Sadler The a copy of the following letter was provided to me by a fellow researcher about 4 years ago. The copy was very poor (too much black noise in background so I retyped the letter.) There are so many names mentioned I thought it might be of interest to others. The highlighted names are my family relatives. I realize the letter was written in Jackson Co. but some of these folks likely were intwined with Smith Co. Sadler Letter 1864 Copied by Mrs. Maude McGlassom-Gainesboro, TN 1937 Bullards Creek, Tennessee September 18th, 1864 Mr. Lee Sadler, Dear Brother: I saw a letter today from S. M. McCawley, dated August 16th, stating that you was with your command and in good health, which we were very thankful to hear, but sorry to hear you were crippled, but it may all be for the best; we still hope your life will be spared and you will be permitted to return home again. We are all at this time in the enjoyment of good health. Henry is going to school, Oliver, Lissie and the children are well, Sis and her children are well, Lydia is going to school. Frank and Vantis Fowler are at Camp Chase in prison, we hear from them nearly every week, they are well at last account. Halls family are well, Bill McCawley is at home, the widow Brooks family are well. Peter Brooks, Ephraim Wilson and Harrison Draper died on Rock Island. We have never heard anything from Dennis McCawley. Marshall Brooks is dead. A.W.W. Brooks, Marlin Haile and Kirby from your company have been at home. Joshua and Thomas Haile are at Camp Chase in prison with Frank, they were well the last time we heard from them. Davidson-Dycus family are well. Tell J.B. West his father and mother are well and that Nancy McCoin married a federal soldier by the name of Marion Long. I will now give a list of marriages as best I can. R.F. Richmond and Polly Hobby. Bill McCoin and Emma Brooks. Lizzie Richmond and John Duvall. Belle Petty and Sam Johnson. Arelias Hall and Samantha Bryant. Fannie Sadler and Bill Stanton. Will Harring and Mary Huffines. I believe that is all. Dr. Bill Sadler and Dr. Matt Sadler are both dead. We saw Dr. Ferguson today; he said his and Thomas Bryants family are well. I believe our friends and acquaintances in general are well. S______s(indecipherable) health is tolerable good, he sends his respects to you. John and Andy are still here and doing as well as could be expected. Martha ran away last Spring. Crops are very good though we have some losses we still have plenty to eat and wear and are very thankful for that. I hope the time will soon come when you can return home and dwell in peace with us again. Give my compliments and best wishes to all my acquaintances. Mother, Puss, Settie, Henry, Sis, Lizzie and Oliver send their love to you and respects to inquiring friends. Papa is well, he sends his best wishes to you. If you get this letter you must write immediately for it will be a great pleasure to hear from you. Accept my love and best wishes and believe me to remain unchanged. I will now close by subscribing myself your loving and affectionate sister until death. Mary J. Sadler Direct your letters to Tompkinsville, Monroe County, KY in the care of James G.
