    3. Well, that is the problem. The only Roark I know about (and I have not been able to find anything else) is James A. Roark - b - 1821 - Chickamanga, Walker Co, GA - d - before 1860 - probably in Walker Co., GA, also - married to Caroline Martha Mullis. They had children: Charles Henry H., William W., John W., Wylie G.P., Martha A., Mary Elizabeth, Mathena Amendy and James A. between 1843 and 1858 - all born in GA except for the last child who was born in TN. I have hit a brick wall, and can't find anything else about him. I don't know any siblings or parents. I was just hoping that someone would know about them. I have put queries out, but nothing - I guess he just vanished. Oh well. I'll talk to you later. Both families lived on Bluff Creek and Dyers Branch in Smith Co. It is thought that Martha A. Sadler who married Daniel Wilkerson was a Clark descendant. Her parents are thought to be Thomas Sadler and Mary Nancy Clark Sadler of Bluff Creek. There was a close connection between the children of Leonard Clark, my ancestor, and Mary Nancy Clark Sadler. She raised some of Leonard Clark's younger children. There are more connections to the Wilkerson family. James Monroe Wilkerson married Martha Scurlock, sister of Eliza Jane Scurlock who married Thomas Anderson Clark, my gggrandfather. Jim

    3. Dear Bobby, No, I am not burned out but before long 1/2 the book will be "out there". Ha. I am happy to help move along any cause for our Smith Countians! There is neither an entry for Goodner/Guetner/Roark/Ruark/etc. I carefully scrutinized for any variation of spellings. There are entries for Jacob Gardner, Demsey Gardner, James Gardner, Nathan Gardner...that is as close to these as I can get. As I understand this history there were many who filed for land grants and never received them. Apparently there is some information re the Cumberland settlers "vividly discussed" within Ramsey's Annals, Putnam' Middle Tennessee and Haywoods History ot Tennessee...telling of the early struggles of these people to hold on in spite of adverse conditions...a matter of equity. Further it is stated that these people thought at first that they were in Virginia, but in May 1780 when a party was surveying the Virginia-North Carolina line they found they were actually in North Carolina. "On arrival in the settlement they had scattered far and wide, locating the lands of their choice and making improvements, before they realized their lack of responsible law and protective forts, then in 1781 and 1782 numbers of them had to leave for the protection of their families." History buffs out there - would be interesting to learn more about all this.
