My ancestor, Alexander Hamilton McCandless McWhirter, lived on a bluff at the mouth of Sink Creek on the Caney Fork River, when he died between 1850 & 1860. I have not been able to find a burial site and have checked the Corps of Engineers books on the people they exhumed and re-buried in other cemeteries when the dam was built. I'm not sure which county this area was in at that time, and realize many burials of the time went unmarked, but just wanted to know if anyone had any idea where someone in that area might have been buried. He and his wife, Elizabeth Robinson McWhirter, belonged to the Caney Fork Primitive Baptist Church but the Caney Fork PB Church Cemetery is just out of McMinnville a very few miles and I'm not sure that was the same church area. There are many graves in that cemetery marked only with field stones, and probably some don't even have that. Any information on where an older Caney Fork Primitive Baptist Church might have been would also be appreciated. Even if there was a short route from where they lived to the present Caney Fork PB Cemetery, it would have been a long way to ride on a Sunday AM. Glenda McWhirter Todd
Smith fork creek was called the collins river early on.... probably changed when joseph collins named started to be used on the river in warren county. I am not aware of an earlier name for mulherrin`s creek. Denny's branch was originally elk fork of the mulherrin. In very very early stuff the caney fork was refered to as thompsons river or thompsons fork....from the name of the early british explorer who canoed down the cumberland in the early 1760s.

The following came from the History of Callaway County Missouri. In addition to this, I found that William PRATT of Ireland came to the USA and served in the North Carolina Militia and was granted land in western North Carolina, now Smith County Tennessee. History of Callaway County Missouri Written and complied from the most authentic official and private sources including a history of its townships, towns and villages. St Louis, National Historical Company 1884. William Pratt and his wife, both natives of Ireland, came to America and settled in Smith County, Tennessee. They had John, William, and Lavinia. Mrs. Pratt died, and her husband subsequently married Polly Aikens, of Tennessee, by whom he had Nancy, Rebecca, Edward, Mary A., Jerusha, William, Albert G., Samuel, Araminta and Carroll. John and William Pratt came to Missouri in 1817. The former settled in Clay County. His wife was Anna Williams, and they both died, leaving four children-Charles W., Ann, Fidella and William. Charles W. married Sallie Vaughn, and lives in Callaway County. Fidella married John Allen, of Callaway County. William, son of William Pratt, Sr., married Jerusha Burchett, of Tennessee, and settled on Coats' Prairie, in Callaway County, in 1817. His children were John, Thomas J., James M., Lavinia, and Elizabeth. John died of cholera in 1833, in his 24th year. Thomas J. was married in 1839, to Lucinda Petty, by whom he had James M., John M., and Robert. Mr. Pratt was a good citizen and a hind husband and father. He died in 1876, and his loss was much lamented by all who knew him. James Pratt died in childhood, in Tennessee. Lavinia was married first to Oliver Wright, by whom she had William H. and Mary E. She was married the second time to James Hamilton, by whom she had one daughter, named Fannie Elizabeth Pratt, who married Hon. John S. Henderson, of Callaway County. Any information that anyone can provide on this family, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Michael Pratt O'Fallon, MO prattml@charter.net

Gale, Yes I have the maps as well as others. I have revisited RG1177 for Davidson County last week and will do Sumner County this next week. For any named creek that I cannot for sure identify I'll research. The biggest obstacle for this period is the surveys of the Caney Fork drainages which Thomas Hickman did. Much to be desired. The following was written by NorthCarolinaGenealogy.net: NorthCarolinaGenealogy.net announced today that work has been completed on integrating the query forum threads into the county detail pages. The genealogy site has a page and forum for each county. Until now, the county forums were the only place to see posts from the respective county. This integration is going to make it easier for users to have their queries found. The county pages get more traffic currently than the forums, so this raises their visibility on the site and with the search engines. Avery Parker, the site owner, was quoted to say; "This is a really exciting milestone for the site. We have been working to make the site more interactive so that the site visitors can post questions and reply to others that are searching for their ancestors and family in North Carolina. This added integration between the forum and the county pages is going to help people's query posts be more visible and more likely to get a response. In a lot of ways, this is like bringing the community of the forum into the web site itself." Genealogy is the research of family history or ancestry and is one of the more popular hobbies today. The Internet has accelerated interest in family history as the resources necessary for research are easier to access than ever before. NorthCarolinaGenealogy.net specializes in organizing the genealogy resources available for the state of North Carolina and its 100 extant counties. NorthCarolinaGenealogy.net has been around since 2001 providing resources and information on history and genealogy as it relates to North Carolina. The North Carolina Genealogy Query Forum is about to celebrate it's fifth anniversary. JEANNIE FAIRCHILD Reunion 2010.
