Marsha, You and your notebook have brought back such wonderful memories for me! It's been 20 years and you still have that piece of paper! You said------It's a xeroxed page, headed "for Sandy Ellis SHEPHERD July 29, '84" and signed "Eileen" and how I came to have it I don't know unless Sandy sent it to my mom years ago when they were corresponding. "Eileen" was Eileen Baggett. She lived here in Clarksville and we "met" every week to work on genealogy. Eileen, Maloye Bragg, Geneva Swain, and Louise Wyatt were all my mentors when I first started formally working on genealogy---they taught me the ropes so I could learn from their mistakes. Ursula Beach and Ann Alley were always a telephone call away, too. (We didn't have computers or internet back then!) Ann Alley worked at the TN State Archives and published a newsletter----"The Montgomery County Genealogical Journal". The notes you have were taken from a page in the 'journal'! Eileen was meticulous about keeping notes and even though we saw each other often, if she ran across anything that might be useful to me, she typed it (on onion-skin paper!) and mailed it to me---with a copy going to Maloye and Geneva! Yes, I probably sent a copy of the paper to your mother. When the 1st Stewart County book came out, she had several articles in it about the Shepherd family. It was only natural for me to sit down and write her a letter---and make a few phone calls! I was born a "Sheppard" but my paternal line didn't move to Tennessee until 1870. My grandmother Sheppard was born a Graham---but her mother was Fannie Shepherd! The Samuel Shepherd in this note was the father of Robert who married Ann Meachum. Their son Martin Luther is almost certainly the father on "my" Fannie! Her death certificate says her father's name was "Luther". Census records for Martin Luther and Nancy list children that I know were "my" Fannie's sibblings----her sister Sally married Tom Trice. It was through Sally and Tom's family that my grandparents met! I've not done much research into this Shepherd line other than collecting all the local records I could find. I've been "stuck" with Fannie's husband for years but think I may have broken down that very difficult brick wall just this past week! There weren't too many Ferrel Grahams born in the 1850s in the entire US----but I found one last week and everything seems to "fit" but I still have things to resolve before I can be sure it's the family I've been searching for all these years! Again----thank you for "making my day" and bringing back such wonderful memories of some terrific people! Sandy Ellis

Rita, Hello, the obituary says "Survivors are his widow Mrs. Maggie Bell, Largent Myers of Dover" Could it be that the comma shouldn't be there and this should read "Maggie Bell Largent Myers" and Largent is her maiden name? I think that's the way it should be, my mistake. That's VERY interesting! It's also exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Well, it's actually BETTER than what I was looking for! I'll go by our library tomorrow and do some lookups in their DAR indexes, and then I'll probably order a copy of the DAR application for him. I'll let you know what I put together. Thanks so much for posting this, you've made my day!
