    1. Re N.C. Land Grants to Tennessee, etc.
    2. Eldon Wilkins
    3. I am getting a lot of requests for look-ups and still ongoing...and will continue to look for you. This morning I made a phone call to the Nashville Archives to get some information that I know soon someone will be inquiring about. Can one still order an actual copy of the Warrants and Grants? The answer is "yes". Presently the fee to search the microfilm (even though you have all the information) is $10 for cost of photocopy and $15 for certified if out of state. If in state of Tennessee the photocopy is $5.00 and $5.00 extra for a certified copy. The address from which to request these would be: Tennessee State Library and Archives 403 Seventh Avenue North Nashville, Tennessee 37243-0312 (Phone 615-746-2764) When ordering you would need to give all the information about that Grant/Warranty as I have sent out. I inquired if there would be different information than what I find in the book. The librarian said she had not looked at this for a while but felt sure it would give no other information for genealogical purposes than that found in the Land Grant Book. The Librarian (a very nice lady) requested that I put their website out to you. Are you aware that you can go into a state-wide index and can request by email pre 1861 marriages for example at no charge? Charges would be only if you wish a copy sent you. And...you can get a copy of a surname list sent you for only a $5 fee? Here is the site: www.Tennessee.gov\tsla For the link above go to about the middle of the page and click on Local History Links. This will take you to services available and the Local History and Genealogy site. Find Research Services and the link to "Services Available by mail". You can google " Counties of Tennessee Maps". I find these sites very interesting and just "playing around" with them sometimes gives me some wonderful starts. You will also find on this website the information about the Family History Center in Salt Lake. This is a wonderful source for finding out more about an ancestor search. These files have been made up by both member and nonmember from records sent in by individuals. True, you may find some errors. Don't let those (or any in any census, etc. you find) bother you. Just consider it another source to continue on with your search. There is a lot to be found here and I would be happy to "phone walk" anyone through it to help you learn how to use it fully. For those thinking they need to go to Salt Lake to find information, please use this tool first. I find it most helpful to add only a surname in the Search mode and only the link United States (do not put in Tennessee, or another state name). Then you can scroll through all those names. Putting in a state may cut down the information you are looking for as someone may have listed that individual as by their middle name when you have entered in their first name, etc. This search will bring up any other spelling variations of the surname as well. I hope this information is helpful to each of you. Melba

    1. The Evetts Clan
    2. Ernest or Joan Seitz
    3. So, folks, I am pretty new at this. I've been watching and reading all the superior details flowing across the internet on everyone's family but mine. Nobody seems to be a part of the Evetts clan from Smith County. Apparently we can track to George Evetts 1738-1800 in Burke, NC.....although it is possible that it might be Joseph Sr or Moses instead. Our infamous family Texas historian and history writer, J. Evetts Haley, votes for George. His kids were Samuel Givens Evetts, maybe William, maybe Thomas Franklin, maybe Joseph. Samuel's kids were Margaret Evetts who married a John Foley, James Harrison Evetts (Sam Houston's blacksmith and fought in the San Jacinto War in Texas Independence, William B Evetts who left for Missouri and Illinois, Thomas Franklin Evetts and Samuel Givens Evetts, Jr. who fought in the Battle of Bexar (San Antonio) which preceded the Battle of the Alamo by about three months. Margaret, Jim, Bill, Frank, and Sam Jr. were all born in Smith County. So was Samuel Givens Evetts Sr. James Harrison Evetts's son, William Caperton Evetts, fathered 16 children, 14 of which lived to adulthood and out of those about 10 were natural born artists. William spent his time basically as a gunslinger in early Texas history in Coryell County, Texas around the Temple area. If anyone knows any ties to the Evetts family, I surely would appreciate hearing from you. Part of our tracing problem is that Evetts has been spelled Avitts, Avetts, Evett, Avett, Avitt, Abbitts, Abbetts, Ebbetts, Ebbitts, Evits, and Avits...sometimes all in the same family.

