No, please don't stop. I'm enjoying reading the articles. I got a big kick out of the one about the hog. :) Someone can always use the delete button if they don't want to read it. I'm just concerned about all the trouble you are going through to put it on line. It is appreciated! Paulette
According to the 1880 census, Amos and Martha's first son was Gus H. He was 14 at that time. I have him married to Mary Bell Brokaw on 18 Mar 1894 -- however, I do not have the source for this marriage. Jobe Re-Elected" (NOTE: This article doesn't have genealogy information about Mr. Jobe, but I thought I would go ahead and post it for the history value of Stewart County Schools) Many a young man and young women are now pulling across the great sea of life, whether or not their voyages are calm or stormy, whether or not a successful goal has been reached or is in sight, these once school boys and girls will be glad to learn of the continued success of their former adviser and instructor, PROF. A.W. JOBE, who was for many years connected with the public schools in Stewart County. After having successfully taught a number of years in Elementary schools of this county, persistently and untiringly though, like the most of us, now and then having a little battle with the enemies of disappointment and discouragement, he climbed on and on until he was recognized as one of the county's most through pedagogues in the branches and subjects he professed to know and teach. After having made for himself an enviable record in this county as a teacher, he moved to Clarksville Montgomery County where at a meeting of the County Court of that county he was elected S! uperintendent of Schools. Since that time he has been re-elected to the same position and Monday at a meeting of the County Court of the county he was again re-elected unanimously. Many of the teachers who are now teaching in this county have at sometime, gone to school where MR. JOBE was the teacher. December 19th I killed a two-year old hog that weighed 663 pounds net, and made 18 gallons of lard. This hog was a thoroughbred Duroc Jersey, of the bacon type, which I picked and bought from R. W. CHERRY'S little herd, at Dover, Tennessee. Brother Farmer, I think it pays to feed thoroughbred hogs, the type and breed that suits you. I prefer the Duroc. If any of you kill or have already killed a larger hog from at two years old, let us all hear from you through the paper. Signed: T. H. Date of Newspaper: Friday, January 5, 1923 Page: Front Page Title: "John C. Ralls Visits Dover" Mr. John C. Ralls probably as well known man as has ever lived in this county, was here during the holidays shaking hands and mixing up generally with old friends and acquaintances. A little more than three years ago, Mr. Ralls resigned his position as General Manager of the Dover Iron Co. at Carlisle. Shortly after handing in his resignation he moved his family to Nashville, where he operated, until a few months ago, a school supply house. Not long ago he accepted a position or partnership in the Southland Mill and Elevator Co. and of which Company he is General Manager. The Southland Mill and Elevator Co. is said to be making as fine grade of flower (sic. flour) as is possible to procure from any source. While here, Mr. Ralls told us that he would send or have sent to us an explanation of the process by which their high grade flower (sic. flour) is made. This interesting story will appear in a later issue. We take pleasure in calling the attention of our readers to ! their ads which now appear regularly in the paper. Date of Newspaper: Friday, January 5, 1923 Page: Front Page Title: "Good Job for Hugh McWhirter" The many friends and acquaintances of Hugh McWhirter will be pleased to learn of his recent advanced step in his business career. Hugh began making acquaintances and friends when quite a boy, when he drove a produce wagon over a great section of the county. After having followed this for several years, he accepted a position or partnership with the Bear Spring Mercantile Co., Bear Springs. He sold out his interest there a few weeks ago and has recently accepted a position on the road as representative of the Clark-Lack Grocery Co., of Paducah, Kentucky. We predict success for him with his company, as has been his reward in everything he has ever undertaken . His ability to sell, the genuine pleasantness with which he meets people and practical knowledge he has of the public more than doubly qualify him for the position he now holds.
