Herndon (1850) 285 settlement with Benjamin Herndon, administrator of the estate of Phillip Herndon (insolvent); 1 Jun 1850 makes me think that if not that Phillip then another Phillip Herndon is his father. and then there was Stewart County Historical Society, Stewart County Tennessee Vol II 2000, pg 324 under Porter Herndon, that lists his grandparents as Louis (b 1824) and Mary Futrell Herndon.