    3. 1. Peter Turney assigned land to Mary Allen 1784
    2. Mary Miller
    3. Melba - thank you so much. I will have to look at this info and talk to some of the other Turney researchers...... This Peter Turney died soon after he wrote his will 29 March 1804.....he was one of the first magistrates of Smith Co TN....the court sometimes met at his house outside Dixon Springs. He is mentioned often in Cal's column. I descend from his brother Henry Turney who died 1843 Dekalb Co TN - he lived on Clear Forks near the Dekalb / Cannon Co line, he began buying land there 1802-1803 when it was Smith County. Peter (d 1804) was the father of 3 lawyer sons: Samuel - White co TN lawyer James - first wife Sarah?, second wife Mary Ransom he married in Illinois where he had moved around 1818, was Attorney General there, moved 1860s to Texas. Hopkins Lacey Turney - TN senator and father of Gov of TN Peter Turney. Peter Turney (d 1804) was married to Francis Haines - and we have not been able to find her family.....Peter was a surveyor, was one of the surveyors on Armstrong's survey ordered by NC on land which today is in TN (1783).....so Peter had land all over Eastern and Middle TN.... I have tried to figure out connection to Allen family - if perhaps one of the females was born an Allen. My direct line Peter Turney b 1795, died 1842 AR was married to an Adams, he was the nephew of Peter d 1804....and he began the tradition of using Allen as middle name for sons. I have of course wondered if the wife of Henry (d 1843 Dekalb) could have been an Allen.....or what the connection might be. Perhaps it is to the Haines/ Haynes family.....I just have not been able to put it together. It might even go all the way back to 1760s in Shenandoah Co VA since an Allen family lived near the Turneys. There might be a connection to Kentucky..... someone sent me this: THE HIDDEN REVOLUTIONARY WAR LAND GRANTS IN THE TENNESSEE RESERVATION Davidson County Warrant: Grant: Assigned to: Page 2123 Peter Turney Mary Allen C439 5261 Samuel Smithson Peter Turney D32 Smith County 5261 Samuel Smithson Henry Turney C235, 236, 237 Peter Turney was a Rev. War Vet.....he was at Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774, and is documented as being at Boyd's Creek, perhaps at King's Mountain in Oct 1780. He was referred to in Smith Co as "Captain" - he was often out with militia on expeditions at various times.....his grave outside Dixon Springs has a Rev War marker......now why he gave his 640 acres to Mary Allen? He probably owed her money so signed over the land as payment, he often did this. He used various pieces of land the same as money, his estate was a mess and not settled for many years because these records are scattered all over eastern and middle TN..... On the Allen name......Shenandoah Co VA 1788 Reuben Allen married Magdaline Skeen.... John Skeen and wife Ingabo sold 93 acres on east side of North River Shenandoah to Joseph Hawkins 22 August 1762, sold 165 acres to Joseph Hawkins 18 August 1762, sold the remaining 100 acres to Peter Turney 21 August 1762. This Peter Turney was bp 1710/11 Switzerland and was the father of Peter Turney (d 1804 Smith Co TN) and Henry Turney (d 1843 Dekalb Co Tn). The Turneys were in PA from 1741 to about 1749 when they moved to near Edinburg VA, about 1762 they moved a bit south to Red Banks / Hawkinstown area. Their next door neighbors there were Abraham Bird and Joseph Hawkins. Peter Turney Jr (d 1804), brother Henry, sisters Eve Teeter and Mary Beeler moved by early 1774 to the Abingdon / Bristol area. Peter Jr and Henry were just over the VA line into what became TN. This is about time Peter Jr began his surveying.....Peter and Henry had land all over - about 1783 registered land near Bean's Station on German Creek.....Henry 1780 was at Ft Nasborough on the Cumberland, 1788 built a house down road from brother Peter Jr, in Hartsville TN, then to Hawkins Co where he was on 1790 tax list, 1803-1804 he was in Smith Co on Clear forks where he died 1843. In Preemptors book by Irene Griffey: Jan 3, 1783 Henry Turney obtained a pre empt. of 640 acres of land lying on the so. side of Harpeth River about a mile above the Clay Lick....improvement marked on a tree thus H T for compliment. so.....Henry Turney Jan 1783 has 640 acres on Harpeth River.....1784 Peter Turney assigned his 640 acres on south side of Big Harpeth to Mary Allen. The info on Peter Turney should also be in Preemptors book - but it is not.....just the info on brother Henry. For some reason Peter did not register his land on Harpeth river in late 1782-1783 when Anthony bledsoe, Isaac Shelby and Absalom Tatum were appointed by NC to survey boundaries of the military reservation and settle the grants of people already living there. Instead, it seems Peter Turney's grant was registered as Rev War grant while brother Henry was registered as a preemptor. This is what is so hard about TN early land records...... anyway - thank you so much for the info. 3. Melba, Again, thanks so much for your willingness to help. I first said I would like the Thomas info. On second thought, if there is an indication of anyone who came from Virginia, I would like to know about that. Most of the Williams in Smith County (I believe) came from North Carolina. Any Williams who came from Virginia might be significant for me. I will be happy to pay any costs that you might incur. 