping only to discover the boys had "weeded" my mums. Sigh. More luck with the girls, right? Nada. I only thought so at the time. Once they were grown, my older daughter, in a giggling fit one day, told me how their room got cleaned. She would yawn and stretch and say, "Oh, I wish a little elf would come in my sleep and clean my room like magic!" She would pretend to nap and her little sister would clean that room spic and span to create the illusion that an elf had come! Now was that a dirty trick, or what??? I finally found out why, abruptly in preteen years, the nicely organized room became a disaster. Had nothing do do with any growing pains other than little sister had finally caught on and stubbed up. CHORELY NOT! I think I have finally figured out the way to get chores done. My four year old granddaughter LOVES to come to Nana's and do chores. I think it has something to do with the idea of doing everything together. If Nana cooks, Serenity can't wait to have a bowl of something to stir. If the flower beds need watering, Nana holds the can gently on the bottom and Serenity tips it, and "WE did it, Nana!" If we clean her room at Nana's house, we clean it together and sing a little clean up song while we do it. Last time she was here, she and I unloaded a trailerload of mulch, me with my big shovel and bucket, and her with a little bowl. She squealed, "OH! I want to stay here forever, Nana!" Imagine that. Chorely I have finally figured out the "Chore Score"...CHORELY...YES! The family mysteries keep us perplexed, don't they. I located a Myers Cemetery once in Clarksville and thought I might have found a jackpot. Of all the names listed, only one Myers was listed in the Cemetery named Myers Cemetery and I never found a connection to him. We'll just keep hunting. I all most certain it is the Bomar Hill cemetery as I have a 1926 map of the area and the deed calls looks as if it would encompass the Bomar Hill cemetery. Also have the TVA cemetery relocation project list and it calls the Bomar Hill cemetery Scaraborough cemetery. What is funny the TVA list contains no Vorners (Varners) or Scaraboroughs buried in the cemetery. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to TNSTEWAR-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
