Roger, Hello, I don't know how much experience you've had with ordering records from the NARA, but my experience has been that the lower cost gets you less that the higher cost. I have done a comparison. I know it's a lot of money for what you actually get, but I think you will be happy you paid it. Just my two cents. Rita, Good puzzle! I had the Tabitha Stancil connection in my notes as well, but no documentation as to why. Perhaps someone with marriage books can check 10 Dec 1844 for a Henry Trinkle marriage to Tabitha _______. First, consider the 1850 census: Henry TRINKLE 31 m w farmer 1000 Tenn Tabitha TRINKLE 31 f w Tenn John MYERS 12 m w Tenn Gustavus STANFILL 7 m w Tenn Ann MILAM 15 f w Tenn Next, consider Will Book F, page 139: George W. Stanfill, administrator of John Stanfill, and John L. McMillan, make bond in Stanfill's protest of the year's provisions to Tabitha Stanfill, widow of John Stanfill; 4 Mar 1844 You could then put together a reasonable theory that Tabitha Trinkle had formerly been married to John Stanfill, and was the mother of Gustavus Stanfill, born about 1842. John Stanfill died in February, 1844, and his widow Tabitha remarried 10 Dec 1844 to Henry Trinkle. Henry Trinkle was the adminstrator of the estate of John Milam - but why? Was he John Milam's son-in-law, married to John's daughter Tabitha? Too bad John Milam didn't leave a will naming Tabitha. So, was there even a Tabitha Stancil, daughter of John & Liddy? Now, I begin to doubt myself, and I'm a Stancil descendant... Well, like I said, I'm happy to be proven wrong! I just couldn't find any information about it online or in the library. I may order a copy of the pension packet from archives.gov. It's kind of ironic that you said his pension was $30, but a copy of his complete pension records now costs $37! (I'll probably order the $14.75 pack). Roger, It's not raining just yet. I have a copy of "our" Samuel Shepherd's pension application and a copy of the document granting the pension (a whopping $30). It was he who died in Montgomery County in 1838. I think my copy of the application is a copy of a copy of a copy, so it is really terrible, or I would scan it and send it to you. But maybe it will help you (mentally, anyway) to know the documents for which you are searching do really exist. The transcript provided by Eleanor Williams and quoted in Sandy's e-mail is almost a necessity, as the handwriting is absolutely awful. I have a copy of Samuel's will also, and it is frustrating as it only mentions by name his wife and his two (at the time) unmarried daughters. Our ancestors surely did not make it easy for us, did they? Hang in there. Marcia

Roger---- "The Montgomery County Genealogical Journal" that I mentioned earlier was published by Ann Alley. In the 'journal', people contributed various information----one such item of interest was Rev. War ancestors. Samuel Shepherd's information was contributed by Eleanor Shepherd Williams. (Mrs. Williams is the local historian for Montgomery County!) Mrs. Williams writes: "from Montgomery County Circuit Court--August Term 1832 "On the 28th day of August in the year of our lord one thousand and eight hundred and thirty two personally appeared in open court before the judge of the Circuit Court now sitting for Montgomery County, Samuel Shepherd, a resident of Montgomery County in the State of Tennessee, aged sixty nine years lacking one month, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832. "That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as here in stated. At the time when he the said Samuel Shepherd entered the service he was a resident of the State of North Carolina and the County of Orange and lived about 13 miles from Hillsboro. He was born on the 28th day of September in the year 1763 as appears from a family record made by his father and now in his (the said Samuel's) possession, which he believes to be correct and true. He entered the service in the year 1780 and in the month of June as a drafted soldier in the North Carolina line of militia--and at the time he was drafted he lived with Edward Trice who is now living and a resident of this county and will swear to many of the facts which I shall state in this declaration. . . ." Mrs. Williams further says: "Samuel Shepherd b, 28 Sept 1763 Middlesex Co. Va. d. Dec 1837 Montgomery Co., Tenn. married Elizabeth S. Meachum 14 Aug 1784 Orange Co., N.C. Issue: 1. Spencer Thornsberry Shepherd b. 16 Jan 1806 NC. d. 5 May 1897 married 1. Mallsy Ann Perry 2. Frances Yarbrough dau. of Davis and Penelope Luton Yarbrough. 2. Michel (Mickey) Shepherd b. around 1799 d.____ living in 1850 married Josiah Smith 3. Nancy Shepherd b. around 1786 d.______ living in 1850. never married 4. Sarah (Sally) Shepherd b. around 1820 d. ______ living in 1850. married Samuel Lee in 1838. 5. unknown daughter who married Marable. 6. Robert Shepherd b. ca 1797 d. 19 Apr 1877 married Ann? Meacham. 7. Lewis Shepherd b. 1814/1815 d._____ married Lonney ? 8. Mitchum (Meachum) Shepherd" (Notice there are large gaps between the births of children!) I hope this helps! Sandy Ellis

