Does anyone know of one who researches in Smith Co TN? I am researching the James Upton line of Smith Co. James was born in 1750 in Ireland...and was listed on the 1820 census of Smith Co. His wife's first name was Nancy who was born in 1790 in NC. I only know of two of their children: ....Lucy Upton b. 1816 in TN m. James Gwaltney ....Edward Upton b. 1817 in TN m. Elizabeth __________ His son, William Cullen Upton is my husband's gr grandfather. James and Nancy Upton are buried in the Gwaltney Cemetery about 1/2 mile south of Hickman, Smith Co. on Reba Gwaltney's farm. (James 1750 to 1826 and Nancy (1790 to 1856) Thanks to John and Retta Waggoner there are photos of the cemetery and a list of those buried there!! Among the things I am interested in finding is: ....if James Upton and Nancy Upton left wills/probate files... ....if the land where James and Nancy Upton are buried had been at one time their land.... and if so when was it sold. Perhaps it had been passed down to their daughter Lucy Upton Gwaltney who is also buried there along with her husband James who died in 1839. Would appreciate knowing of someone who researches in the area and their fee. Thanks.... Joan Waldrop _mjowaldrop@aol.com_ (mailto:mjowaldrop@aol.com) .
Thanks Melba, Yes, I got it. Sue Gregory, 706 Scarlett Place Lebanon, TN, 37087-3263

Melba.... Would you please check and see if you can locate a land grant issued to James Upton. James Upton was listed on the 1820 census of Smith Co.....he died in 1826 and is buried in the Gwaltney Cemetery south of Hickman, Smith Co. TN. If you run across other Uptons in this time frame, would you please list them also? The time that you have taken in looking up so many requests is appreciated by so many....and I am just one of the "many". Thanks again.... Joan mjowaldrop@aol.com
Thanks for your kind words Marcy. I carefully check the B Index and there are no variations of any kind of Baughman. Sorry. Jackson Washington Hargis (1815-1897) son of William and Hannah Howell Hargis, first wife was Mary Jane Caroline "Calline" Uhles (1819-1859) daughter of Richard and Lucy Tuck Uhles. I am descended from Jackson and Calline Uhles Hargis. I am also descended from John Hargis (1797-1882) son of William and Hannah Howell Hargis and his wife Permelia Uhles (aunt to above Calline). I am trying to trace a couple generations of each of their children and their descendants, hence the interest in Dixon Dyer and wife Letha Aqulla Hargis. Thanks Sharon Tabor
Actually I am connected to all the Woodards in the Smith and surrounding county areas as they are all from the children of John and Tabitha Woodard who migrated to Smith co. from N.C. about 1848 without John who died in N.C. They had a son Jordan Woodard who married Nancy Overstreet and they had a son Henry Douglas Woodard who with Eviline B. Kent had a son named William Alfred (Willie) Woodard who married Emmaline Sircy and their son Henry (Jeff) Woodard married Nellie Mai Overstreet, who had a son Named John Lee Woodard who married Mattie Lucille Silcox and they are my parents. But if you are a Woodard or descended from a Woodard in that area, I guarantee you are related. Nice to meet you cousin. Rick Woodard

Hi Melba.....you are a mind reader too.....My name is Gary Bell and I have been watching all of these emails flying back and forth.....and thought I would just keep quiet until I understood what was going on.....Since my family names in Smith County are Hughes, Ward, Mangrum and Grissom had not been mentioned...I was just about to email you and ask what the grants were all about.....Now you have answered that question very completely.....It is so great of you to check all these requests for people. Can I ask that you check Drury Grissom. I believe that my Hughes, Ward and Mangrum men came from Virginia and then to Tennessee.
