George, I am not related but I have some information that might help. John Stevens bought and sold a lot of land in Smith CO. in and around Carthage. There was also James Stevens. Going thru the Smith CO census, I believe John died between 1870 and 1880. I last found him in the 1870 Smith CO , New Middleton census living in house 176, John Stevens age 74 b. VA , value of land $3000 and personal 1358, living with him is Frances age 17 daughter, Eliza(Louisa) A. age 15 daughter, George age 12 son. Next door lives Goodloe age 22 wife Bettie age 15 or 16. I found Goodloe b. 5 Sept 1847 died 8 March 1928 and Fannie P Stevens Bransford b. 27 Nov 1852 died 5 Sept 1885 (wife of W.G. Bransford) buried in the Bransford Cemetery near New Middleton TN. I went to Ancestry.com and found that in 2002 Anne at [email protected] had information on your John Stevens. She states that John was born 1795 in Caroline CO VA he died after 1850 while living in Smith CO TN( we know he lived at least to 1870 in Smith Co TN) She gave his wife as Almenia b 1818 KY. The census for 1860 her name was spelled Elinamia( I think this is poor spelling on the census takers part or he wrote it like it sounded) because on the 1850 her name is spelled Almenia. Anne gives the children of John as Mildred b. abt 1840, Aquilla abt 1844, Penelope abt 1846, Jonathan abt 1847( could be Aquilla J. on the 1860 census), Martha abt 1849. Now the best news, she said John's father was James Stevens who married Mary Bird Goodloe( aka John named his son Goodloe) Checking further on Anne's site, she gives the children of James Stevens d. in Middle TN and Mary Bird Goodloe as 1.Jeremiah Stevens 2.Elizabeth Stevens b. abt 1796 Caroline Co VA 3. James Stevens b abt 1795 VA 4. John Stevens b. abt 1795 James Stevens was also in Smith Co TN per the 1850 Smith CO TN census He had children 1. James b. abt 1838, 2. Goodloe !!!b. abt 1840, 3. John b.abt 1842, William b.abt 1844. His wife was Sarah A Yates b. 15 march 1811 Caroline CO VA died after 1850 Smith CO TN. They married 6 Oct 1836 Caroline Co VA. she gave source for marriage as Marriages of Caroline CO VA 1777-1853 and the Publication: Virginia Genealogical Society, 1988 Text: "Mr James Stevens of Carthage TN to Sarah Ann Yates, daughter of Mrs. Mildred Yates of Caroline CO"issue 6 Oct 1836. One of the land transaction was when John l.D. Hallum and wife of McCracken Co Kentucky sold to John Stevens a tract of land in the town of Carthage 19 Jan 1839 page 500 . Some of the land deed go back to 1820. There may be more information that I have not found yet. I bet if you found the land that John lived on in 1870, you would find graves because that's the way they buried back then. I will try to find a will for John in some of my Smith CO books. Just a few things to help with your research as my RAOK for today.
