For those of you who have heard about the use of DNA in tracing your family tree and wondered if it might be for you, I recommend a relatively new book for your consideration: TRACE YOUR ROOTS WITH DNA by Megan Smolenyak and Ann Turner (2004). This book presents this subject in very easily understood language and provides additional steps that you might want to consider if youre interested. Alton Jenkins Cincinnati, OH, USA

I've read this book front to back and totally agree... it is excellent. We have entered the DNA program for surname Davis out of Smith Co, TN. Invite all with that surname to join. I notice your Hopson name - your husbands? I have a Hopson line. Benjamin Hopson born ca 1785 VA, the family stayed in Va until about 1828, then to Tennessee in 1832. After 1840 but before 1850 census they arrived in Arkansas. 1850 census Van Buren Co Arkansas. Their son John Hopson born ca 1834 TN, died 1865-67....he married Nov 1865 Van Buren Co AR to widow Martha Hawkins Simpkins....had daughter Josephine Hopson born ca 1866 VBC AR.....she married Buel Mullins and they are my great-grandparents. Does this sound anything like your Hopson family? Could yours have moved to Texas from Arkansas or Tennessee? I have not been able to find out how John Hopson died, it would have been after the war which was over in 1865......but I suspect he probably served in the war.