3. Thanks for the listing. I am glad to hear that you have done some Williams research in the area. My Williams line as I will outline below, A. W. (Anderson) Williams b. ca 1811 in Virginia was married to Sarah A. (some say her maiden name was Adams) ca 1836. Their oldest son, Thomas Arthur Williams was born in Mississippi about 1840 (where they were on the 1840 census). Samuel E. Williams was born ca 1841 (also in Miss.) They returned to Tennessee where the following children were born: Thaddeus E. Williams - b. abt. 1845 Robert Charles Williams - b. abt. 1846 By 1850, they were in Franklin Co., IL, where the following children were born: Sarah Jane Williams - b. abt. 1848 James R. Williams - b. abt 1850 Matilda Williams - b. abt. 1851 Mary Williams - b. abt. 1854 By 1860, they were in Dixon Springs, Smith County, TN where A.W. owned a mill. During the Civil War, the 2nd and 3rd oldest sons were killed or died by other means. In 1870 the family is still in Dixon Springs. John Williams is also listed b. abt. 1863 In 1880 the family had relocated to Weatherford, Parker County, TX. Sarah (A.W.'s wife) was there with her son, James R., and his wife and family, but A.W. is not. She is buried in Weatherford, but he is not. I assume that he died in Tennessee, but I can't prove it. Here is the thing. There were two A.W. Williams about the same age living in Smith County at the same time. There were two Anderson Williams at the same time, but I don't know that they were both A.W.'s. The othere A.W. Williams I believe was from North Carolina, whereas mine was from Virginia. Since my Anderson W. Williams named his oldest son Thomas Arthur, I have toyed with the idea that the older Thomas Williams (I think his middle initial was "A" - memory could be failing) who had a mill in Smith County earlier could have been his father. If there is anything that could help me in the Thomas land grants, I would appreciate the information. Thanks for your assistance, and if anything above rings a bell, please let me know. 3. Mary...I had wondered if Peter had a daughter who married an Allen. Do you have any history of James who went to Texas in 1860? Did he return to Tennessee? I have been attempting to collect information from Smith/Jackson Co. families who left during this period and went to Texas (some to Grayson Co, Texas). Some stayed for a short period of time; returned to Tenn.; some "dropped off" in other states on their way home and did not return to Tenn.; some remained in Texas. The gist of what I have learned is that Texas was a cattle state and our Tennessee farmers were not greeted well. What was it, and who spread the word that Texas "might be the place to go to"??? 3. Dear Mary, There are listings for Alexander Blair 41, 55; James Blair 33, 40 (2), 50; John Blair 10, 41, 46, 89 (2), 108, 122; and Thomas Blair 53. These will take some time to transcribe as there are so many of them. I have to read each entry with a magnifying glass as the writing is so small. (We are in the process of a storm and I may have to turn my computer off for a period.) I will list entries for Alexander and Thomas now as a starter for you. (Please refer to previous email where I listed how to read the entries.) Alexander BLAIR 41, 55 (two entries-both in Section I) 1936 - Alexander Blair - 200 - 1787 - Greene County - On the North side of Holstein River 2643 - Alexander Blair - 150 - 1790 - Hawkins County - joining William Smith's lines BLAIR 53 I BELIEVE I HAVE FOUND AN INDEX ERROR - It lists within the index a James Blair 32, 40 (2), 50. By my own accident/error I had written down pg 53 for Thomas. A Thomas, of course, was not there. I then went back to the Index and found a James BLAIS pg 53. I believe this name could well be James Blair, not Blais and am giving this information below for you to do your own research. Index name James Blais, page 53, Section l 1543 - James Blais - 200 -1791 - Greene County - on the big meadow Thomas BLAIR 103, 122 (Index) Entry from page 103 1065 - Thomas BLAIR - 640 - 1789 - Davidson - on the South side of Cumberland River (This entry is in Section III. the date of 1789 could be mistaken for 1784 but as I looked at the preceding page listed 1789 and careful scrutiny feel the correct date if 1789.) Thomas BLAIR (from pg 122, Section V) This is typed as transcribed as follows. BLAIR, Thomas : III - 1065, assigned by heirs of George Adcock. BLAIR, Thomas; III - 375, assigned by heirs of William Bennett, Senr. Pvt.; III 390, assigned by Hance Pettegrew, Sgt.; III - 1335, assigned by John Redding, Pvt. (So as not confuse you, there are 3 land assignments herein.) ALL above entried for Thomas Blair appear in Appendix "A" which includes pages 119-160. If a name only appears in Appendix A it means the person did not hold a grant in Tennessee, but assigned his warrant for military service to someone else, and the grant was issued in the purchaser s name. If the soldier took up his own land the entry in Appendix A appears as: Ex: Ashe, Samuel, Capt; III - 27; and lastly, If the soldier assigned his land, the entry in the Appendix appears as: Ex: Abbett, John; see Bradley, James Bradley; III 4753, assigned by John Abbett Sgt. A reminder is given that NOT every N. C. Revolutionary Soldier is mentioned, only those who had presented their warrants for payment prior to July 1791 are listed. There is a note that says that 2,227 other warrants had been issued, for which grants HAD NOT YET BEEN MADE. In some cases the rank of the soldier was not given; the rank appears after the soldiers's name wherever it was clearly stated. After grant No. 1369 the names and numbers in the grant book did not correspond to those in this list. Since the time of the authors research a thorough restudy of the Land records was made by staff in Tennessee Archives IT IS POSSIBLE THAT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE HOLDERS OF THE WARRANTS BASED ON THESE GRANTS IS NOW AVAILABLE. The first page or so of the Original Warrant book is missing and Grants referring to these first warrants COULD NOT be checked or elaborated upon. FYI - I went into the Index to see if I could locate where William Smith's property was and wouldn't you know it? There are oodles of Smiths, seven for William Smith. Not knowing which William it was/is and not following this Blair line would make it difficult for me to know. Now you have two counties to search for Alexander. SECTION I - General purchase grants - "An estimate of the lands granted by the State of North Carolina within the Western territory ceded by the said State to the United States of America," The grants issuing under this heading were all known as Purchase Grants and were paid for in cash or scrip or certificates. They are located from Washington County to the Mississippi river and from duck River Ridge south to the State border. 3326 grants are listed. The Revolutionary Soldiers here cannot be ascertained, for their grants were purchased with the scrip issued in payment for their services. It is believed the first grant listed under each County or District heading may be considered as grant Number 1, such as Washington County Grant No. 1, Sullivan County, Greene County, Hawkins County, Eastern District, North Carolina Grants, etc. The Revolutionary Soldiers here cannot be ascertained, for their grants were purchased with the scrip issued in payment for their services. FYI - Re the Preface of this book the authors, Betty Goff Cook Cartwright and Lillian Johnson Gardiner this book was given the printers in November 1958. And I just noted that my copy is autographed by both authors and the place/date is Memphis, Tennessee 1958. This little book is string/cord bound, its pages yellowed. It was a purchase made by my father and was given me some time prior to his death. It might be helpful to some of our readers to remind them that this book is of immense help to the family researcher when looking for earlier records of Tennessee kinfolk. We know that the 1790 census records of the Western Territory (Tennessee) were burned as were the 1800, as were the 1810 with the exception of one county only, that being Rutherford. Therefore, this Land Grant information becomes our substitute for a 1790 census of the part of North Carolina which became Tennessee in 1796. (Our thanks to Betty and Lillian. To accomplish this with no computer and such tiny handwriting must have taken many, many hours.) Melba PS Would love to know more about your Hughes line. I have one in Smith Co. (The above has taken about 2 hours...will finish later for James & John). -------Original Message------- From: Mary Hughes Date: 08/23/05 05:33:32 To: TNSMITH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TNSMITH] Re: Land Grant Look up Dear Melba; Would you please look at your land grant book for any Blairs.
