    1. Re: [TNSMITH] Land Grants beginning with Mc
    2. Eldon Wilkins
    3. Dear Sue, The book is titled NORTH CAROLINA LAND GRANTS IN TENNESSEE 1778 - 1791. There is a copy in the Nashville Archives...you may even find a copy (or a microfilm copy) in a library near you, or you may be able to interlibrary loan copy from the Archives if your library there has this program...it never hurts to check. Be sure to take a good, large magnifying glass with you...you cannot read it without one clearly. The book is not even 8 x 10...it is about 1 " thick and about 7" x 9". Personally I do not believe I would order a microfilm copy, but it would depend upon the strength of the film reader. The print really is tiny...there are some pages that have smudges on them, but very few...so far I have been able to make out all names. I believe a few may have been confused as to what this book contains...It is simple....a listing of those Revolutionary War Soldiers that came about when North Carolina issued Military Warrants for land as payment to many of her soldiers. There were some payments made in scrip in which the soldiers used to purchase land. As these warrants, numbered consecutively , were surrendered for payment land grants were issued with a different series of numbers (also consecutive.) Therefore the Grant Book number differs from the warrant numbers. (As to if there would be a listing of those paid in scrip I do not have this information.) The list in this book gives the Grant Book number. The Warrant number is found on the face of the Grant itself. Comparison with the warrant shows whether or not the Grant issued to the soldier, his heir, or to someone to whom he had assigned his Warrant. (See a previous email where I explained this in more detail.) Many have written me stating they were sure there were some of their families might have been there, as they well may have been. This paragraph may help in understanding that. "The fact that a man received a military warrant is definite proof of his service in the Revolutionary War. THE SOLDIERS WHO SOLD THEIR WARRANTS PROBABLY NEVER CAME TO TENNESSEE." I look up a name under the Index and go to all those pages. You have seen over and over reference to Appendix A. That appendix as well as the Index is typed. Again...finding a name listed ONLY in Appendix A means that the person DID NOT OWN a grant of land in Tennessee, for the period covered, BUT THAT HE DID HAVE A MILITARY WARRANT (thus meaning that man did serve in the Rev. War.) And the authors made a statement of apology for any errors that may be found...we are all human...if it is necessary for one to prove they had an ancestor in the Rev. War and they think they did, then they will need to work through a different channel to prove it...the results of this book are great in my opinion and a project I don't think I would have taken upon myself. I cannot imagine the hours these girls took to complete it. Again...the above is not to be a lecture...but more clarification to all those who have been following this website recently. It is certainly giving me a desire to go back and restudy some of the history of that time period. Catch ya later Sue.
