If you have not yet had an opportunity to hear John Baker, you will not want to miss this. MONTGOMERY COUNTY ARCHIVES to Host Workshop on AFRICAN AMERICAN GENEALOGY presented by author JOHN F. BAKER Award-winning author John F. Baker, Jr., will present a workshop on African American genealogy as told through his own genealogical research which produced his recently published book, The Washingtons of Wessyngton Plantation: Stories of My Family's Journey to Freedom. The workshop will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Montgomery County Civic Hall, located at 350 Pageant Lane, Clarksville. The workshop is free and open to the public. Please see below for reservation information. Baker discovered the story of his ancestors quite by accident when he saw a photograph of four former slaves, entitled "Black Tennesseans," in a seventh grade social studies book. Later he learned that two of them were his grandmother's grandparents. Baker has lived his entire life just a few miles from Wessyngton Plantation in a town populated by hundreds of descendants of its former slaves. For more than thirty years, he has been researching, conducting interviews, and collecting photographs and information about them and the hundreds of others enslaved on the plantation. Baker has written extensively on Wessyngton and the lives of African Americans there. The National Historical Home submission, Families and Cabins: Archaeological and Historical Investigations at Wessyngton Plantation included his paper, which earned him a national history award from the American Association for State and Local History. Those wishing to attend the workshop must contact Montgomery County Archives to reserve a seat as the number of attendees is limited. Reservations can be made via e-mail to mcarchives@montgomerycountytn.org<mailto:mcarchives@montgomerycountytn.org> Patrons can also register by telephone by calling 931.553.5159. Parking is available at Veterans' Plaza.
Hi Rita, Hope the information helped. I was questioning the date of Nancy's birth as she was much older than Alex Outland. I talked to Nancy's granddaughter Dorthy (Dottie)Outland Benoit whose father was William George Outland son of Nancy Austin and Alex Outland and brother to Rosa Outland Knight. She confirmed that Nancy was much older and also that Nancy's picture did hang over the bed of Alex Outland and Alice Crutcher throughout their marriage. Dottie lives in Murray, Kentucky. The picture of Nancy Austin Outland is in the hands of a GG granddaughter (Debbie Bowenman) in Manassas, VA. Do you have any information on Francis Marion Knight? He is buried in the Bailey-Byrd Cemetery in Stewart County. He was a Civil War Vet Co D 14th TN INF,CSA, Moved from Cem. #116, grave 60. I'm a Shemwell, Dan. Pulley is my married name. I can't recall any Arthur Pulley and since it's late I will look up the Pulley tree tomorrow after work. Now if you would have said Archie Pulley that's my husband's Uncle. I'm sure we will find an Arthur in there some where. ............My husbands line came from Elisha but I do see an Arthur stemming down from the Hampton branch. His father was Rufus born in 1853. His siblings were Luthur, Thomas Sidney, and Herman.....Thank you Dan ________________________________ From: Sylvia Outland <outland@go-concepts.com> To: tnstewar@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, February 17, 2010 8:10:49 PM Subject: Re: [TNSTEWAR] Jewel Knight Doris, Are you any relation to Arthur Pulley? Alex Dosey Outland married Nancy J. Austin. Who were the parents of Nancy J. Austin? Quintis Knight married Mollie Burns. Do you have Mollie Burns Knight's date and place of death? Who were her parents? Dan Outland
Hi Doris & Rita, Just saw your e-mail on Jewel Eilleen Knight born 12/8/1920 in Stewart County, TN. Rosa Outland Knight died in Child birth with Jewel.Rosa was indeed the daughter of Alex Outland and Nancy Austin along with an older son William George Outland. Rosa was first raised by Alex Dosey Outland and Nancy Austin Outland. Nancy was the first wife for Alex and she was born 11/29/1877 and died 10/7/1907. Nancy and Alex were married 10/1/1899. Rosa was mostly raised by Alex's second wife Alice Crutcher born 11/29/1879 and died 4/20/1979. They were married June 10, 1910. Alex and Alice also raised Jewell as Rudy Leland Knight had moved to Colorado. He came to take Jewel back with him but Uncle Alex would not let him take her. Alex was an older brother to my grandfather Jordan Henry Outland who first married Rudy's sister Nina Knight. She died in 1923 and Jordan then married Nina's cousin Gertrude Knight (My Grandmother) in November 1924. Rudy was the son of Quintis Knight and Mollie Burns. My Grandmother(Gertrude) was the daughter of John R. Knight (older brother to Quintis) and Louella Smith. Jewel Knight is still living and I talk to her about every three months. She is 89. According to Jewel and other older relatives Uncle Alex kept the picture of his first wife Nancy Austin hanging over the bed he shared with Alice Crutcher for their entire marriage. Rudy Leland Knight wad born 3/21/1899 and died 12/6/1963 in Colorado. He was the 1960-61 Coloradao fiddle champion. I have a lot of information on the Outland's and quite a bit on the Knight's.