Regarding Tabitha Stancil daughter of John Stancil b 1775 - 1844 & Lydia 'Liddy' Cherry - Does anyone know who Tabitha Stancil married? I had her married to Henry H. Trinkle December 10, 1844, however, I am wondering if this is correct since there is an article in the Stewart County Book Vol I, Page 426-7 that says William Trinkle was the son of Henry H. Trinkle and Tabitha Milam. Any thoughts anyone? Rita

Marcia/Sandy, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but doing a bit of quick research today during lunch has turned up an irregularity that concerns me about Samuel SHEPHERD. I'm going to request some documents from the DAR and do some more research, but here's what I have so far. Here's what Marcia originally quoted, for reference: > "I also found info on Samuel Shepherd in "Roster of Soldiers and > Patriots of the Am. Revolution Buried in Tenn" - by Tn. NSDAR. > > "page---157:---Samuel Shepherd (b: 9-28-1763 Middlesex Co. Va/d 1838 > Montgomery Co. Tn.) Pvt. from Orange Co. N.C. for 9 mos, Pen. No. > S-21476 Nat'l Archives; m. 8-14-1784 Orange Co.N.C. to Elizabeth S. > Meacham b/NC d: 1843-50 Montgomery Co. Tn. Ch: Spencer Thornsberry b. > 1-16-1806 NC d 5-21-1897 bur on Ft. Campbell ground in what is now > Stewart Co. Tn. Private marker, m. 1st Mallsey Ann Perry d 1843; m 2nd > Frances Yarborough in 1843 - -- Nancy was living in 1838; Sally m. > Samuel Lee; Michel b 1799 m. Josiah Smith; Robert b: 1797 m. Ann > _______; Lewis b 1814-1815; dau m. ______Marable. Ref: DAR # > 571485." In the book "Twenty-Four Hundred Tennessee Pensioners, Revolution -- War of 1812", Compiled by Zella Armstrong, 1937, There is only one Samuel Shepherd listed. He was 72 in 1832, served in Virginia, but drew his pension in Wilson County. It also says that he was in the 1840 Census So the birth and death don't quite match up and the county is wrong. In the book "Tennessee Wills and Administrations 1779-1861" by byron and Barbara Sistler, 1990, it shows three Samuel Shepherds: One died in Wilson County in 1837 (Will Book 149), a second died in Wilson County in 1848 (Will Book 162), and a third died in Montgomery County in 1838 (Record Book H 64). So, it looks from this information like the Revolutionary War soldier was the Samuel Shepherd who died in Wilson County in 1848, *NOT* the one who died in Montgomery County in 1838, and the latter seems to be OUR Samuel Shepherd. I'm going to ask a relative in Montgomery County to get a copy of that will for me. I think that may help clear things up a bit. I hope I'm wrong, but I'll let you know as I learn more. _\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_\|/_ | Roger L. Hi, Sandy, Hey, we genealogists live in the past, anyway, right? For a moment, you got to re-visit your own past. I'm glad I could bring back some pleasant memories. Marcia

Check Vol I, Page 426-7 Stewart County History, not clear as to whom her parents. Norris
Note: I think the Grandchild's name in this obituary should be Henley, not Menley even though that is what the obituary says.
