    1. Smith Co Historical & Genealogical Society Meeting
    2. The next meeting of the SCH&GS will be held Monday, September 19 at 7 p.m. in the library basement in Carthage. This months program will feature former Smith County resident Shirley Tellis. Mrs. Tellis will be sharing the history, as well her memories of students, teachers and activities of the Old Turner School. In 1926, local citizens realized the need for education in the African American Community. These citizens, both white and black, banded together to make it a reality. They applied for a matching grant from the Rosenwald Fund, which was set up to assist in costs such as construction for African American schools. Annie Lee Myer Turner, wife of Judge W.H. Turner, played a leading role in obtaining the grant and as a result, the school was named in her honor. Turner School held classes for students in first through eighth grades. Until the mid 1960’s, if an African American wanted to continue their education through high school, they were required to travel to Wilson or Putnam County. Everyone is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. Retta Waggoner- Publicity
