    2. There was a George B.[Or H. ] Jenkins from the 1900 census that was son of Leroy [Lee] Jenkins. Lee also had daughter Betty that married Morgan Gregory. I knew I had heard the name Cissy Ballow. I asked my mom today if she knew her. She said she did. She said when she was a little girl Herlin Jenkins and wife Cissy lived near them . They had daughter named Cora [I think she said] .Cora called Morgan Gregory "uncle Morgan" Now the dates of his birth and marriage doesn't match. Herald

    1. Re: [TNSMITH] Research in Smith County
    2. John, here are a few ways to confirm what you're looking for and where it's located. I've numbered them here, and also below. 1) Contact Sue Maggart-Petty, head of the Smith County Archives. See below. (Sorry for the extraneous info. I can't seem to pull out just the part on her. 2) Go to the website URL below, where a listing of all microfilmed Smith County records is listed, including the records of the Loose Records Project. 3) 3) When you visit TSLA or the Archives in Smith County, look for these volumes. They evidently were prepared "in-house," so copies can't be purchased--so far as I'm aware (I'd surely like copies if they can be bought!). You'll be disappointed to find the arrangement used for the index to the loose records. All names from earliest to ca 1930 are arranged alphabetically. (That part is good.) However, there's no date attached. And, when you have three different Williams lines from Smith County (as I do), the pages and pages of Williams entries--all with no dates, it's daunting to contemplate searching all those packets, not knowing until I wind the reel to the specific packet number the date of the record (anywhere from 1806-1930). And, the packet numbers don't help in this regard. The number can be #1 and still be a 1930s packet. Best wishes on your trip, Gale Williams Bamman, CG 1) Archival Programs and Services Archives Directory > S-V ____________________________________ _A-B_ (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/aps/directory/a-b.htm) _C-F_ (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/aps/directory/c-f.htm) _G-H_ (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/aps/directory/g-h.htm) _I-L_ (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/aps/directory/i-l.htm) _M-N_ (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/aps/directory/m-n.htm) _O-R_ (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/aps/directory/o-r.htm) _S-V_ (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/aps/directory/s-v.htm) _W-Z_ (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/aps/directory/w-z.htm) Sevier County Preservation of Records Department Brad Cannon, Archivist/ Records Manager 125 Court Avenue Ste. 201E Sevierville , TN 37862 Phone: (865) 774 3627 Shelby County Archives John Dougan, Archivist 150 Washington Memphis , TN 38103 Phone: (901) 545-4351 Smith County Archives Sue Maggart-Petty, Certified Archives Manager P.O. 3. John, My suggestion would be that you phone the Nashville Archives prior to leaving town and get information from them. I have always found them very helpful and it is time-saving to be "armed" of the information, etc rather than appear when a lot of patrons are there and then a lot of waiting...been there, done that. You might also phone the Carthage Library. It has been my understanding that records that Sue M. Petty and others have compiled are also placed there. 2. John, I have found that most of the recoords from Smith County that still exist are on microfilm - you just have to know what to look for. Have you done a search at the Smith County website for your names? I know that there are many references to the VADEN's in the Administrator's receipt books, and I seem to remember references to the other names as well - STROTHER, SULLIVAN. There are now 4 parts of the Administrator Receipt books on the website, and the Vaden estate has been in each one. I was at the courthouse several years ago and found my ancestor's will there in the vault - BUT - I know that all the same info is on the films and they are not nearly as fragile as the original documents are. 1. Who were the DILLARD parents of Salina "Sally" Dillard who married John W. Hester?
    2. MICHAEL MARTINEZ
    3. All of these Harris, Petty, Dillards, etc are a completely new line of research for me. And boy, oh boy, am I getting all turned around because they appear to intermarried at many different levels. Not to mention all of that occurs across three counties that I've been able to find thus far ... Smith county, Stewart county, and Montgomery county. One of the closer Dillard connections that I'm hoping someone can help me untangle is who the parents of Salina "Sally" Dillard were. Here are the facts that I have. According to census records of 1860, 1870, and 1880 and her tombstone, her date of birth is 27 Mar 1838. She appears alternately as Sallie, Salina, and Amelia depending on which record you are looking at. Given that Salina is what was left on her tombstone I'm thinking that Sally was just a nickname and Amelia may have been a mistake by the census taker. On the 8 Jun 1857 she married John W. Hester in Montgomery County, TN. In October 1859 they had a son named Charles Hester. Sometime between 1859 and 27 Jul 1861, John W. Hester probably dies ... for all I know it could have been in one of the first battles of the US Civil War (I haven't researched it that far yet). On 27 Jul 1861 Mrs. Salina Hester nee Dillard marries John Calvin Thacker in Montgomery County, TN. John Thacker raises her son Charles as his own and he even occasionally shows up as Charles Thacker ... as he reaches adulthood though he reverts to using the name Charles Hester. According to her tombstone in Salina "Sally" Dillard Hester Thacker dies on 2 Feb 1900 in Montgomery County, TN. John dies 15 years later. I'm still researching Charles and his descendants, but they were still in Montgomery county in the 1910 census, but I haven't found them in the 1920 census yet. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Kathy in FL

    3. And to pile more evidence on top of this in the 1860 census for Stewart County, TN a young man with the last name of BAUGH is living with Turner and Minerva, along with a 14 year old John Thacker (brother of my ggg grandmother). Minerva is using the last name Harris by this time so I suspect that Turner had been gone for longer than the two years mentioned in the 1866 divorce proceedings brought by Sallie Harris in Smith County, TN.
