You guys hang in there for a while. I have put my copy of the 1880 microfilm in my portable film reader and I am looking up the 1880 Smith Dist 6 for George & Matilda. Will send out infor as soon as I find them. I'm going to have to see if I can find the image on that because I have his age as 86 in 1880 and the LDS transcription also has his age as 86 in 1880. Yes, I know the census says Jacob was his son but I believe other documents indicate otherwise. I do believe George & Matilda raised Jacob, but I still don't think he is a biological son. Yes the suit was concerning George Boston b. Dec. 20, 1793 children. And yes D. C. (David Crockett) Boston that gave the deposition was George & Matilda s son. George W. Boston, (Jr.?) b. ca 1824 was a son of George's first wife Juda Cope. According to Ray Boston George married Juda Cope in Rowan Co. NC. In Matilda's widows pension she names Juda Cope as George's first wife but I don't think it gives their marriage date. I was told by one contact that he traced this George to Harden Co. IL where he died but I haven't been able to find anything online on him yet. I think one of Cal's Columns says this George went to Illinois but I'm not sure about that, will have to check? You guys are going to make me have to dig out my pension papers! :-) To see exactly what they say. :-) Yes, the David Boston living nearby was George & Matilda's son. He married Delila D. Thomas (Bean) daughter of Chesley B. Thomas and Mariah Jenkins. Delila supposely was first married to a Peter Bean? but I don't have the marriage date. And the only marriage date I find on David Boston and comes from a Family Tree Maker Cd? BOSTON, David C. Marriage Wife: Delila BEAN Marriage Date: 30 Apr 1864 Recorded in: Smith, Tennessee Source: FHL Number 319168 Dates: 1838-1881 I don't find this record in the online marriage transcriptions for Smith Co. I wonder if the query re Cornell should be Cornwell...I find a Dr. J. S. Cornwell married a Louisa Rebecca Cornwell 25 July 1837 in Smith Co. This could be a possibility since you did find your J.S. on the 1840 and married. Melba
Mary, In the 1900 Smith co. census it states that Martha Elizabeths year of birth is 1856 which usually comes right from the horses mouth. May have come right from the horses mouth Rick, but that doesn't mean that it reached the census takers ears correctly! :-) It could even have been a simple thing like the person recording the census transposing the numbers when he wrote the year. 1856 as apposed to 1865. I had another line of BOSTON in Smith County, Jones Boston, who appears in 1811 on Goose Creek. He went to Lauderdale County, Alabama by the 1820's and then later on to the Republic of Texas, where he and his wife died in 1840 in Montgomery County of yellow fever. I have never been able to track him back outside of Tennessee or prove that he was related to George or Christian or some of the other Bostons there. Jones married Nancy Ann Carter, daughter of William Carter from Halifax County, North Carolina. But there do not appear to be any Bostons in early Halifax County, North Carolina. I think he came out of southside Virginia, but I can't make a connection yet. Frankie
Nancy, I know that Ray believed Jacob was George and Matilda's son and I didn't get this information until after Ray died so I didn't have a chance to discuss it with him. Apparently around Aug 26 1889 there was a suit concerning the heirs of George Boston which contains a deposition by D. C. Boston where he testified that "My father had three sons, George, David Crockett, and Christian Boston. George is dead; died leaving one son - he is dead." This would appear to indicate that Jacob was not George's son. Also Stirling and Minnie were listed as Jacob's cousins in 1900 census. If Jacob were brother of Christian (and these were Christian's children) they should be listed as nephew and niece. By being listed as cousins this would indicate to me that they were children of a sibling of Jacob's parent. Has anyone ever seen a copy of Jacob's death certificate? Which may or may not give the correct parents! :-) Mary Knight Ray Spence Boston died June 24, 2003 in Greenbrier, Tennessee. His wife is Polly Blyth Farrar. Ray's parents were William Pickering Boston (b 1894 - d 1955), and Mary Annie Hesson (b 1897 - d 1937). Ray's grandparents were Jacob Boston (b 1873 - d 1941) and Margaret Evelyn Hesson (b 1868 - d 1953). Ray's great grandparents were George Boston and Matilda Parkhurst. They had a son Christian Boston who married Margaret Evelyn Hesson and Martha Hesson. Ray shows that Christian and Martha Hesson Boston had children: Stirling, Minnie Bell, and Alice. He doesn't show any children for Margaret Evelyn Hesson and Christian, although they could have had some. All the above information Ray passed on to me before he died. Gary here's what I have for John Alexander Jenkins b. March 31, 1859 d. ? aft Sept 1923. Married March 20, 1887 Smith Co. to Minerva C. Hall no dates or parents for her. I have never found him in the census with his wife and I don't know what happened to her. Children I have listed are Mary b. ?, Etter b. ?, John Marshall b. ca 1892, & Bell b. 1894. John Marshall Jenkins married Tiny B. Hix and had at least one son John Harlie Jenkins (no dates). John Harlie Jenkins had a son John E. Jenkins who was living in Bowling Green KY in 2000. He contacted me about John Alexander and Minerva Hall Jenkins. He also could not find any info on Minerva or what happen to her. Here are my other notes on John Alexander Jenkins. 