    1. Carthage Courier Obit Transcriptions by Melba
    2. Eldon Wilkins
    3. In April 2000, I completed my compilation (in three four inch binders) of my Carthage Courier Obituaries. A set of these is in the Carthage Library. Each of the three volumes is Indexed. Book I is years 1976-1992; Book II is years 1993 - 1996; and Book III is for years 1997 - 1999. I have compiled the years from 2000 to present but have not gotten all into my index. (My computer crashed and with our move into our new home my work slowed down.) I will continue this project and when the next set is ready I will let you know. John Waggoner viewed these and was surprised/happy at how quickly he located names. I soon will be sending corrections re my address listed in those books, yet my phone remains the same. My request is simply this: If you are in Carthage, reviewing these and you note where I have a ( ) for a female's maiden name, would you please send it to me.if you have knowledge of it. As I have searched the Smith Co. areas for a long time and have many relatives still there, I was able from this source and through the obituary able to list this information on a lot of females. I also included nicknames where known and first/second marriages. When I decided to copy/cut/paste the obits I had no intention of using them for anyone but my own purposes, when it was completed I felt this was too good a genealogical tool not to share it. What is it? The photocopy of the exact obit (I have all the originals) as it appeared in the Carthage Courier, date and volume of the issue at the heading. I made up my own Index listing...and can say I am proud of how it came out! There are a few years included of obits of the 1970's that I do not have complete obits as my practice used to be to cut out only what I knew of family and discard the rest. If, when viewing these records, you find you have some of my missing ones, if you would send me a copy I can add this to the original and the one in Carthage. My hat goes off to the editor of the Carthage Courier (presently Eddie West) No other newspaper gives the information about a deceased individual such as this one. Never change the format!!! So, if you visit Carthage, view my work. Someday, perhaps I can get the Index online. Melba Greene Wilkins
