So, folks, I am pretty new at this. I've been watching and reading all the superior details flowing across the internet on everyone's family but mine. Nobody seems to be a part of the Evetts clan from Smith County. Apparently we can track to George Evetts 1738-1800 in Burke, NC.....although it is possible that it might be Joseph Sr or Moses instead. Our infamous family Texas historian and history writer, J. Evetts Haley, votes for George. His kids were Samuel Givens Evetts, maybe William, maybe Thomas Franklin, maybe Joseph. Samuel's kids were Margaret Evetts who married a John Foley, James Harrison Evetts (Sam Houston's blacksmith and fought in the San Jacinto War in Texas Independence, William B Evetts who left for Missouri and Illinois, Thomas Franklin Evetts and Samuel Givens Evetts, Jr. who fought in the Battle of Bexar (San Antonio) which preceded the Battle of the Alamo by about three months. Margaret, Jim, Bill, Frank, and Sam Jr. were all born in Smith County. So was Samuel Givens Evetts Sr. James Harrison Evetts's son, William Caperton Evetts, fathered 16 children, 14 of which lived to adulthood and out of those about 10 were natural born artists. William spent his time basically as a gunslinger in early Texas history in Coryell County, Texas around the Temple area. If anyone knows any ties to the Evetts family, I surely would appreciate hearing from you. Part of our tracing problem is that Evetts has been spelled Avitts, Avetts, Evett, Avett, Avitt, Abbitts, Abbetts, Ebbetts, Ebbitts, Evits, and Avits...sometimes all in the same family.
