Sharon....I wonder if, in those other areas, you are finding on the census they could "read, write, were at school"....In the Middle Tennessee country areas, I have found many of my family could not obtain the education needed...at times they were needed at home to work the farms and/or help raise children when a mother had passed on at far too young an age. Hence...the various spellings and strange names.
