I'm asking if anyone can give me any help on the following families. I'll give you what I have thus far and mayhap someone out there can untangle it. My great great grandmother was Mary J. Harris (May 1867 - 5 Sep 1955). She is buried in Moore Cemetery in Bear Springs, Stewart, TN next to her third husband. Husband 1 = John L. Cox (m. 24 Dec 1884). Husband 2 = George Lafayette Boring (m. 1890/1896). Husband 3 = Wilson William Hooper (m. bef 1907). Mary J. Harris was raised by her mother Margaret Clementine Thacker (abt 1849 - 1929) and her stepfather William Thomas Parker (1843 - 1917). This has caused some confusion as occasionally Mary appeared as a Parker, including on her first marriage license. Mary J. Harris' biological father was a Wiley Harris. I finally found a marriage date for Margaret Clementine Thacker and Wiley Harris of 20 Aug 1865 in Montgomery County, TN. After going through every possibly Wiley Harris, I am 99.9% sure that Wiley Harris was the son of David Harris of Smith County, TN. My reasoning is this: 1. "My" Wiley Harris needs to be born roughly 1840/1850 in TN. 2. "My" Wiley Harris needs to be dead by 1870. 3. My Wiley Harris needs to more than likely be connected to the Turner Harris that Margarent Clementine Thacker's brother was living with in the 1860 census in Stewart County, TN. All the pieces fit for me for the Wiley Harris that was the son of David Harris of Smith County, TN. He was born about 1847 in TN. He in unlocatable in the 1870 US Census. His father David Harris is somehow related to the Turner Harris of 1860+ in Stewart County, TN. The Turner Harris of Stewart County is one of the Turner Harris men of Smith County, TN prior to 1860 ... probably the son of John Harris and Susannah "Sooky" Dillard who was born in 1823 as their dates of birth match. Another Thacker/Harris/Dillard connection to throw into the mix: John Calvin Thacker (abt 1844 - 1915) married Salina Hester nee Dillard, widow of John Hester with whom she had a son Charles that John Calvin Thacker raised as his own son. Salina "Sallie" Dillard married John Hester on the 8 Jun 1857 in Montgomery County, TN. She married John Calvin Thacker on the 27th of Jun 1861 in Montgomery County, TN. Wiley Harris (abt 1847 - 1866/1869) is the son of David Harris and a woman known alternately as Polly and Mary depending on whether you are looking at the 1850 or 1860 census for Smith County, TN. In 1850 the David Harris household appears as: David Harris (b. about 1808 in NC) Mary "Polly" Harris (b. about 1823 in VA) Don D. Harris (b. about 1837) Thomas Harris (b. abt 1838) Felix Harris (b. abt 1840) Rachel Harris (b. about 1842) William R. Harris (b. about 1844) Wiley W. Harris (b about 1847) In the 1860 census the household has the same parents, but the only children remaining at home are William (b. about 1844) and Wiley (b. about 1847). David Harris also appears in the 1840 census index for Smith County. Also appear in the 1840 census for Smith County are Turner Harris (that I mentioned above, b. 1823) and Notley Harris. Both Turner and Notley Harris moved to Stewart County ... Notley by 1850 and Turner by 1860. By 1870, David Harris had followed them to Stewart County, had a new wife ... again named Mary and they had a son David Jr. about 1862. There was also a Holmes or Homer Harris (b. abt 1817 in NC) that appears in the 1850 census for Stewart County, TN that I'm going to assume is related to David, Turner, and Notley some how. I found some other research that suggested that Turner Harris, born 1823, was the son of John Harris (b. abt 1799 in NC) and Susannah "Sooky" Dillard (b. about 1800 in VA). There are a tremendous number of Harris connections that run between Stewart County and Smith County, TN with some less obvious connections in Montgomery County, TN. I will be forwarding family groups to the lists in hopes that someone can add/correct any information that I have. I will send supporting data as I have it. Thank you so much.
