Brenda, I haven't looked for David Etheridge in any census. From the other things presented here, I suppose he could have been in the 1820 of Davidson Co. Those dates: I can't see any way of construing the guardian filings as saying anything other than that the Penina Etherige of the first filing, 1825, is the mother of the kids named. Then, Will Book B, page Page 237 says she is the widow of David T. Enough for me. But, how can she have a son b. not later than 1814, if Marcy was was her mother, married in 1803? Not a good fit! And if Nathan had a change of wives from Nancy Pratt TO Marcy after 1818 has no bearing (with the understanding that an 1803 marriage of Nathan was his first.) My question is, who was he married to, as much as 5 years earlier?? That is necessary to explain Penina's son, William T. Etherige. I haven't bothered my head over whose "widow Bruton" Nathan married. I figger that there are enough Bruton's and descendants to worry over that. You wanted suggestions on " more information about Jonathan Skinner." Jerree says the 1779 birth of Nathan was in Chowan Co., NC. If he was a brother, that County should be a starting place. And maybe Davidson, as a stopover place. On another line, a descendant of Alexander Joice just sent me : Father: Napoleon B. Joice b. 1794 NC Son Napoleon JR. b. 1830 Son Samuel Alexander b. 1831 Someone said here recently that Napoleon, Jr was b. 1839. This desc. doesn't think so. Just my thoughts, Chuck
Nathan Skinner married Elizabeth Bruton on 17 Feb 1846 in Stewart-TN. ******** [Stewart-TN Deeds Bk Vol I (1791-1806):247] Bill of Sales from Henry Skinner to Thomas Brigham I, Henry Skinner, of Stewart-TN, for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars to me in hand paid, have sold to Thomas Brigham of the same county and state, a certain negro girl named Rose. In witness I have set my hand and seal this 27th of January 1808. Witness: Silas Vinson Henry Skinner Samuel (X) Dorrity ********* NOT PROVEN FACTS I believe Henry Skinner is one of the brothers of Nathan Skinner that moved from Chowan-NC. He seems to be literate. He owned a slave and very few people in that time and in that area owned slaves. Maybe he was in the unproven business of `murder, inc' with one or more of his brothers. These may be the other brothers:Samuel, Jonathan and Moses. jerree

Can you find David Etheridge in any census? Elizabeth Bruton is a widow and now I can not remember who her husband was. Hope I come across it. Actually, I would guess that Nathan needed a mother for his young children. On a Trigg County site, it is suggested that Nathan Skinner died from a "congestive fever" what ever that is. The article is about the Brandon's; but, makes mention of Nathan Skinner and does not make him endearing! The age spread that I have figured for his daughter is interesting. Nancy is unknown and the others are in 1803, 1804, 1812, 1818, and 1827. Makes one wonder if a first wife died after 1818 and a new wife, Marcy, could be the one divorced in 1827! I will also look for more information about Jonathan Skinner. I have thought that he was a brother; but, may be a cousin? Any suggestions? Brenda -----Original Message----- From: Chuck Phillips [mailto:75271.2472@compuserve.com] Sent: Friday, September 17, 2004 6:08 PM To: TNSTEWAR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TNSTEWAR] Lancaster, Skinner & the others Brenda, Rita, and any others who responded on this subject: I only got Blair's of 2PM Thurs, (and Rita's, off list), then I see Rita & Brenda corresponding. We miss a lot when only some of the messages are on the list. Rita's directly to me contained living people; good reason. NOW, I see Blair's of 7:29AM, Fri., ONLY as the "Original Message" as the response to me --->when Rita answers her! And Brenda's of 7:41 PM, Thurs. I didn't get those. (Brenda sent me his will, months ago.) Let's see if I can answer what was aimed at me, AND what you aimed at each other, mostly in disagreement with what I posted. Where this is different from my first posting, I have accepted all your corrections/ additions, like Nathan's first wife was Marcy, instead: (BUT, I will have a large question at the bottom of this.) Brenda of 7:41 PM, Thurs: You have better data than I do. Nathan was b. Jan 29, 1779 and died Oct 26, 1846. He m. Marcy, 1802-3--div. in 1827; m. Marina (the Trophy Wife); she had the 2 kids, Melinda Skinner b. 1832 and Nathan b. 1834. She died Dec 19, 1845 and is buried next to him. And he m. Elizabeth Unknown Bruton (a widow, I think), for comfort in his old age, which didn't last long. Maybe he tried to act like a newly-wed, instead of like the old man he was (?) "In his will, he mentions his daughter, Penina, wife of John Fletcher--" yes, I had seen that; she m. him after Henry Duncan. Penina m. 3 times; Etheridge, Duncan and Fletcher. Brenda said: "I have yet to figure out where Penina Etheridge fits." She was named in Nathan's first guardian's filing (1825) for David T Etheridge's family. My ill-defined dates for her and daughters' marriages are brought on by the dating of those guardian's filings. And the other Penina, dau of Jonathan Skinner, is not to be confused. Any third Penina I know nothing about, nor her father, Moses--I think I had not seen his name. And I think that the group of all of you, and others not recently heard from, have sufficiently sorted out the family to not be confused, even though there's "a lot to unravel." NOW, my question: IF Nathan's m. to Marcy in 1802-3 was his first, how to resolve the dates: Penina had kids early: IF she was b. 1803, how come her son William Etheridge reached an age of majority so early, that I, working from the guardian's filings, placed his birth only a few years later ?? Clearly, I found him missing from those filings early. Couldn't find the filings UNTIL NOW! Will Book B: Page 4: Nathan Skinner, John Fletcher, J. B. How do you reconcile his birth with the reported m. of his GRANDPARENTS ?? And THAT'S why I latched onto that 1765 date I found for a birth in NC, and not the 1779 ! And had a marriage date for Penina Skinner so early, in conflict with her parents marriage. Q: Was Nathan m. before Marcy ?? Maybe to a Penina? And that's how I started this! Eddie, I am interested in the name of Nancy Pratt. The name I gleaned from the divorce docs for Nathan Skinner was Marcy. I can see how Nancy would be a possibility. I looked again (I have copies) and the old writing is very difficult to read. However, it does look as if the name was Marcy. But, I suppose I could conclude that whoever wrote the docs was consistent with their penmanship. He blames her for drinking, neglecting the children, and sleeping around. He includes the name of several, (I think three) men. Two names can be determined and the third could not, as I recall. The timing for the marriage would be right. Do you have any proof of the NC connection and this marriage? Nancy Pratt 1803; moved to Davidson Co., TN in 1804 then to Stewart Co., TN; joined the Methodist Church in 1830. Also if you go to USGenWeb>KY>Trigg Co. there are articles "Echoes From the Past" by Judy Maupin and under the article "George Brandon," there is a paragraph about Nathan Skinner. You also had an Adaline Etheridge Walker who m. #2 Richard L. Lancaster (1835- 1907). His #2 marriage was to Emily Frances Carney (1848-?) and they had two children: 1) Sarah Lancaster (1876-1917) who m. Henry Austin Wallace (1871-1941); 2) George Walker Lancaster (1884-1972) If the name Emily Frances Carney seems familar..... she first m. Napolean Joice, Jr. (1839-?). Richard Lancaster from above is the son of George Walter Lancaster (1885-?) & Callie Ruth Whitford. George W.'s parents were Nelson Alexander Lancaster (1853-1938) & Angelne Hensley b. 1861. Nelson's parents were Elijah Lancaster (1829-1908) and Elizabet Clauson (1831- 1908). If you want anymore info on the Lancasters I have the full birth & death dates, place, marriage, etc. Hope it helps to make you feel part of it all!
