Are there any newspapers that might have infomation on Smith Co families as early as 1850, 60, or 70? Judy

Judy, I have worked for newspapers for the last 30 years. What I have found is that most newspapers begin around 1882-1888, there where a few papers around before that time period. As far as microfilm copies of earlier papers some of the earlier editions are hit or miss weather they could find them to microfilm. The Carthage Courier according to the website started in 1913 http://carthagecourier.com/aboutus.html Nashville archive my hold some other earlier papers that didn't survive.
