I have a copy of the map. In fact, I have had it for many years, but I was trying to help some new folks locate it. Thank you for your offer. It's very kind of you, and I appreciate it. I love that map. I first found it in THE RIVER COUNTIES magazine in the late sixties or early seventies, but that was only for the top corner of the map - mostly the part between the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers, and for maybe ten miles south of the state border, and maybe a mile or two north of the border. The full map covers much more - east to at least the middle of Montgomery County, and south beyond the southern border, and east into the next county over there. May you find a way to make you immune to jet lag. Betty Clay At 01:57 AM 1/4/2008, you wrote: >Hello Betty >I have a copy of the map I think you are talking about. My great grandfather, John B. Cross lived along Guice's Creek. He died at the old home place in1906. Later Richard A. McCaskell lived on the property Maybe this will help. That map of Stewart County that was posted cuts off the eastern edge of Stewart County about where Guices Creek enters the Cumberland. Most of the Parchmans lived just east of the creek and are missing from the map. Only Jesse Parchman is shown at the very edge, but John and Jacob also had land just south of there inherited from their father John (settled in Stewart County in 1789). I would love to find a copy of the map that goes further east. Gerry Parchman
Hello Betty I have a copy of the map I think you are talking about. I have not been following this discussion as I have been running back and forth across "the pond" and just checked me email for the first time in 2 weeks. Bruce: I believe that should be Asbury Church. The old Church building is still there. Located on Leatherwood Rd. between Upper Standing Rock road and Hwy 232. It is just across from Rainwater Rd. When the Church closed in the late 1970s the congregation relocated to Leatherwood Methodist Church. It is now called Leatherwood-Asbury Methodist Church and is located closer to Hwy 232 on Leatherwood Rd. I do not know of any Cemetery connected to the old Asbury Church. There is a fairly large Cemetery (Leatherwood Church Cemetery) located behind the Leatherwood-Asbury Church...

For John 1715-1788, I have children Daniel, John, Charity, Jehew, Thomas, Ephraim, Phereby, Joel, Martha, and Lawrence. I have spouses for Charity (Joseph Lassiter), Thomas (Sarah Biddle), Joel (Elizabeth?), and Lawrence (Amy Odom) John left a will in Northampton County, NC in 1786, naming these children. He named his wife as Martha, but there are those who dispute that she was Martha Daugherty. It seems that Martha Daughtrey had a sister named Mary. Her father was Joshua Daughtrey. In Joshua Daughtrey's will, he named Mary as the wife of some other man and then named her as the wife of John Futrell. So there is controversy about it. Since John's wife was definitely named Martha, from other records, I agree with those who think her to be the daughter of Joshua Daugherty, and that Joshua made a slip when he called her Mary. Take your own pick. I have John's father as Thomas Futrell (about 1659-1739), and his wife was Ann, but I don't have a surname for her. I have children Thomas J., Benjamin, John, and Joseph. I have Thomas J. married to Hannah ??, Benjamin married to Mourning ??, and John married to Martha Daughtrey as above. Betty Sellers told me that Thomas was b. in 1659 in Chetton, Shropshire, England. I have Thomas' father as another Thomas Futrell (Fewtrell), married to Gillian Jarrell. From Hotten's IMMIGRANTS, P. 502, Thomas Futer (sic) is listed as a land owner in the parish of St. James, as taken by the church wardens of the parish on 20 Dec. 1679. Thomas Futrell is first mentioned in Virginia as a taxpayer in 1678 in Surrey County.. At that time he was a resident of Lawnes Creek Parish. He was not listed on the tax rolls before 1678 nor after 1688. His date of death is established by the fact that his widow, Gilian Futrell, presented an inventory of his estate on 28 April, 1693. (Surry Co., Va Deeds, Wills, Etc., No. 4, 1687-1694, reel 2, pp. 279b, 302b, and 303a, as quoted in THE FUTRELL FAMILY IN AMERICA, p.3) WILLS AND ADMINISTRATIONS OF SURRY COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1671-1750, by Eliza Timberlake Davis, Gen. Pub. Co., Baltimore, MD 1980 lists the will of Thomas Futrell who died leaving an estate, and Gilian Futerell, his Relict, asks for Com. of admr. be granted to her. Granted. 29 Apr., 1693. Thanks for looking for it Betty. Leslie ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's better to fight for something than against something. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----- Original Message ----- From: Betty Clay To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, January 01, 2008 8:09 AM Subject: Re: [TNSTEWAR] Betty Clay I'm sorry, but I cannot locate the call number this morning. I know it was carefully kept back then, and it is possibly in one of my file cabinets, but my quick look did not find it. The official name of the map appears to be 'Map of Middle Tennessee by Col. W. E. Merrill, 1865.' I had hoped it was written on the back of my copy of the map, but it isn't. The copy from NARA is big. It covers an area west of the Tennessee River (but without the names of landowners) to the middle of Montgomery County, and from the Tennessee/Kentucky state line far down into Mississippi. If I come across that call number, I'll post it here, but I don't know where to look for it right now. I'm sure it is in one or another of the sources in my database, but I have thousands of people in that database.