1910 Macon Jenkins John 39 b. TN married 23yrs Jenkins Marshal 18 b. TN son Jenkins Bell 16 b. TN dau. Census States married 23 years but does not say widowed and does not list his wife, did she leave him? I don't have 1900 census info for his family. Additional information on John A. Jenkins is found in Pension records of Jefferson Jenkins. John apparently applied for a pension disability in September of 1923. Affidavits attesting to the fact that John was disabled and unable to work and that he had relied on his mother and other family members for support. Martha, his mother, has apparently died before this application. John apparently had this condition from a childhood. Affidavit from Dr. Frank B. Clark stating John was suffering from "ankylosis of the spine and shoulder joints, as well the cartilage of the chest, the condition is due to chronic arthritis. The applicant has lateral cervical curvature of the spine, the dorsal vertebras extend forward while the lumbar vertebras extend backward. The applicant is very much emaciated? and week which with the above conditions renders him totally unable to do manual labor. " Another affidavit from Dr. G. W. Herod states that "John suffered from Spinal Meningitis at the age of 16 which resulted in curvature of the spine and finally in anchilosis holding him bent forward about 45 degrees rendering him incapable of manual labor and totally illiterate without resources to maintain himself." Other affidavits contained in this file from John's brother and sisters and other relatives attesting to the fact that he cannot work. One affidavit states he has a surviving brother that is deaf and a surviving sister that is blind. There is no mention of a wife in these papers concerning John. Gary, the only Ezekiel Jenkins (b.Apr. 15, 1853 John's brother) I have besides John Alexanders brother is Ezekiel Walker Jenkins b. Nov. 26, 1879 d. Dec 26, 1922 married May 2, 1906 to Fannie B. Kemp (No dates or parents for her).Ezekial Walker Jenkins was son of William Chesley "Bill Sam" Jenkins & Jane Boston. Mary Knight Mary (& others)..... This is probable! The time frame is correct. Christian and Martha (Hesson) Boston married Jan 5, 1884 and W Sterling was b. Nov 28, 1884. Then they would have had Alice in 1886. Alice also died 1886. They then would have had Minnie Bell, Sep 1, 1887 and Mamie in 1888. Mamie died 1888 as did her mother; Prob from complications of Childbirth?? Sue G In a message dated 7/15/05 6:23:37 A.M. Nancy, I hate to argue the point here, but I don't think that Jacob "Jake" Boston can possibly be the son of George and Matilda?? George was first married to Juda Cope abt 1820 and had children born between 1821 and 1836. Juda died in 1844 and he then married Matilda Parkhurst on April 17, 1845. They had children born between 1847 and 1861. If they had Jacob, he wasn't born until 1874 and Matilda would have been 46, which is not impossible, but unlikely that much time took place between the birth of Christian in 1861 and Jacob in 1874?? I just think we have SOMETHING missing here?? Sue G, Lebanon, TN In a message dated 7/14/05 11:44:24 P.M. Hello Melba, Thanks for the help. I had that but still appreciate the help. I have been to Lafayette, TN with my husband but, as always, time was limited and we did not get to sightsee. Thanks again. Sincerely, Jean Hiett sjhiett@sbcglobal.net
Hello Rob, John and Cynthia Hiatt were on the 1830 census with a child of 5-10 years p. 39, #284. In 1840 they again were listed with a son 5-10 years and a son 15 - 20 p.73 middle district. In 1850 John is listed as a blacksmith with wife Cynthia and a son John, Jr. age 19, #884 North of Cumberland River and East of C F River. Older son Joseph Hiatt has his own family - wife Sally, and children John M, Cyrus, and Martha E and is shown in entry #885. According to the 1850 census John Hiatt was born in VA and was 55 years old. Cynthia was born in TN and was 52 years old. I have this also in a family Bible and have read the will and inventory of John Hiatt. Hiatt was spelled in different ways. It ended up as Hiett. The family lived in Pleasant Shade and then eventually in the Lafayette area of Macon County. My husband's family moved to Texas.
