    3. From: bobmoore I have Smith Co, TN Payne connections: I'm not a PAYNE researcher but I did run across an amusing name in the 1830 census for Smith Co. TN. There's a fellow listed there by the name of PLEASANT PAYNE. Bobby L. West

    3. Hi Marilyn: I have Smith Co, TN Payne connections: They are: Thomas H. Payne b about 1787 in Rowan Co, NC. Thomas married a Nancy? They had 4 children Goodman (My line), b 1808, William b about 1814, Cynthia b about 1810, and Jiney b about 1812. They all were born in Smith Co, TN. Thomas died in 1817/1818 in Smith Co, TN. His wife Nancy remarried a Sterling Hylton. I can find no place. Would like to know the maiden name of Nancy. Would like to know more about the other 3 children, William, Cynthia and Jiney, as well as Nancy and Sterling Hylton I have this Payne line proven to about 1650. 3. Bobby, I don't know about any of my STEWART family prior to Will Joseph, and very little about him. I am making my 1st trip to Gordonsville tomorrow, nervous that I won't know the first thing about what I should do, and filled with anticipation and excitement that I will finally be in the town where my grandmother and great grandmother were born. So many nice people have given me information through this website. I really appreciate it. I will try to see what I can find about this as a possible connection. 3. I am descended from the Paynes of Smith County. Susan Elizabeth Payne was my gg grandmother. She was the daughter of William J. Payne and Martha Thornton Garrett. She married Alexander Jesse Gregory. William J. was the son of John Payne and Elizabeth Drapers. The Drapers are very numerous in Jackson County. William J. was born in Buckingham Co. Va. I have references and the genealogy further back if you believe it will help. I am leaving today for Kentucky and will not be back home until late Monday night, so I will be able to get you more detail at that time.
