    3. Dear Larry, One has no way to know where these people were from. It contains a name in the Index, etc. There two entries of HINDS, Joseph (3 pgs) and Levy one page. I am going to have to cut back on these looks-ups. If I send the list of given names and you feel it is your lineage that would be most helpful, however, but to do every name for that surname is getting to be too involved. Sometimes there are 35 or so references to a name. The pages of the book are getting very worn. If Joseph and/or Levy fit in, let me know. Thanks. 2. Mary Knight
    3. Your welcome Joan, Apparently James Upton deeded his land to his 3 sons in a deed dated Mar. 6, 1819. Sons James Edward & Reuben. To his daughters he deeded slaves and personal property. Daughters Mary, Nancy, Caty, Elizabeth & Lucy. This was probably what is known as a deed of gift. My husbands Knight ancestor made a deed of gift of his land, salves and etc to his children before his death. Which was good because he left know will. :-) James Upton's will in 1825 made this 1819 deed null and void. Prior to Nancy Upton's (his second wife) death son Reuben died leaving no wife or issue and son James died leaving a Nelson and Elizabeth Smith. If you contact the Smith Co. H&G society ask them also if they can get you a copy of the 1819 deed. If they can't contact the Register of Deeds Turner Building, 122 Turner High Circle Carthage, TN 37030 (615) 735-1760 http://www.smithcountychamber.org/govt.htm Call them first and see what it will cost you for a copy of the deed. You need to ask for Carol Gibbs if she is still County register. She was very helpful to me when I was there and was the only one that could copy some of the very old deed books because they are so fragile. I have the chancery info typed and will send it to you shortly. Also, if you want actual copies of these Chancery records you can probably ask the H&G society about those also two see if they can get them from the courthouse. If they don't get those for you you can simply go to your nearest library that has a microfilm reader and have them order the microfilm of the Chancery records covering the dates you need on interlibrary loan from the Tennessee State Archives. Mary Knight Hi Mary..... Thanks so much for answering my e-mail. I am looking forward to receiving the info you have regarding James Upton and family. Thanks too, for letting me know where I may obtain a copy of James' will.... Joan

    3. but just because they came from Virginia, they still might be in there. Peter Turney Jr is mentioned - land assigned to Mary Allen - and he was out of Shenandoah Co Va about 1774 to eastern TN. He is documented as being at Battle of Point Pleasant 1774 and also Dec 1780 at Boyd's Creek.....possible he was a foot soldier at King's Mountain in Oct 1780....in other words, his Rev War service was for militia out of what became TN but was NC at the time. So being from VA does not mean he would not have gotten a NC land grant for Rev War service. If a man was already IN Tn during Rev War and served (even if from somewhere else such as VA, MD, etc.) he would have gotten a NC land grant for Rev War. Just depends on when he was where...... 3. Seems we are all learning more and more about these Grants. True, one could have been from Virginia...If a surname does appear in the Index I send out the information requested. For clarification the grant number and information given within this book does not give one any indication of where they came from, or where they served. All the information I gave Gary came from the land grant book. 2. Mary Knight
    3. Joan, I found some information on James Upton's family in my Smith Co. TN Chancery Book by Partlow. I will type it up for you and send it to your e-mail as it is copyrighted material. But it does appear James left a will dated 8 Nov 1825. Then he died in 1825 or 1826, it says. If you contact the Historical & Genealogical Society, I'm pretty sure they can get you a copy of the will. Not sure what they charge for copies now but I don't think its very much. You can find their contact information here. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsmith/hg/ Mary Knight Does anyone know of one who researches in Smith Co TN? I am researching the James Upton line of Smith Co. James was born in 1750 in Ireland...and was listed on the 1820 census of Smith Co. His wife's first name was Nancy who was born in 1790 in NC. I only know of two of their children: ....Lucy Upton b. 1816 in TN m. James Gwaltney ....Edward Upton b. 1817 in TN m. Elizabeth __________ His son, William Cullen Upton is my husband's gr grandfather. James and Nancy Upton are buried in the Gwaltney Cemetery about 1/2 mile south of Hickman, Smith Co. on Reba Gwaltney's farm. (James 1750 to 1826 and Nancy (1790 to 1856) Thanks to John and Retta Waggoner there are photos of the cemetery and a list of those buried there!! Among the things I am interested in finding is: ....if James Upton and Nancy Upton left wills/probate files... ....if the land where James and Nancy Upton are buried had been at one time their land.... and if so when was it sold. Perhaps it had been passed down to their daughter Lucy Upton Gwaltney who is also buried there along with her husband James who died in 1839. Would appreciate knowing of someone who researches in the area and their fee. Thanks.... 3. I went to the Overton County web site (Overton Co. Tn gen web) and found it quite interesting. (Previously had been there but at the time no interest in the war information.) It might be well for those of you who have stated you knew you had a family member in the Revolutionary War but I found no listing to go to this site. There is a 35 page listing of Tennessee State Society Of The Sons of the American Revolution found there (www.sar.org/tnssar) I do not know where or from what this list was taken from but do not feel it was from the N.C. Land Grant Book I have as there are missing names. There is also an article on American Revolution; and Virginia state lists of the Revolutionary Soldiers of Virginia. (This is a listing of Union Civil War Vets and their wives that were on the 1890 census of Pickett, Fentress, & Clay counties. It is alphabatized). Enjoy the journey. Melba

    2. Hey Rick, I found your tree posting on Ancestry.com. I think there is a "Mis" connection on the children of Jurden Lemuel and Nancy W [Overstreet] Woodard?? You have listed Joseph Woodard, b. 1815 who is a BROTHER to Jurden Lemuel as his SON?? Sue Gregory, 706 Scarlett Place Lebanon, TN, 37087-3263
